In a profession that is ever changing and always challenging, Eric Ripert is an inspiration. He's been the chef, and co-owner, of New York's legendary Le Bernardin for more than 30 years. He is a mentor to many, and someone who so many chefs look up to.

Today, I'm here in New York with him at his Michelin three-star temple to fish and seafood, talking about us living in different cities, while cooking the food of different countries. But you know what? We're a lot alike: Two chefs with much to share.

Where To Go For An Apology Meal image

Where To Go For An Apology Meal

Are These London Restaurants Worth The Hype? image

Are These London Restaurants Worth The Hype?

If you talk about game changing Italian food and drink in London then you should really be talking about three things: 3am espressos at Bar Italia, garlic butter dough balls at Pizza Express, and the River Café.

This is, literally, the mother of Italian restaurants in London. Before the River Café plopped itself down in Hammersmith in 1987, the UK thought antipasti was a movement against pastries, and that anything rocket related was NASA’s business. The River Café changed that by serving the kind of Italian food we take for granted these days. Fresh tagliatelle. Radicchio salads. Pomodoro sauce. You name it, they probably did it here first. But the most important thing of all? They’re still doing it very well.

Restaurants with this kind of reputation often have the same associations: high price, formal atmosphere, and staff who appear to have been born with the sole purpose of keeping you overly hydrated. The River Café is only the first of these. What’s another mortgage anyway? This isn’t one of those restaurants that makes you feel like you’ve arrived for a job interview as soon as you enter. It’s big, bright, and, most importantly, buzzing. This is a restaurant full of people who are happily eating £23 plates of mozzarella. Firstly because it tastes good, and secondly because the canteen-ish atmosphere makes it feel like a reunion with friends you’ve never met. It’s a place to spend proper time and proper money in.

Rémy Martin

There’s something timeless feeling about this restaurant. When are people not going to want to eat veal taglierini and bit of lip-smacking lemon tart? Or a crispy taleggio and potato pizzetta, followed by a chargrilled bit of lamb with borlotti beans? Especially with the Thames on their left, and that bloke off that series to their right. It’s neither cool nor uncool. It exists partially hidden (on the riverside) and in its own price bracket (up in the sky), both of which have allowed it carry on doing what it’s always done.

But it’s the way in which things are done at the River Cafe that stands out most of all. Yes the food here is priced high, and not everything is great. You might find yourself looking at a middling plate of monkfish and seeing an unpaid £40 phone bill. But god is this place classy. Sizeable charitable donation from ‘Anonymous’ classy. There’s no pushing here. No judgement. Mention to your server that you’ll be sharing a £40 secondi, and your wood pigeon will wordlessly arrive on two separate plates. This food isn’t advertised for sharing, but of course it can be. Which is ironic considering a lot of London’s ‘sharing plates’ restaurants seem to be the opposite. What we’re saying is, actually, you can come here and share a pizzetta, have a pasta each, then split a whole Dover sole - all for around £50 quid a head. We’ve done it and felt comfortable, in every sense of the word.

Ultimately, The River Cafe is what lots of people look for in a special occasion restaurant. Somewhere with both reputation, food, and atmosphere to match. Plus that gut-wrenching feeling when the bill arrives. That combination may not be game changing, but it’s a lot harder to find than you think.

Food Rundown

The River Café image

Pizzetta With Taleggio, Rosemary And Potato

A pizzetta is like a mini pizza but not of the mini-pizzas-after-a-laser-quest-birthday-party-variety. This one is cheesy with some crispy bits of potato. It is delicious.

The River Café image

Culatello Di Zibello With Radicchio, Walnuts, Balsamic

Yes, this is a plate of ham, leaves, and nuts. It’s a squirrel’s feast. But it’s the tastiest squirrel’s feast we’ve ever had.

Panzotti Di Zucca

Things bathing in butter and cheese tend to make our heart beat a lot faster, but we won’t bring our personal lives into this. All you need to know is that this pumpkin-filled pasta is a very good order.

Veal Taglierini

Taglierini is a type of ribbon pasta. What do you do with ribbons? You tie them. Are we saying we want to be tied up in this pasta? Yes.

Risotto Ai Frutti Di Mare

Langoustines, red mullet, scallops, crab, and a bit of champagne for good measure. It tastes like being on a yacht. It is yacht life. N.B. We have never been on a yacht.

The River Café image

Whole Pigeon, Pancetta, Liver Crostino, Roast Potatoes

Small bird, big price. Don’t be put off by paying £40 for this though. As, firstly, you can always split it, and, secondly, it tastes fantastic.

