The award winning 63.72m/209'1" expedition yacht 'Scout' was built by Hakvoort in the Netherlands at their Monnickendam shipyard. Her interior is styled by English designer design house H2 Yacht Design and she was delivered to her owner in April 2019. This luxury vessel's exterior design is the work of H2 Yacht Design.

Scout has been designed to comfortably accommodate up to 12 guests in 6 suites comprising two VIP cabins. Additionally, there are 2 staff cabins aboard. She is also capable of carrying up to 18 crew onboard to ensure a relaxed luxury yacht experience.

Scout features at-anchor stabilizers providing exceptional comfort levels. Her water tanks store around 26,000 Litres of fresh water. She was built to Lloyds Register Ice-Class classification society rules, and is MCA Compliant.

$85M Luxury Superyacht Spotted Cruising Michigan Waters

Aside from the freighters, this may be the biggest vessel on the Great Lakes. The magnificent 209' international luxury yacht 'Scout' is in Michigan waters.

Billionaire James Berwind and his partner Kevin Clark began making sketches on a napkin of a ship designed to be a semi-permanent base from which they could explore the world. A few years and $85 million later, they set sail on their dream voyage. With a helicopter pad and a hot tub with a swim-up bar, this boat just might be nicer than your house.

The $85 million superyacht Scout was spotted June 28 on the St. Clair River heading into Lake Huron after passing under the Blue Water Bridge. As of July 1 it was anchored in Lake Huron off the east side of Mackinac Island .

The luxurious superyacht sleeps 10 guests in 5 cabins and has a crew of 17 to keep her sailing the world. Designed by London's H2 Yacht Design, a Dutch company called Hakvoort was commissioned to construct the international behemoth. With two Caterpillar engines, it can cruise at 15 knots just about anywhere in the world. (See more naval-type tech stats here .)

Of course, there are ample sundecks, areas for relaxation and spacious quarters for the guests. The "private owner’s apartment is accessed via a library studded with nautical-themed artifacts" and includes a "hidden bar area." Scout also has a helicopter pad, a jacuzzi with a swim-up bar and a greenhouse and dog park on board.

Scout Yacht 101: An Insider’s Guide

The Scout yacht was built by Hakvoort Shipyards in the Netherlands back in the year 2019. Both the interior and exterior design work was done by English design house H2 Yacht Design with naval architecture by Diana Yacht Design. Ownership of the yacht actually changed hands during the construction process in 2018. It started life as Project Zeus and then was changed to Project Brio when a new owner took over, before finally being christened Scout when it was finished. 

Who is the Scout Yacht Owner?

Scout is owned by James Berwind, philanthropist and heir to the Berwind Corporation. His net worth is estimated at around $500 million and, along with his partner Kevin Clark, he purchased the Scout for them and their rescue dogs. The name of the yacht is not one that sounds unusual at first, especially for an expedition yacht but it’s actually named after Berwind’s dog. One of the features of the yacht is actually a custom sculpture of Scout the dog.

Unlike some yacht owners, Berwin and Clark spend a lot of time on this yacht,essentially living on it as it suits their outdoor and travel-loving lifestyle. Berwind has said that the idea for the yacht came to him and Clark during a conversation about what they’d want and sketching it out on a napkin, well before they even spoke to a designer.

How Big is the Yacht Scout?

The Scout is an expedition yacht that clocks in at 209’1” in length. Not nearly the longest yacht in the world but definitely something that qualifies as a superyacht based on the length alone. In addition to the length, it’s got a beam of 36’9” and weighs in with a gross tonnage of 1,461 GT.

How Much Did the Scout Yacht Cost?

The Scout Yacht cost its owner a tidy sum of about $85 million back in 2019. It’s been reported that the annual running costs for the yacht are somewhere between $5 million and $8 million which is not unusual for a yacht of this size at all.

At this time the Scout is not available for charter. 

How Fast is the Scout Motor Yacht and What Engines Does it Use?

The Scout has a cruising speed of 12.5 knots and it has a top speed of 15.2 knots although some sources report this a little bit lower at around 14.8 knots. It has a range of 4,800 nautical miles which it can achieve thanks to a pair of Caterpillar diesel (3512C) 1,575hp engines running at 1800 rpm. The yacht has 159,000 liter fuel capacity as well.

