From the moment of initial contact with Captain Yiannis, everything was seamless.

Our experience has been nothing short of exceptional.

From the moment of initial contact with Captain Yiannis, everything was seamless. This company and the entire team could not have been more helpful! We live in the USA and never had a problem with communication. The Catamaran we selected was the Lagoon 450F. It was beautiful, spacious, clean, and easy to live on for a week as we sailed to beautiful beaches.

The Ionian Islands we visited were breathtaking, especially Kefalonia – it was our favorite! Above all, the feeling of safety that Captain George ensured throughout our trip made our journey even more memorable. We can’t wait to experience it again.

So, if you’re looking for an unforgettable sailing experience around the Greek Islands with a professional company and a knowledgeable and friendly guide, look no further!

A safe pair of hands, experience and unlimited knowledge.

We’ve just spent a week sailing the Greek islands with Captain Yiannis. If your looking for a safe pair of hands, experience and unlimited knowledge of the Greek islands then Yiannis is the captain you need.

Great knowledge of the area and its history.

Excellent week of sailing in the Greek Islands with Yiannis. He has great knowledge of the area and its history. He showed us unique beaches and key sites on the islands. A memorable week of adventure, drama, and weather. A great first visit to the country of Greece and its islands. Recommend Yiannis as a skipper and guide for your trip.

The kids enjoyed jumping off the boat and even steering.

We made it back safely and happily to Paros today. Yianni showed us secluded beaches, surprising chortas and agreed to take us to santorini even though he hates sailing there! The kids enjoyed jumping off the boat and even steering it on occasion. It’s a beautiful part of the world and we’d definitely recommend exploring it.

Yannis is a superb captain

First and foremost, Yannis is a superb captain. He is a true professional and puts the comfort and safety of the guests first. We had a superb week and thanks to the knowledge of Yannis we visited hidden beaches and places that were sublime. Yannis is passionate about sailing, and we all improved our sailing skills and learned about sailing this magical part of the world.

We cannot wait to return and know that Captain Yannis is our go-to Greek master of the seas.”

The best tavernas for dining and the most interesting places to visit.

My friends and I had a terrific sailing trip with Cpt. Yiannis. We sailed islands from Athens to Milos for a week. [...] Captain Yiannis was not only an outstanding skipper, but he also is a very knowledgeable tour guide. [...] Also, he had tremendous knowledge of any island we stopped on the way and recommended the best tavernas for dining and the most interesting places to visit.

The captain was very professional and sailed extremely safe and responsible. Great guy, a great captain, thank you, Captain Yiannis!

Yannis gave us the ideal family yacht

We had a wonderful week of sailing in the Saronic Gulf end of August. Yannis gave us the ideal family yacht for this bareboat charter trip . Together with the charter company we felt us in very good hands, for all questions we had. Except in this year 2020, with these special conditions!

Thanks Yiannis.

Yacht Charters in Greece with Istion

Greece is quite simply the perfect sailing destination in Europe. Blessed with a mild southern Mediterranean climate with an extended summer giving a comfortable sailing season of close to eight months, our small country has over 13,000 kilometres of coastline to explore . That impressive number comes from the over 6000 islands and islets scattered like diamonds in the sea, each of them inviting you to swim for hours, socialise while tasting Greece’s well know cuisine and enjoy the beauty of a Greek summer spent next to the waves. Greece is truly a sailor’s paradise .

At Istion Yachting, we have been providing unforgettable sailing holidays in Greece for more than 30 years. From our humble beginnings on the island of Kos in 1992 we now offer charters throughout Greece from our 11 main charter bases. Our experienced skippers and crews, charter base staff, planning departments and every one of the wider Istion team is an expert in their field and is ready to assist you in planning the perfect sailing holiday in Greece . We look forwarded to welcoming you this summer!

There are so many options, and only so much time. The diversity of the different sailing areas in Greece makes picking just one difficult, which is why so many of our guests come back to sail again and again . There is always another beautiful island to visit and another idyllic beach to swim on!

Peak sailing season is from late June through August with hot weather, warm seas and busy islands. Availability can become limited during this period so booking early is essential.

Late spring from May to June and late summer from September to early October are often considered the best time to sail for experienced sailors and repeat visitors to our country. The weather is great and the islands are more relaxed than the busy summer months.

For those who want to live the real Greek way of life, April and October can be rewarding, with less heat, fewer visitors and enticing low-season offers . A few of the restaurants and shops on some islands may not have opened or may have closed for the season, but in our opinion early and late season sailing in Greece is a magical and unique experience .