Whole Dover Sole With Capers And Artichokes

Dover sole is a classic and this one is cooked perfectly. Even better is that it’s a relative bargain at £40, especially when you can easily share it between two or three of you.

The River Café image

Leg Of Lamb, Horseradish, Trevise Hearts, Borlotti Beans

A lot of this plate is a bit charred and caramelised, and it’s generally quite lovely.

The River Café image

You know that tk-tk-tk noise you make with your tongue against the top of your mouth? That’s what this tart makes you do, in a very good way.

The River Café image

Chocolate Nemesis

This is a River Cafe classic. It’s a cake that turns into a mousse as you eat it, and it’s rich and delicious.

Anna Tobias, who worked at the River Cafe from 2010 to 2013, at her London restaurant, Cafe Deco.

The River Cafe legacy: the enduring influence of one of Britain’s best loved restaurants

The Italian restaurant, which opened 35 years ago, counts Jamie Oliver and Hugh Fearnley-Whittingstall among its alumni. We speak to three of its chefs who have taken its ethos with them into their own places

“W hen we hire people,” says Joe Trivelli, executive head chef at the River Cafe, “I’m thinking, ‘Will they be good, and stay for a long time?’ I’m not thinking about what they’re going to do afterwards.” The restaurant, which celebrates its 35th anniversary next month, is not, stresses its other executive head chef, Sian Wyn Owen, a “fancy cooking school”.

The River Cafe’s kitchen needs team players willing to work hard while absorbing knowledge, not chefs in a rush to tick a box on their CV and move on to their own head chef roles. “Often that desire to be important overpowers the desire to learn,” says Wyn Owen.

Famous for its rigorously seasonal Italian cooking, the restaurant is also renowned as an incubator of highly influential talent. Its founders, Rose Gray and Ruth Rogers, fostered the development of Jamie Oliver, Hugh Fearnley-Whittingstall, Theo Randall, Stevie Parle, and Sam and Sam Clark of Moro, creating a lineage now in its second or third generation. Today, it is Tomos Parry of Brat, Max Rocha at Café Cecilia or Yohei Furuhashi at Toklas who are carrying elements of its ethos out into the world.

That conveyor belt of talent may be described as an unforeseen byproduct of the environment Gray, who died in 2010 , and Rogers, still very much in charge, created together. The kitchen currently has a roughly 50:50 male-female split, and each week chefs work four single shifts (9am to 5pm or 3pm to 11pm) and at most one double shift. Wyn Owen is trying to eradicate double shifts as they’re “the worst thing about hospitality”. Working parents are offered flexible hours, and the 150 staff can apply for bursaries from the Rose Gray Foundation for their personal and professional development. These have been used to learn languages, research cookbooks or take courses in charcuterie.

River Cafe founder Ruth Rogers (centre), with current executive head chefs Sian Wyn Owen (left) and Joe Trivelli (right).

Wyn Owen is wary of portraying the River Cafe as a “sickly, happy family”, saying: “it’s a stressful working environment meeting two non-negotiable deadlines a day – lunch and dinner.” In summer, the kitchen can do 200 covers at lunch on a Monday, but its chefs tend to stay for several years. Wyn Owen, 50, and Trivelli, 48, have both been there for more than 20 years. Stay long enough, explains Wyn Owen, and, “by osmosis, in real time”, chefs learn to “properly cook”.

Trivelli and Wyn Owen are disappointed when, instead of staying in restaurants, talented alumni leave the industry, often to become private chefs. “It’s sad they’ve vanished inside someone’s house to make scrambled eggs,” says Wyn Owen. “We’re restaurant chefs and you want them to carry on the mantle.”

But a notable number of ex-River Cafe chefs do exactly that: go on to lead highly rated kitchens.

Anna Tobias

Chef-owner, Cafe Deco , London; she worked at the River Cafe from 2010 to 2013

“When I joined the River Cafe I was 23 and had only been cooking for 18 months. I was very fresh and not entirely sure I wanted to cook any more. I was in a personally difficult moment and my life could have gone another way. But I thought I’d try one more place: I only applied to the River Cafe, got the job and luckily stayed on the cooking path. It was the River Cafe or rethink.

From an employee perspective, there was a level of glamour that felt enticing – big team, huge open kitchen, everyone knew the books, Jamie Oliver had come out of there.

Chef Anna Tobias photographed at her restaurant Café Deco

In the morning, everyone does raw prep, filleting fish and butchery. That was a learning curve. Scaling eight sea bass each day is grim, but you get really good at it. More established chefs teach the newcomers with energy, enthusiasm and in detail. After that, I felt confident in my skills to tutor people. At Cafe Deco, that’s a large part of my job. I love teaching.