What’s the Interior of the Scout Yacht Like?

Because Berwind and Clark use the yacht as a home more so than simply a luxury toy, the interior design of the Scout is very comfortable and inviting. You’ll notice in the photos that, even though it does have that look of luxury, there’s also something a little more like a penthouse apartment than a fancy hotel feel. Things like the plush master suite and the on board garden show that there’s an interest in making this yacht a home more than what you might see on other luxury yachts and especially on charter vessels which have to be a little more impersonal. 

None of that is to suggest the Scout doesn’t have a lot of those great luxury features that make superyachts so enticing. Quite the opposite, in fact. There’s a lot going on with this vessel. It has room on board for 10 guests across five separate cabins.

The Master suite is accessed through a personally curated library of books, antiques and nautical-themed features that have appealed to the owners. It’s roughly the size of a studio apartment in Manhattan and stretches the full beam of the ship. It features two full bathrooms, walk-in closets and frosted, full-length windows at port and starboard. There’s also a private terrace for taking in views of the sea. The terrace also serves as a place for the owner’s dogs to play and get some fresh air on board.

In addition to the master suit, there are two VIP suites for guests as well as 2 double staterooms. 

Berwind and Clark were hands-on during the entire design process of the yacht and ensured that there were some serious pop culture influences at play. Berwind has stated that the design aesthetic was influenced by Fritz Lang’s classic science fiction film Metropolis, the interiors of Jules Verne’s Nautilus submarine, every James Bond villain’s lair, and even Looney Tunes cartoons. You’ll probably never find another yacht with a similar pedigree.

Amenities and Features

• The owner has hand-picked artwork throughout the yacht including many pieces by New York artist William Steiger
• A custom-designed one of a kind greenhouse can be accessed from the puppy park and features a wide array of hanging and potted plants tended by Berwind himself.
• A custom, high-tech security system, details of which are obviously not available, was installed to keep the vessel safe as it travels to all parts of the world and could potentially face some dangerous situations.
• A guest elevator to help navigate between decks
• A helipad at the foredeck allows guests to come and go via helicopter even when the vessel is at sea
• The steel hull over aluminum superstructure is built to be ice class, meaning it’s stronger than a typical yacht and can handle travel in sub-zero temperatures. This also means the propeller and rudder are designed to be more robust and capable of navigating frigid Northern waters as well. 
• There is both an on deck pool and sauna for relaxing located on a massive sundeck
• Like many similar yachts, the Scout features a gym, fully equipped with the latest gear, for working out.
• A cinema room for movie watching
• Both formal and casual dining areas depending on mood and occasion 
• The yacht was designed with an eye towards running greener and more sustainably than some other yachts. To that end the engines have improve fuel efficiency and waste management systems are also highly advanced to cut down on the yacht’s overall footprint
• The upper deck features a large sunbed and then features a large area for parties, dining, or just lounging
• The ceiling of the main saloon is an LCD screen that mirrors the exterior view, making it seem as though you’re outside despite being in
• The Scout has a pair of 26 foot tenders that can be brought on board or lowered into the sea viz the on-board crane system

The Scout also houses a number of nautical toys but a full list of things such as jet skis and seabobs has not been made public to allow us to know the extent of the items on board.

The Bottom Line

The superyacht Scout was built by Hakvoort yachts and is owned by James Berwind. It was launched in 2019. An expedition yacht with a hull designed to handle even the coldest temperatures, Berwind spends a lot of time living on the yacht with his partner and rescue dogs. This includes a dog named Scout, who the yacht was named after.

At just over 209 feet it’s a large yacht, though far from the biggest, and it’s believed to have cost Berwind $85 million. It has a maximum speed of just over 15 knots. Because it’s used not just as a pleasure boat but as a home, it has many features that make it more unique than a typical yacht which includes a lot of custom facilities designed to handle dogs, such as a puppy garden on an observation deck. In addition, there are features such as a garden that grows hanging and potted plants year round.