The Argo Saronic Gulf is actually two gulfs (the Saronic and Argolic ) that are often referred to together in sailing terms given their close distances to each other. The Saronic Gulf lies in between Athens and the coast of the Argolid Peninsula while the Argolic Gulf is one hop over in between the peninsula and the first large leg of the Eastern Peloponnese , which runs all the way south to Monemvasia.

We often recommend this area to first time sailors for a number of practical reasons. First and foremost, it is the easiest area to reach from Athens , which makes it an ideal spot for those arriving via the Athens International Airport. Within a few hours of touching down you can be swimming and relaxing on board having reached your first destination.

Another advantage is that the area is well protected from the annual Meltemi winds that can blow strongly in July and August and may create challenging conditions for less experienced sailors.

The Argo Saronic Gulf also has plenty of places to visit on either a one or two-week holiday. One-week holidays will usually take in the nearby islands of Aigina and Poros before looping down to the coastal town of Ermioni and the cosmopolitan islands of Spetses and Hydra further south. A visit to Epidavros for a quick trip to its famous ancient theatre is not to be missed for the history buffs.

Two week holidays allow you to explore further east, with the coastal towns of Nafpleio, Leonidio and Kyparissi offering relaxed mooring while cruising the coast of the Eastern Peloponnese.

We invite you to learn more about our Athens charter base , download our sample one-week Saronic Gulf sailing itinerary for inspiration and contact us with any questions, we are here to help you plan your perfect sailing holiday.

Ah, the Cyclades. A name steeped in history that brings the classic image of a Greek island to everyone’s mind. While Greece has many island chains and all of them are unique and magical, the Cyclades has become nearly synonymous with the county as a whole for many visitors.

Characterised by their white houses, rugged landscapes and world famous beaches , the Cyclades attract visitors from around the world and are a must see for everyone at some point in their life. For sailors the area offers a huge variety of routes and islands to visit, from the world famous islands Mykonos and Santorini to the popular Paros and Naxos and many, many more in between.

A note about the Meltemi winds that blow from the north in July and August. In the Cyclades these winds can make for challenging conditions and sailing the area during these times is best for experienced sailors. Don’t despair all you beginner sailors! If you want a helping hand our skippers are the best in Greece and will be happy to take care of the sailing and navigation so you can enjoy the islands worry free.

The Cyclades are reached from our main base in Alimos Marina on the western side of Attica giving quick access to the islands of Kea, Kithnos, Serifos, Sifnos and Milos among others.

Our base in Lavrion is perfect for getting a head start to the islands of Andros, Tinos, Mykonos, Paros and Naxos . The Lavrion base is further south and on the east side of Attica, saving a couple of hours of additional sailing time on your way out. As an added bonus, Lavrion is just half an hour from the Athens International Airport so you can be on your way towards your destination just an hour or two after landing.

Located on the western side of Greece the seven main islands of the Ionian Sea have their own unique charm and character . The Ionian Islands are much greener than most islands in Greece, their location and geography bringing more rainfall during the winter months and allowing trees and shrubs to grow and thrive. The combining of colours between the green of the hills , the white of the sands and the blue of the sea are a special treat for visitors to this area.

Istion maintains three bases in the Ionian, on Corfu in the north and in Lefkas (or Lefkada) and nearby Preveza further south.

Itineraries starting from Corfu may include multiple stops along the Corfu coast, visits to the islands of Paxos and Antipaxos and visits to mainland ports including Parga and Syvota .

Trips starting from Lefkas or Preveza may head either north towards Corfu or South towards the islands of Kalamos and Kastos and then on to the mythical island of Ithaca and nearby Kefalonia . Note that our base in Preveza is just 10 minutes from the Aktion Airport where all charter flights to Lefkas arrive. If your flight times are tight, Preveza is a great option .

We recommend downloading our sample sailing itineraries for trips leaving from Corfu and from Lefkas or Preveza . If you need more recommendations for a truly unique voyage through to the Ionian just contact us , we will be happy to help.

The Dodecanese islands in the southeast Aegean are close to our heart. The central island of Kos is where Istion Yachting first started operations in 1992 .

The Dodecanese are known for their wonderful beaches and rich history ranging from the ancient to the medieval to the modern in a delightful kaleidoscope of sights and sounds . The area has relatively mild wind conditions that are perfect for sailing throughout the year and has plenty of sun and warmth during the summer months.