The cooking processes behind food described as ‘simple’ – in essence, enjoying ingredients without mucking about with them – aren’t necessarily simple, and those processes must be perfect. That’s the point of going to a restaurant. You get to enjoy a peeled plum cherry tomato that you would never bother peeling at home.

Rose had died two or three weeks before I joined and, when learning dishes from other chefs, instructions would often be prefaced with, ‘Rose used to say’, ‘Rose would do this’, or ‘Rose would hate that’. She was very much there. There was real togetherness and an atmosphere of cooking well, for Ruthie, but keeping Rose’s standards, too.

Cooking simply and seasonally requires great care in produce quality. At the River Cafe, tasting the first summer basil, porcini or cherries together, these were are all incredibly exciting moments. I work with tiny farms who can only deliver certain amounts at Cafe Deco, particularly on the veg side. If the produce isn’t incredible the food will, at best, be average to good-ish.

Early on, I remember the first borlotti beans coming in. Ruthie cooked them in the oven and put on a dish of borlotti, good oil and chopped parsley. That was it. That’s bold cooking with strong belief in a delicious product. It requires way more confidence than cooking with a million flourishes on a plate.

The beauty of the River Cafe is that people stay a long time. As an ambitious chef, that’s also a problem. You hit a glass ceiling where you’re banking on someone leaving to get more responsibility. I wanted to learn new skills: write menus, how to cost, have more of a creative voice. I went to Rochelle Canteen and, after a year, was made head chef.

I think of Cafe Deco’s menu as a brainchild of all my former bosses and my own style. My gnudi with good, new season olive oil or my pappa al pomodoro soup aren’t carbon copies, but I take inspiration from the River Cafe. Why wouldn’t I bring some of that learning into my own cooking?”

Avinash Shashidhara

Head chef, Pahli Hill Bandra Bhai , London; he worked at the River Cafe from 2008 to 2018

“In Bangalore, I worked at Italia, where Antonio Carluccio was a consultant. He and Priya Paul [the chair of Park Hotels India, where Shashidhara trained as a chef] would bring in cookbooks, including the blue River Caf e and Easy , and say, ‘This is the kind of food we want.’ I’d look at them thinking, ‘This place must be amazing,’ but I never thought I’d work there.

In 2005, I moved to the UK (there was a huge chef shortage in Britain and agencies were recruiting in India) and in 2006 got a job at the Old Bridge Hotel in Huntingdon. The owner, John Hoskins, was friends with Rose Gray’s son, Ossie [a former River Cafe general manager], and John sent us for lunch at the River Cafe. I loved it.

Walking along the banks of the Thames and seeing the Harrod’s Furniture Depository in Barnes was like walking through the cookbooks. The food was so simple, so seasonal, nothing like I’d cooked or eaten. My palate wasn’t complex and I remember the olive oil tasted slightly unpleasant to me, bitter and peppery. Having tried the recipe, I had the chocolate nemesis for dessert and the quality was completely different.

Avinash Shashidhara, at Pahli Hill Bhandra Bhai restaurant, London.

I arrived at the restaurant in 2008 as a junior chef, starting at the bottom on cold starters and desserts, as everybody does. I trained in French fine dining and had to unlearn everything. The River Cafe way meant elegant but rustic. Sian [Wyn Owen] would say, ‘Babes, imagine you’re at home, helping yourself, that’s how I want you to plate food.’ It was a huge change in how I looked at food.

It works in a fascinating way which is never repetitive. One head chef starts at 9am, another at 3pm, and each writes that day’s lunch and dinner menu. Chefs get a section to work on each service, which changes daily, and over months you move around to, say, hot starters, pasta, the wood-fired oven.

At 10.30am, you also get a jobs list where you’re making risotto or roasting veal for different sections. So every day you’re learning about new dishes and ingredients. Training is intense. Even making salsa verde, somebody would show me start to finish. Next time, you do it with another chef. Third time on your own, but with senior chefs checking it. There is no scope for inconsistency.

Rose and Ruthie were like mothers to me. They could be harsh critics but if you messed up you didn’t get shouted at. You didn’t feel personally attacked. They were always willing to show you what you’d done wrong. This created high standards. People wanted to do their best but they weren’t scared to make mistakes.

I came out of the River Cafe a calmer chef. Now I’m heading a kitchen, managing 10 chefs, some in their 50s. If something isn’t good enough, I tell people on a professional basis and, importantly, show them how to do it. The River Cafe changed the way I handle people.

I had a good work-life balance there. The annual wine and olive oil trips to Italy are a massive perk. I went on 10. You’re taken to hidden restaurants in Tuscany or feasts with producers’ families to understand the River Cafe ethos. You’re in the bubble, part of the family. Why would we leave?