Scout Boats’ Super Center-Console

Scout Boats’ latest flagship aims to impress in more ways than one. When describing the 67 LX Series , the South Carolina-based builder coined the phrase “Expect everything.” This five-outboard owner-operator center-console is capable of offshore angling adventures and entertaining guests from the stern to the bow (even belowdecks), and it has a reported eye-watering 52-knot speed. Scout also says the 67 is beachable. It will be offered in three versions: Sport (which will be the first version built), Sportfish and Cruise.

Forward and beneath the hardtop, there is a settee with a dinette across from additional seating for one or two. This space can be connected with the interior by lowering the window forward. Inside, there is a bar with three stools. The galley is to starboard and abaft two of four helm seats. It’s equipped with two refrigerator/freezer drawers, a two-burner cooktop, a microwave convection oven and a sink. Across from the galley is a U-shaped lounge with a dining table and a flip-down 40-inch TV.

Belowdecks, there are three staterooms and what Scout calls a “theater room.” This approximately 66-square-foot space has a settee to starboard that converts to an additional berth. Also in the theater room are a 32-to-43-inch TV, a beverage center, a refrigerator and an ottoman. Lighting can be controlled by overhead and hullside power blinds. To port is the day head, which can also be accessed via the portside VIP stateroom. A twin-berth guest stateroom is to starboard and aft. The forepeak master has an island queen berth.

Power for the Scout 67 LXS is five 600 hp Mercury Verado V-12 engines. Scout says cruising speed is approximately 40 knots, and range is 400 nautical miles.

Rigged-and-Ready Cockpit

The cockpit on Hull No. 1 of the semicustom 67 LXS will have two livewells, a built-in seat with stowage aft, and aft-facing seating forward. Owners can add stowage, an ice chest, a cooktop and a sink. Deployable side decks increase the 13-foot-3-inch beam to 19 feet, 5 inches.

Scout is a custom motor yacht launched in 2018 by Hakvoort Shipyard in Monnickendam, Netherlands.

Scout measures 63.72 metres in length, with a max draft of 3.25 feet and a beam of 11.60 feet. She has a deck material of teak.

Scout has an aluminium hull with a steel / aluminium superstructure.

H2 Yacht Design was established in 1994 specialising in the interior design and exterior styling of superyachts. The director Jonny Horsfield and senior consultants have between them over 30 years experience in the yacht industry during which time they have been involved in over 100 superyacht projects.

Scout Boats Expanding to Make Room for 67-Foot Luxury Yacht

Scout Boats has allocated $10 million USD to expand its Summerville, S.C facility in preparation of its incoming 670 LX sportfishing yacht.

The 670 LX was announced in January and marks a significant size increase for the iconic brand. The longstanding manufacturer has been undergoing a systematic increase in sizing -- first starting with the launch of the 425 LXF in 2021.

The positive response was quickly followed by two other large variations in 2022 -- the 377 LXF and the 400 LXF . The current flagship of the Scout line is the 530 LXF, which boasts an LOA of 53'5" with a 14'8" beam, although the 670 LX will soon take the title.

In a company statement , South Carolina governor Henry McMaster raved about the success of Scout and its commitment to the local economy, stating: “This announcement by Scout Boats is another win for Dorchester County. South Carolina’s boat manufacturing industry continues to thrive because of our world-class workforce. Congratulations to Scout Boats on its $10 million investment that will provide our people even more opportunities in Dorchester County.”

Scout Boats Chief Executive Officer Steve Potts added: “We meet with the craftsmen and women in each of our four plants every month for award ceremonies, and I often remind them that we ship our boats all over the world to some very affluent customers who choose our brand because of the pride they put into each and every build. Congratulations.”

Scout Boats plans to enlarge its existing 36-acre campus by expanding and renovating its existing headquarters on the property. The company will build also add a new 35,000-square-foot facility to support the building and housing of components for its yacht division and the new product line required for the 67 LX series.

Renovations and operations are expected to be online by summer 2024.

As for the new boat model, the 67 LX series will feature three versions-- the 670 LXF (Luxury Fish Model), the 670 LXS (Luxury Sport Model), and the 670 LXC (Luxury Cruiser Model).

All three will be powered with five Mercury V12 600 hp Verado outboards producing 3000 hp. Each will have a projected top speed of 60 mph (96 km/h), a 'fast cruise' of 40 mph (64 km/h), and a range of approximately 500 miles (800 km).