Istion now has two bases in the Dodecanese, our home base on Kos and another on the historic island of Rhodes . From Kos you may head north towards the islands of Kalimos, Leros and Patmos and if time permits all the way to amazing Ithaki and Fourni .

Heading south from Kos will put you on course to visit the islands north of Rhodes including Nisiros, Tilos and Symi . Setting sail from Rhodes itself also reaches these islands or you can choose to head west, exploring the coast of Rhodes and visiting the quaint island of Chalki and the beautiful islands of Karpathos and Kasos .

Charter flights from most European countries fly direct to both Kos and Rhodes making them a great starting point for your next Aegean adventure !

The Sporades are the hidden gem on the Greek sailing map . Nestled off the eastern coast of central Greece the main islands of Skiathos, Skopelos, Alonissos and Skyros are a beautiful combination of green mountains, sandy and pebble beaches and deep blue seas. Nature plays a staring role here, with the National Marine Park at Alonissos being a significant refuge for the Monachus Monachus or Mediterranean seal .

Sailing conditions in the Sporades are relatively mild, although winds can shift between the day and night requiring some care when mooring. Distances between islands are short allowing a lot of fun to be packed into a week long charter .

We have two charter bases servicing the Sporades, a base on the island of Skiathos where most European charter flights arrive and another on the mainland city of Volos . Volos is a convenient starting spot for guests arriving by road with their own vehicle and allows exploring of the lovely coastline of the Pagasetic Gulf and Pelion on your way out to the islands – highly recommended !

Bareboat Charters

Tailored for the seasoned sailor, bareboat charters hand the helm over to you, allowing complete freedom to navigate the Greek seas at your own pace . Your sailing party must have at least one licensed skipper and one experienced crew member at a minimum to be able to rent our yachts as bareboats.

If you have some sailing experience but do not hold a valid license then a bareboat charter is not (yet) for you and your best option is a skippered charter where our friendly captains will give you a helping hand. If you are an experienced sailor and have no concerns about the challenges of wind conditions, navigation and docking then we invite you to read more about our bareboat charters here and contact us with any questions you may have.

Skippered Charters

Our skippered charters are the perfect blend of guidance and freedom, designed for those who have some sailing experience, are eager to learn or just want to relax and let a professional do the hard work . With an Istion skipper at your side, you can enjoy the peace of mind that comes with their expert navigation and docking skills while still playing an active role in your sailing adventure.

It's an educational and exhilarating experience where you can hone your sailing skills, participate in manoeuvring the yacht, and even take the helm under the watchful eye of your skipper. It is an amazing experience for everyone and kids in particular have a great time learning about sailing and playing little captain for a week.

Our skippered charters always start off with a briefing between you and your skipper so you can learn about the area you are going to sail and the islands you may want to visit. Our skippers know the Greek seas inside out and based on your preferences they will suggest recommended itineraries to follow, which islands to visit and what hidden beaches to swim at.

If you are planning your first sailing holiday in Greece , you are in the very best hands with Istion's professional skippers by your side. Read more about our skippered charters here , or just get in touch to start planning your perfect sailing holiday in Greece.

Fully Crewed Charters

For those of you that want to indulge in the epitome of maritime luxury, our crewed charters promise a carefree and opulent experience in Greece. This option is perfect for those who wish to sit back, relax, and soak in the Mediterranean sun while every detail is taken care of by our professional crew. From expert navigation to gourmet meals, and from personalized itineraries to attentive service, every aspect of your voyage is meticulously curated to ensure unparalleled comfort and elegance .

Crewed charters are available on a range of our top end sailing yachts and catamarans , and for those that want the thrum of an engine beneath their feet and to make a grand entrance wherever they go our exclusive motor yachts are waiting for you to step aboard. A crewed charter with Istion isn't just a holiday; it's an all-inclusive experience where you are the honoured guest and the Greek Isles your exclusive playground . Discover more about our fully crewed dream vacations here .

Sailing Yachts

Sailing yachts are perfect for those who love the classic feeling of sailing. Designed to be easy to handle, they smoothly glide through the water and let you enjoy the natural beauty of the Greek seas. They're a bit slower than other boats, and they lean to one side when the wind blows, which is all part of the classic sailing adventure. Their charming appearance and comfortable ride make them ideal for those who want to experience traditional sailing in a relaxed and eco-friendly way.