Eventually, I needed my own identity. After 10 years, you’re certainly confident you can set up your own restaurant. The River Cafe’s approach of letting ingredients shine is visible at Pahli Hill. I don’t change my menu daily, but I’m in constant touch with my suppliers and use exciting seasonal produce as it comes in: nettles, spring lamb, girolles. I see similarities in Italian and Indian food culture – everything revolves around family and seasonality.”

Chef-owner, Sonny Stores , Bristol; he worked at the River Cafe from 2014 to 2018

“I’d applied for jobs at three places in London: Moro, Barrafina and the River Cafe. The first interview I got was at the River Cafe. I started my trial week the next day and then got the job.

I was nervous going in. I hadn’t eaten there but the restaurant was always talked about in other kitchens because of the cookbooks and its influence. It’s a Michelin-starred restaurant serving relaxed food, and there aren’t loads of those. Plus, it’s a big restaurant: 10 chefs on a busy shift, the biggest kitchen I’ve worked in.

Pegs Quinn at Sonny Stores, Bristol.

The amount of time you’re in the kitchen was really manageable. There was space and time for the staff to teach you in depth, while I was dealing with the best produce I’ve ever seen. A senior or head chef would always be around to show you a specific dish. You might get the cookbook out and read the recipe while working together, so you understood how and why it’s cooked that way.

Joe [Trivelli] taught me how to make tomato sauce; Sian [Wyn Owen] is a wizard with artichokes; I learned how to cook sweetbreads with Danny [Bohan, the restaurant’s head chef]. We do that now at Sonny Stores. I’ve sent staff on stages to the River Cafe or to Anna [Tobias] at Cafe Deco. We break lambs down with our local butcher – learning from people who know.

We say Sonny Stores is Italian-inspired. We’re not as strict as the River Cafe and we have a much smaller team of three chefs. Within that, we work with the same ethos. It’s a changing, seasonal menu, using the best produce we can get, cooking in a simple way and not cutting corners. There aren’t exact translations of River Cafe dishes on the menu, but there are similarities in flavour combinations or River Cafe-inspired dishes made with different cuts. There’s regularly a pork tonnato dish on, which is done with veal at the River Cafe.

Keeping staff happy and maintaining a constant team is something I’ve taken from the River Cafe. They run a civilised kitchen. No swearing. No shouting. What Sian, Joe and Ruthie do, getting brilliant food out without it being a place where people get berated, there’s a skill in that.

Everybody sits down together around 4pm for a staff meal at the River Cafe, outside if the weather is good. That time-out is massively important and the staff food was mindblowing: sea bass or monkfish that hadn’t been used in the restaurant, fresh pastas and raviolis. We eat together at Sonny Stores. If you’ve not had that meal and sit down before service, you’re not going to make good choices later on.

Today, there are chefs working on seasonal, changing menus who haven’t been near the River Cafe. Its relaxed, confident simplicity bled into the wider restaurant community. You see its chocolate nemesis everywhere.

I once did a shift with Jeremy Lee at Quo Vadis and, if not exactly word for word, he put it, ‘Well, it’s all River Cafe now, isn’t it?’”

Michelin guide’s point of view.

It should go without saying, but be sure to ask for a seat on the terrace at this icon of London's Italian restaurant scene. The on-view kitchen with its wood-fired oven dominates the stylish and buzzing riverside room and the menu bursts with authentic Italian flavours which make one’s mouth water in anticipation. The honest, hearty dishes have a rustic Italian simplicity, relying as they do on the quality of their ingredients, whether that be clams, crab or wild sea bass. Arguably the best Italian wine list in London is the icing on the cake.

London’s Best Italian Restaurants

Share All sharing options for: London’s Best Italian Restaurants

Britain has come a long way from sourcing olive oil over the pharmacy counter and being wowed by Elizabeth David’s revelatory prose on Mediterranean cooking — London’s Italian restaurant scene is all the better for it. Now, it’s possible to get a taste of Rome in Old Street , take a trip to the Amalfi Coast via Clapham , or be charmed by classic Neapolitan pizza in Ealing . There’s not a checked tablecloth or oversized pepper grinder in sight: just exquisite pasta , pizza , and much more.

Santa Maria Pizzeria

It’s Neapolitan all the way at Ealing’s Santa Maria. Keep things traditional with the margherita: a slim base topped with San Marzano tomatoes, mozzarella and parmesan. However, the purists also have a short vegan (mamma mia!) menu including a (soy) cream of potato pie with onions and peppers. There are also locations in Chelsea and Fitzrovia, but this is the original, and remains the sine qua non of Neapolitan pizza in London , depending on who is making the claim.