The new 670 series was done in collaboration with designer Harrison Eidsgaard , who has an extensive portfolio with well-known superyacht manufacturers including Lürssen, Feadship, and Heesen.

It remained tricky and demanding to fly even after the extensive improvements made over the MiG-1. Many fighter regiments had not kept pace in training pilots to handle the MiG and the rapid pace of deliveries resulted in many units having more MiGs than trained pilots during the German invasion. By 1 June 1941, 1,029 MIG-3s were on strength, but there were only 494 trained pilots. In contrast to the untrained pilots of the 31st Fighter Regiment, those of the 4th Fighter Regiment were able to claim three German high-altitude reconnaissance aircraft shot down before war broke out in June 1941. However high-altitude combat of this sort was to prove to be uncommon on the Eastern Front where most air-to-air engagements were at altitudes well below 5,000 metres (16,000 ft). At these altitudes the MiG-3 was outclassed by the Bf 109 in all respects, and even by other new Soviet fighters such as the Yakovlev Yak-1. Furthermore, the shortage of ground-attack aircraft in 1941 forced it into that role as well, for which it was totally unsuited. Pilot Alexander E. Shvarev recalled: "The Mig was perfect at altitudes of 4,000 m and above. But at lower altitudes it was, as they say, 'a cow'. That was the first weakness. The second was its armament: weapons failure dogged this aircraft. The third weakness was its gunsights, which were inaccurate: that's why we closed in as much as we could and fired point blank." On 22 June 1941, most MiG-3s and MiG-1s were in the border military districts of the Soviet Union. The Leningrad Military District had 164, 135 were in the Baltic Military District, 233 in the Western Special Military District, 190 in the Kiev Military District and 195 in the Odessa Military District for a total of 917 on hand, of which only 81 were non-operational. An additional 64 MiGs were assigned to Naval Aviation, 38 in the Air Force of the Baltic Fleet and 26 in the Air Force of the Black Sea Fleet. The 4th and 55th Fighter Regiments had most of the MiG-3s assigned to the Odessa Military District and their experiences on the first day of the war may be taken as typical. The 4th, an experienced unit, shot down a Romanian Bristol Blenheim reconnaissance bomber, confirmed by postwar research, and lost one aircraft which crashed into an obstacle on takeoff. The 55th was much less experienced with the MiG-3 and claimed three aircraft shot down, although recent research confirms only one German Henschel Hs 126 was 40% damaged, and suffered three pilots killed and nine aircraft lost. The most unusual case was the pair of MiG-3s dispatched from the 55th on a reconnaissance mission to PloieÅŸti that failed to properly calculate their fuel consumption and both were forced to land when they ran out of fuel. Most of the MiG-3s assigned to the interior military districts were transferred to the PVO where their lack of performance at low altitudes was not so important. On 10 July 299 were assigned to the PVO, the bulk of them belonging to the 6th PVO Corps at Moscow, while only 293 remained with the VVS, and 60 with the Naval Air Forces, a total of only 652 despite deliveries of several hundred aircraft. By 1 October, on the eve of the German offensive towards Moscow codenamed Operation Typhoon, only 257 were assigned to VVS units, 209 to the PVO, and 46 to the Navy, a total of only 512, a decrease of 140 fighters since 10 July, despite deliveries of over a thousand aircraft in the intervening period. By 5 December, the start of the Soviet counter-offensive that drove the Germans back from the gates of Moscow, the Navy had 33 MiGs on hand, the VVS 210, and the PVO 309. This was a total of 552, an increase of only 40 aircraft from 1 October. Over the winter of 1941-42 the Soviets transferred all of the remaining MiG-3s to the Navy and PVO so that on 1 May 1942 none were left on strength with the VVS. By 1 May 1942, Naval Aviation had 37 MiGs on strength, while the PVO had 323 on hand on 10 May. By 1 June 1944, the Navy had transferred all its aircraft to the PVO, which reported only 17 on its own strength, and all of those were gone by 1 January 1945. Undoubtedly more remained in training units and the like, but none were assigned to combat units by then.