Sailing yachts are also the most budget friendly option for a sailing holiday in Greece. Our smaller yachts with three cabins and space for up to six guests (or eight if two sleep in the main cabin) can be rented for as little as roughly 1200 Euros a week in the low season. Costs for larger yachts with up to 6 cabins and space for up to 12 guests rise to approximately 10.000 Euros a week in the high season.

At Istion, we proudly offer a wide selection of the latest models as well as impeccably maintained older sailing yachts from Jeanneau, Beneteau, Bavaria, Sun Odyssey, Hanse and other top shipyards. Whether you're planning a cozy trip for a small group or a grand sailing adventure for a larger party, we have the right yacht to suit your needs.

Catamarans are the choice for those who want lots of space and a stable, comfortable trip. With their two-hull design, they don't rock as much as sailing yachts, which is great if you're new to sailing or easily feel seasick. You can also get closer to the beach with a catamaran, as they don't sit very deep in the water. Catamarans offer a smooth and spacious experience, making for a relaxing and comfortable sailing holiday and are a very popular choice for first time sailors in Greece.

For families and larger groups, the bigger cabins and more room to move around on a catamaran make them a good fit for your holiday. The double hull layout means two families can easily sail together while each having their own 'private space' on either side of the main deck. Catamarans also tend to have one washroom per cabin, a feature all parents with teenage kids appreciate.

The comfort and space offered in a catamaran puts them in a higher budget bracket than our monohull sailing yachts. Our smallest catamarans with four cabins and room for up to 10 guests start at roughly 2100 Euros per week in low season. Our top of the line models can range up to 16.000 Euros plus in the middle of the high season.

We are proud to have one of the largest fleets of catamarans in Greece with brand new models from Lagoon, Bali and Fountaine Pajot among others. We invite you to browse all our catamarans and contact us for any guidance you need to help make your sailing adventure in Greece perfect in every way.

Motor Yachts

Motor yachts are all about luxury and speed. They have multiple levels with lots of space, including big bedrooms and expansive living areas. These boats move quickly, powered by strong engines, so they're great if you want to explore a lot of places fast and make an impressive entrance wherever you go.

Our motor yachts are all modern, with plush interiors and all the latest features for entertainment and entertaining. However, they do use more fuel and require a professional captain and crew, so there's a higher cost for this kind of luxury and speed. If you're looking for a high-end and fast-paced trip with all the modern comforts, motor yachts are the way to go .

Complete Guide to Sailing the Greek Islands

  • Prepare for the journey

Visit the Cyclades Islands

Explore the saronic islands, navigate the ionian islands, discover the dodecanese islands, experience the northeast aegean islands, travel to the sporades islands, sail around the crete island, how to handle the boat, what to carry along.

Imagine feeling the warm Mediterranean sun on your skin, the cool breeze tugging at your hair, and the gentle lapping of waves against the hull of your boat. This is what awaits you when sailing in the Greek Islands. With a rich history, stunning landscapes, and tranquil blue waters, Greece offers a unique sailing experience for both beginners and seasoned sailors. This blog will serve as your compass, guiding you through everything you need to know about sailing in the Greek Islands.

Prepare for the Journey

Before you set sail on the adventure of a lifetime, you need to prepare. Good preparation can be the difference between an enjoyable trip and a stressful one. Here are some things you should consider:

  • Weather: Greece has a Mediterranean climate. This means warm, dry summers and mild, wet winters. The sailing season usually starts in April and ends in October. However, the best time for sailing in the Greek islands is considered to be from May to September when the weather is most favorable.
  • Sailing Skills: Confidence in your ability to handle a boat is important. If you're a newbie, consider taking a few sailing lessons before your trip. This will help you understand the basics of sailing and navigation. You don't need to be an expert, but knowing the ropes will definitely enhance your sailing experience.
  • Route Planning: The Greek Islands are divided into several groups - the Cyclades, the Saronic, the Ionian, the Dodecanese, the Northeast Aegean, the Sporades, and Crete. Each group has its own charm and attractions. Plan your route based on what you want to see and do. Remember, the journey is just as important as the destination!
  • Boat Selection: The type of boat you choose will depend on your budget, the size of your crew, and your sailing skills. Options range from small sailing yachts perfect for couples or small groups, to larger catamarans or motor yachts ideal for larger parties. Make sure to choose a boat that fits your comfort and needs.

Preparing for your sailing trip to the Greek Islands may seem like a lot of work, but trust me, it's worth it. Once you're out there on the sparkling blue waters, with the wind in your sails and the sun on your face, you'll be glad you took the time to prepare.