The River Café

An iconic pillar of Italian dining in London, The River Café in Hammersmith is as revered today as when Ruth Rogers and the late Rose Gray opened its doors more than 30 years ago. The menu, as it has always done, sings to the tune of the seasons and shows off the finest ingredients. Expect risotto with winter greens, dover sole whole roasted in the hot pink wood oven or buffalo ricotta-stuffed ravioli drenched in marjoram butter. There’s always one constant: the decadent chocolate nemesis dessert.

London’s Iconic Dishes

Locanda Locatelli

One for special occasions, Giorgio Locatelli’s Locanda Locatelli is just as thrilling as it was when it opened nearly 20 years ago. The convivial atmosphere in Marylebone is the result of Locatelli’s unstinting commitment to hospitality excellence, which, like his food, never rests on well-earned laurels. Brilliant dishes like freshly made pappardelle with ceps; or malfatti potato parcels with peppers, mint, and Parmesan; and roast monkfish with walnut and caper sauce and samphire keep diners happy, and coming back for more.

Vasco & Piero's Pavilion Italian Restaurant

This Soho stalwart has lost none of its Umbrian charm since its unceremonious removal from Poland Street. In new premises, conscientious fresh pasta still rules, with Tuscan sausages, grilled fish, and chicken Milanese taking centre stage come mains.

Order a house vermouth on the rocks then dive headfirst into Sorella’s succinct menu for a taste of the Amalfi Coast in Clapham . Nibble on deep-fried Nocellara olives and perhaps some peppery pork and fennel salumi. Proving beige is best, there’s tagliatelle with wild mushrooms and truffle or the underrated squash gnocchi with chard. Charred whole plaice and crispy potatoes provide a cheering third act. Then dessert. There’s no doubt that the malted barley affogato is deserving of its fan base but the perfectly balanced plate of Casatica di Bufala, plums, honey and walnut crackers is another worthy dish. Or, just get both.

It’s fair to say that Soho’s Bar Italia is an institution, serving espressos from 7 a.m. to 5 a.m. Watch Frith Street go by from an outside table or grab a stool inside the narrow, paraphernalia-filled cafe. Cappuccinos and croissants are order of the day for breakfast, or stop by for a late-night cannolo and caffeine kick.

Pull up a bright red chair outside the bright blue Italo deli on the corner of a leafy street in Vauxhall. There might be vitello tonnato, cold sliced veal with a heavy slick of creamy sauce with capers, or plates nearly overflowing with golden polenta, wild mushrooms and sage. Browse the colourful shelves, packed full of Italian imports, before leaving with some pasta or exemplary canned tomatoes.

Cafe Murano Covent Garden

For refined and generous dishes, look no further than Angela Hartnett’s Café Murano. The menu picks the best from Italy’s northern regions: tortelli stuffed with pumpkin; hearty risotto Milanese with osso bucco. Punchy flavours accent simply cooked meat and fish dishes, seen in tender grilled octopus with vibrant salsa verde and borlotti beans, or braised rabbit in a heady rosemary and tomato stew. There’s also a St James’ outpost of the restaurant and a Bermondsey location, too, but head for the Covent Garden spot and drop by the next-door pastificio for some homemade pasta to take home.

London’s Essential Italian Deli Restaurants

Ciao Bella in Bloomsbury embodies everything there is to love about a proper, old-school Italian restaurant. Step through the door to find an organised chaos of families crowded around tables, waiters weaving around the room with plates held high. Downstairs, rows of tables are packed into the room and packets of breadsticks await diners in their place settings. Snack on generous lumps of salty parmesan and sip robust chianti while deciding between spaghetti with clams or meatballs — pasta has the perfect al dente bite here. Or, there’s simply dressed grilled dover sole, and breaded, fried veal escalope, tangy with lemon. Take an after-dinner espresso out on the Lambs Conduit Street terrace, under glowing heaters.

10 Terrific Tiramisùs to Try In London

It would be a mistake to classify Polpo founder Russell Norman’s new restaurant, on Farringdon’s Greenhill Rents, as a Tuscan nostalgia trip. Yes, bistecca alla Fiorentina is charred on the grill bars, flames licking up, before being served unadorned. Yes, chicken liver crostini; pasta e fagioli; red-and-white gingham tablecloths and Parmesan spooned from metal bowls. Yes, billowing tiramisu. Yes, plentiful Negronis; a stand-up bar where the coffee is cheaper than sitting down. But this is a London dining room that feels like it’s been around forever, not stuck in an endless Italian past.