Let's start our sailing journey in the Greek Islands with the Cyclades. This group of islands is the most popular among sailors—and for good reason. With their white-washed houses, blue-domed churches, and windmills, the Cyclades are the picture of idyllic Greek beauty.

  • Mykonos: Known for its vibrant nightlife and beautiful beaches, Mykonos is a must-visit when sailing in the Greek Islands. By day, explore the narrow, winding streets of Mykonos town. By night, enjoy the lively beach bars and clubs that make this island famous.
  • Santorini: No trip to the Cyclades would be complete without a stop at Santorini. With its stunning sunsets, unique architecture, and world-class wineries, Santorini is a truly unforgettable destination.
  • Paros: This island is a sailor's dream, offering safe harbors and plenty of anchorages. Paros is also known for its gorgeous sandy beaches and charming villages.

If you're looking for a blend of cultural experiences, beautiful landscapes, and a taste of the high life, the Cyclades Islands are just the ticket. Each island has its own story to tell, making your journey of sailing in the Greek islands a truly unique experience.

Next on our sailing adventure around the Greek islands, we arrive at the Saronic islands. These islands are a stone's throw from Athens, making them an easy and convenient option for sailors. But don't let their proximity fool you, these islands boast stunning natural beauty and rich history.

  • Aegina: Aegina is famous for the Temple of Aphaia, a well-preserved ancient Greek sanctuary. This island also offers bustling markets, a lively port, and delicious pistachios — they're a must-try when you visit!
  • Hydra: One of the most unique features of Hydra is the absence of cars. Donkeys are the main mode of transportation here, adding to the island's charm. Hydra is also home to an engaging maritime museum and stunning mansions that date back to the 18th century.
  • Poros: Poros is a small island, but it packs a punch with its lush pine forests and beautiful sandy beaches. A visit to the Historical and Folklore Museum will give you a glimpse into the island's past.

With their rich cultural heritage and stunning landscapes, the Saronic Islands are an excellent choice when sailing in the Greek islands. They offer a perfect blend of relaxation and exploration for an unforgettable sailing experience.

The next stop on our Greek sailing adventure is the Ionian Islands. Known for their breathtaking beaches, lush vegetation, and unique architectural style, these islands will surely leave you in awe. So, let's dive into what each island has to offer:

  • Corfu: Corfu is a melting pot of cultural influences, with Venetian, French, and British elements visible in its architecture. Make sure to visit the Old Fortress and stroll around the charming Old Town.
  • Kefalonia: Famous for its stunning beaches and turquoise waters, Kefalonia is a paradise for nature lovers. Don't miss the mesmerizing Melissani Cave and the majestic Mount Ainos.
  • Zakynthos: Home to the iconic Shipwreck Beach, Zakynthos is a must-visit. While here, take a chance to explore the beautiful Blue Caves and the endangered sea turtle nesting site at Gerakas Beach.

When sailing in the Greek islands, the Ionian Islands are certainly a destination to mark on your map. Their unique charm, combined with their natural beauty, makes for a memorable part of your Greek island sailing journey.

As we continue sailing in the Greek islands, we journey east to the Dodecanese Islands. This group of 12 larger plus 150 smaller islands is steeped in history and natural beauty, with each island offering its own unique experience.

  • Rhodes: Rhodes, the largest of the Dodecanese Islands, is known for its beach resorts, ancient ruins, and remnants of its Crusader past. Highlights include the Medieval City of Rhodes, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and the ancient city of Kamiros.
  • Kos: With long sandy beaches and a vibrant nightlife, Kos is a popular spot for tourists. But it's not just about the beaches. You'll find ancient Greek and Roman landmarks, including the Asklepieion, one of the most significant archaeological sites in Greece.
  • Patmos: Known as the 'Jerusalem of the Aegean', Patmos is a place of pilgrimage due to its connection to Saint John the Divine. The Monastery of Saint John the Theologian and the Cave of the Apocalypse are must-visits.

From historical sites to stunning coastlines, the Dodecanese Islands add a unique flavor to your journey while sailing in the Greek islands. Don't forget to try out the local cuisine, as each island has its own delicious specialties!

Now, let's set the sails a bit more north and explore the Northeast Aegean Islands. They might be less famous than their southern siblings, but trust me, they are just as stunning and offer a more relaxing, authentic Greek experience.

  • Lesbos: Lesbos, also known as Mytilene, is famous for its olive oil, ouzo, and beautiful petrified forest. Don't miss the picturesque villages of Molyvos and Plomari, and try the local sardines - they're a delicacy here.
  • Chios: Famous for its mastic trees and medieval villages, Chios is truly unique. Pay a visit to the Mastic Museum and the village of Pyrgi, known for its black and white geometrical patterns on houses.
  • Samos: Samos is the birthplace of the famous mathematician Pythagoras. But that's not all - its white sandy beaches, lush green mountains, and sweet Muscat wine will make you fall in love with this island.

These islands are a bit off the beaten track, making them perfect for those who want to experience the real Greece while sailing in the Greek islands. With their rich history, unique local products, and stunning landscapes, the Northeast Aegean Islands are well worth a visit.

Next on our Greek sailing adventure, let's catch the wind to the Sporades Islands. Known for their stunning natural beauty and crystal clear waters, these islands will leave you speechless.

  • Skiathos: Skiathos may be small in size, but it's big in charm. With over 60 beaches to explore, you'll never run out of stunning spots to anchor your boat. And don't forget to visit the old town with its traditional houses and narrow streets.
  • Skopelos: Remember the movie "Mamma Mia"? It was filmed right here on Skopelos. Aside from its Hollywood fame, Skopelos is known for its lush greenery, beautiful churches, and delicious local cheese.
  • Alonnisos: If you're a nature lover, Alonnisos will be your paradise. Home to the National Marine Park of Alonnisos, this island is a haven for rare seabirds, dolphins, and the endangered Mediterranean monk seal.

A trip to the Sporades Islands will add a dose of nature, beauty, and tranquility to your journey sailing in the Greek islands. The blend of turquoise waters, green landscapes, and charming villages is something you won't easily forget.

Now, let's set sail for the largest of the Greek islands — Crete. Known for its diverse landscapes and rich history, Crete is a must-visit when sailing in the Greek islands. It's like a country within a country, offering everything from snow-capped mountains to sun-kissed beaches.

  • Heraklion: Start your journey in the vibrant city of Heraklion. Pay a visit to the ancient Palace of Knossos, considered Europe's oldest city, and the Heraklion Archaeological Museum, housing treasures from Crete's long history.
  • Chania: Sail west to Chania, a city where the past and present coexist. Walk along the old Venetian harbor, take in the charming old town, and try some of the island's best seafood.
  • Elafonisi: A little further west, you'll find the exotic beach of Elafonisi, known for its pink sand. Yes, pink! It's an ideal spot to anchor your boat and spend a leisurely day soaking up the sun.

Crete is a treasure chest of experiences waiting to be opened. It's not just about the destination, but the journey of sailing around it that makes it one of the most rewarding parts of sailing in the Greek islands.

Now that we've talked about where to go, let's discuss something equally important: how to handle the boat. Don't worry if you're not a seasoned sailor — with some basic knowledge and practice, you'll soon feel confident steering your own vessel while sailing in the Greek islands.

  • Get to know your boat: Familiarize yourself with the parts of the boat and their functions. Understand what the rudder, sail, and hull do. Remember, knowing your boat is the first step to controlling it.
  • Master the basics: Learn how to steer, adjust the sails, and anchor. These are basic skills that every sailor should know. Practice makes perfect, so don't rush.
  • Understand the wind: The wind is your friend when you're sailing. Learn how to read its direction and adjust your sails accordingly. Remember, you can't control the wind, but you can adjust your sails.
  • Stay safe: Safety should be your top priority. Always wear a life jacket, keep a close eye on the weather, and have a plan in case of emergencies.

Handling a boat can seem daunting at first, but with time and practice, you'll be sailing like a pro. It's all part of the adventure of sailing in the Greek islands. So, are you ready to take the helm?

When you're getting ready for your sailing trip in the Greek islands, packing can be a bit of a puzzle. But don't worry, we've got you covered. Here's a simple list of things you should definitely have with you:

  • Sunscreen: The Greek sun can be intense, especially in the summer. So, a good sunscreen is a must-have to protect your skin.
  • Comfortable clothes: Pack light, breathable clothes. Don't forget your swimsuit, a hat, and a light jacket for cooler nights.
  • Waterproof bag: A waterproof bag is handy for keeping your belongings dry, especially when you're on the boat.
  • Snacks and water: You'll need plenty of water to stay hydrated. Also, pack some snacks for when hunger strikes in between island stops.
  • First aid kit: It's always a good idea to have a basic first aid kit on board. It should include band-aids, antiseptic wipes, and motion sickness tablets.
  • Camera: You'll definitely want to capture the breathtaking views and memorable moments. So don't forget your camera!