A diner sits over a plate of pasta, holding a fork, with salad to its left. Everything is on white plates, with white tablecloths, and a half-drunk glass of red wine sits in the centre.

Where to Eat Pasta in London

Younger sibling to The Clove Club in Shoreditch, Luca is just as understatedly elegant. This quietly glamorous Clerkenwell restaurant serves ‘Britalian’ dishes — Italian food mostly using British produce. First things first, order a portion of the crispy parmesan fries, and don’t share. Dishes move with the time of year: it’s always worth trying whichever pasta is paired with the seasonal pesto. It won’t be traditional — think pistachio and spinach or kale and chilli — but don’t fear change. Then there are dishes made for comfort: tender ox cheek with lemon polenta, Hebridean lamb with bagna cauda, or a wedge of glazed, roasted Delica pumpkin with chestnuts and buttered onions.

A sleek, chic dining room in Islington sets the scene for Trullo’s unfussy Italian food. Dishes take the best of seasonal British produce and spin it into great antipasti, fantastic pastas, and secondi fresh from the charcoal grill. Skip the queues at Padella, the fresh pasta spot in Borough Market , and enjoy the signature beef shin pappardelle or pici cacio e pepe at a slower pace. There’s also ever so smoky aubergine parmigiana and hearty Black Hampshire pork chop with salsa verde on a bed of polenta. The accessible wine list is fantastic.

The 38 Essential Restaurants in London

Chris Leach (formerly Sager + Wilde) and Smokestak’s David Carter have moved in to Shoreditch after a long stint in Soho. To go with top antipasti, including a new pig skin ragu with pig skin double banker, there’s a carousel of pasta plates. There’s usually something stuffed, perhaps with pumpkin or mushroom, and ribbons of pappardelle tossed through ox cheek or duck ragù to go with delicate tortellini bobbing in brodo. But there’s almost always the outrageous brown crab cacio e pepe — order it or regret it.

Where to Eat in London on New Year’s Eve

With a Trullo alumnus behind the stove and an ex-Barrafina and Koya City general manager on the floor, Legare has a short but sweet menu from which to pick and mix snacks, antipasti and pastas. Build a world-beating ham sandwich with gnocchi fritti and mortadella; dive into tajarin drenched in butter and sage; and eat those greens in the form of baby gem lettuce drizzled with gorgonzola, sharp pickled shallot, and crunchy pangrattato.

A bright, white room, a short simple menu and rustic Italian food: that’s Artusi in Peckham. Dishes can change throughout the week, depending what produce is at its best, and pasta is handmade daily at the charming neighbourhood joint. Expect pasta e fagioli or ribbons of chestnut tagliatelle and secondi like bream with peperonata or bavette with pumpkin. Don’t miss the incredible set Sunday lunch: primi, secondi and dolci for a steal at £25. The Artusi crew are also behind the brilliant Marcella, in Deptford.

A stone’s throw from Hackney and Columbia Roads , Campania serves Italian food with a southern accent. The rustic warren of three dining rooms — including one particularly gorgeous covered courtyard — scattered with wooden furniture and candles stuck in empty wine bottles sets the stage. Homemade pasta is what does best here. Plump gnudi in sage butter, rich lamb ragù in a tangle of green pappardelle, and a tumble of tagliatelle alla vongole. Save room for the fluffy, boozy tiramisu.

12 Secluded Courtyards and Gardens for a Beautiful Summer Dinner in London

This chilled-out spot sits above a canal itself, but resides in Hackney. The wine list is excellent so get into the bacaro spirit and stop by for a glass and cicchetti like scarlet prawns and crostini. Staying for a plate of homemade pasta which shows off seasonal British ingredients is also highly recommended. Cornish crab is tangled through tagliolini, plump ravioli are stuffed with pumpkin, and porcini is given a starring role with tagliatelle. Make sure to get a crisp cannolo before departure.

The River Cafe

riverboat cafe london

Ratings and reviews

Food and ambience, location and contact, michelin guide's point of view.

Visited the restaurant for lunch, and we can only describe the experience as mediocre. This is not a Michelin experience we were hoping for, when the prices for a starter range from £22 to £30 and mains from £40 to £50 (The same as 2... Michelin star - Dinner by Heston Blumenthal at the mandarin Oriental hotel) we've been lucky enough to eat in some of the best restaurants in London and the world, and this falls short. I think this serves the local clientele very well as a hang out for lunch. We weren't expecting fine dining but it's the small details that count like being welcomed and being looked after. The service was non-existent, small details like - As soon as we sat down and took our coats off the bread was put on our table immediately. With no introduction or welcoming. the menu was put down in front of us and wasn't explained at all. the bread plate wasn't cleared until the end of the starters were cleared. No olive oil or balsamic oil offered with the bread. Having asked for a wine menu to choose for the main course, it was about 15 minutes went by with about 10 different people walking past and no one stopped to ask if you would like more drinks. I had to call over someone to order. The food hearty and we'll cooked, but was not exceptional, the veal tartrate was very bland, no flavour and was full of oil. The lamb main was as good as a carvery served in my local pub. More