Packing right can make a big difference in your sailing experience. So, take your time, check your list, and get ready to set sail. Remember, the Greek islands are waiting for you!

Price list 2023 – rates per sailboat

In order to obtain the costs of chartering a boat per person all you need to do is divide the rates below at the number of persons in your group. For example, if you are a group of 6 persons sailing for 7 days in June- the 4600 euro per boat is the equivalent of 911 euro per persons for a full week on board. On balance that’s only 109 euro per day per person for you to enjoy your private boat. Please check our price list page for a full list of prices and special offers.

10% discount on the charter rate for a party of 2 guests

Included in the charter rate (a), skipper and boat expenses, b) "all costs included" combo - 330 euro / day / boat. includes:, read more details, are you worried about the cost to rent a boat in greece well, we made this a worry-free sailing holiday in the greek islands..

After surfing the web and looking at different options for your sailing vacation, you might have noticed most yacht rental are structured similarly with renting a car. The charter rate covers the price for hiring the yacht itself (just like the car rental price covers the car itself).

And all the other aspects/costs involved are on you to cover as you go. For a car that would be things like gas, toll rates. With similar structure, when you are budgeting for your sailing holidays, you will have add on top of the charter rate, the other expenses involved as they appear. The trouble with this approach is that for a yacht the total/ final price the extras add up to varies several factors. Which makes it difficult for the traveler to figure out the total price he will end up paying (an aspect that will naturally might make him worried or anxious).

For example while the rate applied for skipper services is pretty much standard for all companies (190-240 euro/day), all the others extra can range according to many factors. How much fuel you are going to use depends on how long the engine will be running – more specifically on the distance to your favorite destination and weather condition. “But won’t we be sailing most of the time-why are we discussing fuel?’ you might be wondering. Please read below the paragraph marked with **

“All cost included” combo

So we are taking a different approach. In order to avoid the hassle of having an expense account open , we have grouped everything in the : “All costs included” combo of 330 euro/day to include the expenses associated with chartering the sailing yacht (skipper, fuel, final cleaning, etc) that will guarantee worry free vacations. You won’t have to keep an expense account open. You simply pay a one-time flat rate – divided in between the members in your group prior to setting sail, and that’s it! Much easier to plan and budget for! No hidden costs, no surprise at the end of the trip.

** How much will we be sailing /motoring? Well…it all depends on the wind conditions and the distance to the next destination. So let’s take for example a sail from Mykonos to the port of Paroikia in Paros that is 28 nautical miles apart (a good average).

  • In favorable weather conditions a sailboat is perfectly capable of reaching a destination powered only by sails. With a good wind speed (10-12 knots or more) a sailboat would be a moving with a regular speed around 7 miles/hour. Thus, assuming a proper breeze, you would be covering the 28 nautical miles distance in about 4 hours.
  • But when winds are very mild or from an un-proper direction, the speed a sailboat can reach just on sail power can drop significantly – even as low as 2-3 miles/hour. As a result, if you try to save fuel and move just on sails, you would be covering the same distance in 9-10 hours (no time left for swimming or exploring the island you are heading to). This is when the engine is one’s best friend! Is helping to go up to the regular speed of 7 knots so you reach the destination you wish, the day you wish in a reasonable time. This is an especially important aspect for many of our guests as soon as they realize a regular day on board is divided in several parts (the 3-5 hours travel time to the next destination, the 1-3 hours stop for a swim, the late afternoon/evening for exploring the islands you reach, on-shore activities, exploring the villages and dinner).
  • With a 4 hours travel there’s time to mix all these in a single day.

ROUND TRIPS

Our base is in Paros island and this is where embarkation / disembarkation typically takes place.

Paros has multiple connections daily to the islands in the Cyclades ( including Mykonos and Santorini) as well as many daily flights and ferries connecting it to Athens.

ONE WAY TRIPS

Upon previous arrangements a pick-up or drop-off at a different island in the Cyclades ( Santorini, Milos, Naxos, Sifnos, etc) might be arranged

Click here to show / hide more details

A one-way fee applies in order to cover the cost of the sailboat traveling empty from the base/regular embarkation point (at Paros) to the pick up point of your choice. The one way fee covers the costs as skipper, fuel and  the charter rate for the day/s when it cannot be chartered as it will be traveling to the island you might to embark at). The Best Places to Learn How to Sail, From the Greek Islands to the Florida Keys

By Hannah Towey

Sailing is one of the best ways to explore some of the most beautiful, untouched coastal destinations around the globe. But from the outside, learning how to sail might seem like an intimidating—and expensive—pursuit.