The food was exemplary and the service good. Great well crafted menu. We dined on the terrace which was an apt welcome back to summer and River Cafe. Note to waiters though ... grilled calamari requires a steak knife to eat it with any elegance... ... More

Booked a long way in advance for lunch menu at £34 a head for 3 courses. It’s great that it’s proving popular but....the restaurant is packing in 110+ covers at each of two sittings. We had to queue outside in the rain before squeezing into... the very crowded reception. Tables were tightly packed and it’s very noisy. Staff are nice but oddly casual - it seems to be more about crowd management than enjoying a good meal. My main course was cold - very poor for such a highly rated place. They did offer a pudding on the house but I would rather have been able to eat my main at the same time as the rest of the table. Good but not great food and £34 soon turns into £60 a head with coffee and ONE glass of wine. A disappointing experience. More

We looked forward with great anticipation to our dinner based on reviews. It is a great place to see and be seen with a nice atmosphere, but don't make the trip for the food. Not many vegan/vegetarian choices. The pigeon main course was abysmal. Undercooked,... little flavor, poor presentation, and not even cut into pieces and therefore a struggle to eat. The steak was only marginally better -- asked for medium rare and got very rare. Lying on lumpy potatoes with an unexceptional horseradish sauce on the side. The waiter was great and gave us credit for the pigeon, but the meal was still horribly overpriced for what was delivered. The highlight of the night was the lemon custard slice, which was delicious. London is full of superb restaurants, but The River Cafe is not one of them.... More

So disappointing that this veritable institution has on the evidence of our visit become so poor. Rushing to get us to down our food and the next sitting in the service was sadly poor from the start. Tepid main courses such that four out of... our table of six had to be sent back. Just in case you are wondering I’ve never insisted on this before. Service was excessively rapid and just left the feeling that we were to be fleeced as fast as possible. Dietary requirements which were notified in advance were ignored and brushed off when challenged on why they weren’t being catered for. Each course was presented with unseemly haste which provoked as much indigestion as indignation. More

very average Italian food at very high prices. This sort of fayre is available all over central London for less, including better locations than Hammersmith. I really struggle to comprehend how simple pasta dishes here are same price as highly technical French food at La... Gavroche et al. Atmosphere was ok. Garden/outside was pleasant. Inside resembles a late 80's sports centre. Staff were cordial enough, although the waiter did invite himself in to our conversation which was a bit odd. It started raining at end of meal, the restaurant didn't seem prepared for this event which was surprising. We actually had to cancel our coffee and cheese as we were not going to dine in teh rain. and showed a real lack of forethought considering it always rains in the UK. Wine list was comprehensive but only Italian, can see the logic but annoying nonetheless. Ticked off the list but would not go back when there are literally hundreds of restaurants in London which are better value, quality, experience and location. Our bill was circa £300 for two and it would be much better spent in other fine dining restaurants that warrant the price tag. More

I was dreading our visit for dinner with friends as my wife who is well versed on her food and drink dined here some weeks earlier and was totally underwhelmed with the experience and aghast at the prices. Sadly my fears came true. Whilst packed... to the brim with a great atmosphere, the food was average, the plates were too large and couldn’t even fit on the table without shuffling things around, cheap paper table clothes and disgusting cheap disgusting glassware to savour over priced wine; my goodness why on earth was this place jam packed and so busy. The service was not brilliant with poor staff training for an establishment of this calibor. This place is exorbitantly priced for the quality of food and the overall experience. I am toooo embarrassed to share the price of the bill and gobsmacked why on earth it was full. If anyone knows please tell but I will take a lot of convincing. Sadly been there, done that and definitely never again. I dont like to post a damming report but in this case feel totally justified. More