However, learning to sail isn’t as difficult as it might seem. And contrary to what some may believe, “sailing is for everyone,” Zeke Quezada, the Director of Communications at the American Sailing Association (ASA) tells Condé Nast Traveler.

“It is important to understand that anyone can sail, and it is really easy to learn,” Quezada says. “Sailing is not just for the affluent; head into a community sailing club at your local marina, and you'll have options to get out on the water for little to no cost.”

While mastering the art of sailing takes consistent practice, hopeful captains looking for a crash-course to jumpstart their journey may consider a sailing vacation . These educational charters allow you to fully immerse yourself in the nautical lifestyle —and you can earn official certifications along the way. On these types of trips, “you have a qualified skipper on board who is offering instruction, as well as advice on how to become a safe and confident sailor,” Quezada explains. “The best part is that you can have your family onboard, and everyone is having a vacation while you check off the bucket list item of learning to sail.”

When planning your first sailing trip , look for trips and schools that offer credentialed schools and instructors; organizations such as ASA, US Sailing, and the Royal Yacht Association are internationally recognized. By following these certification tracks, you can become licensed to sail a charter without a captain on board, also known as a “bareboat charter.” Though not required in some places, a bareboat certification makes it much easier (and safer) to rent your own boat .

No matter which route you take, sailing is a lifelong skill that will open doors to a community of people passionate about getting out on the water and protecting the oceans. “Most importantly, you will learn how to sit back, turn off the phone, and feel the wind in your hair and the sun on your face,” says Quezada. “You might start listening to Jimmy Buffet as well.”

Below, we’ve rounded up the best places around the world for learning how to sail—including destinations in North America , Europe , Asia , and Australia —plus, the sailing courses and trips to book in 2024.

The Virgin Islands

The British Virgin Islands and US Virgin Islands are some of the best training grounds for novice sailors “because of their line-of-sight sailing, predictable wind, and sailor-friendly destinations,” Quezada says. “In the BVI, you can learn to sail and have a beach vacation simultaneously.”

If you’re looking to get your bareboat license, there are several ASA-certified sailing schools in the BVI and US Virgin Islands. Offshore Sailing School , one of the world's preeminent sailing institutions, offers fast track courses for all levels of sailing. Alternatively, charter a captained catamaran, one of the most popular ways to explore the Caribbean.

Florida Keys

Warm temperatures, calm turquoise waters, and consistent easterly winds make the Florida Keys one of the best places to learn to sail in the US. Stay at the Key Lime Sailing Club and cottages resort on Buttonwood Sound in Key Largo and take lessons at the American Sailing Academy , located onsite.

Alternatively, outdoor education organization Outward Bound, which offers program scholarships, is hosting a Florida Keys sailing excursion for adults in March/April 2025. Participants will live on a 30-foot open sailboat for slightly over a week learning beginner, intermediate, and advanced skills in chart and compass navigation, small boat seamanship, weather observation, and anchoring.

Greek Islands

With its calm, clear waters and warm Mediterranean climate, the Ionian sea offers ideal conditions for beginner sailors. Quezada recommends sailing down the western coast of Greece and the island of Corfu, where Fairwinds Sailing School offers “learn to sail” vacations from April to October. For a route closer to Athens, join a flotilla and hop between the Argo-Saronic Islands in the Aegean Sea, but be aware that the Meltemi winds, which are especially strong during July and August, can make for trickier sailing conditions in this region.

Sea of Cortez, Mexico

Sail through crystal clear waters between a whopping 971 uninhabited islands in the Sea of Cortez, located between the Baja peninsula and mainland Mexico. Nautilus Sailing offers liveaboard courses on catamaran and monohull ships for sailors looking to earn their ASA 101, 103, 104, and 114 certifications from January–June and October–December. The curriculum covers sailboat terminology, engine operation, docking procedures, sail trimming, navigation rules, anchoring, weather, and maritime safety, among other skills. Plus, expect to encounter some stunning marine life, including sea turtles, whale sharks, dolphins, and humpback whales.

Beginner sailors will appreciate the gentle winds of Dubrovnik, the Split Islands, and Kornati National Park , whose sheltered coves and bays supply calm and predictable winds.