The River Cafe, one Michelin star if you please, had been on my radar for years but somehow I'd never got round to eating there. Last Friday, after a brilliant week of birthday celebrations for my beloved's Big Birthday we had one final evening out... with just the family. What a shock. To start I ordered scallop fritti with artichokes. Two tiny overcooked oversalted rubbery scallops with bits of battered artichoke. £14. For my main I chose the turbot, others had beef sirloin and the daughter in law had a small dover sole. My turbot was cooked okay, but it came with shrivelled cold broad beans (from a tin?) and some stringy greenery that was also cold and impossible to cut. Chewy, wet, tasteless. The beef was accompanied by a slice of aubergine and, I think, a tomato. So by being pretentiously Italian, in the River Cafe you can't order sides of veg or potatoes. I can reel off a list of fabulous and expensive restaurants where I've had divine food from all over the world (Peru anyone) and when you pay high prices you expect exceptional food which is memorable. The only thing I remember about our dinner was the mediocre food and the ridiculous cost of it. Each main was £45 or £46 4 people had dessert, we drank aperitifs and had two bottles of wine. I had a small glass of white sauvignon which was so acidic I left it. (also £14) The bill was £770. Service was fine, except no one took our coats- that might have been Covid related which no one bothered to explain. The design of the River Cafe is intentionally minimal but the toilets were also a shock. Cheap, basic - the toilets in our local pub are better than these. The River Cafe is always packed and I expect many are repeat customers. Shows you can fool most of the people all of the time. However, this is no joke for discerning customers, but I expect the owners are laughing all the way to the bank. More

Revisiting this renowned eater after over a decade The food was fresh and well-cooked, but lacked the kind of flair/wow factor you find at somewhere like Locatellis. We had langoustines, squid and sea bass. All ably cooked, and sourced, but really nothing that special. In... Bristol you can find this kind of food for half the price and cooked with so much love, which was totally absent. The restaurant seems to have sat on its laurels since I was last here. The wine was over-priced and served in an ice bucket that sat ON THE FLOOR the whole time. The almond tart was a little greasy, and not improved for being so...quite disappointing on the whole. More

I know I will be in the minority here writing this review, but I recently went to the River Cafe. I know many people who swear its their favourite restaurant in London, and it has been around for a long time. The food is very... good, but it is ridiculously over priced for what it is. If you go to Italy you'd pay a tenth of the price for the same food. What really wound me up, was that we order two antipasti dishes (starters) and two primi dishes (pasta and rice), which we were asked if we wanted as our main as we didn't order any secondi (meat and fish). When the bill came they had charged us double (over £40 per pasta dish) for our primi dishes as we had them as our main course. They didn't tell us that's what they were going to do, I thought we were just confirming we weren't having three courses. I also found it entertaining as others have commented that people's decanted, expensive wine is put on the floor next to the table. As I said I'm clearly in the minority as the place was packed and you have to book far in advance. It was also clear that there were a lot of regulars there. I don't think the food is that special that it justifies the price and Ruth probably can't believe what people are willing to pay. More

I recently went there for the first time for my birthday dinner. We were already shocked by the paper table cloth and loud (albeit buzzy) atmosphere. Waiters/waitresses young and not well trained, not knowing who at the table ordered which food or drinks. The food... was fine (but not more than that) but not living up to the price tag of £30 for a starter or pasta/primeri. Not only that, the secondi meat dish (nearly £50) was swimming in an oily juis, it was plated horrendously, no finesse but looking the opposite of appetising and definitely not what I expect from a Michelin restaurant. Overall very disappointing and not sure how they maintained the Michelin star and what the hype around the restaurant is. It might have been great in the good old days but not anymore! More

Eight of us has organised a 70th birthday celebration for a friend and his wife. The service certainly did not stand out for a Michelin star restaurant The waiter muddled up the starter. and was confused. We had to pour our own wine and water... When our main courses arrived the waiter stretched across one of our guests in order to deliver food instead of delivering from behind. Considering the supposed reputation of this restaurant , the staff are not up to scratch and this is not acceptable Our food quality was of a high standard but far too expensive and nothing to write home about. I have certainly had better Italian food elsewhere in London. The restaurant was buzzy and full which was good, but it was hard to hear one another Overall this was not a memorable dining experience apart from the hefty bill. The owner needs to review certain aspects and update We would probably not return More

If you are in the mode for good Italian food in West London I would recommend going somewhere else. The food served is very pricy and average at best. Somehow, the restaurant was very busy on a Tuesday evening where there are a lot of... tables crowded together. The staff kept on bumping in to my chair so it was less than relaxing. The whole table decided to have pasta as a main and was recommended to have the portion as it was. For £28 we each got a ridiculously small amount of pasta. I would have preferred to pay a bit more to get a larger portion but trusted the waiter who said it was a good sized portion. The pasta was ok but nothing special and a bit bland. Service was not very good at all, We had to wait a long time to be offered to order a drink when we arrived in the restaurant. It is so disappointing to have this average experience of a place I have been wanting to visit for some time. I will not be coming back since there are plenty of better restaurants that offer good value for money. More

Very, very disappointing, I booked the terrace on a Sunday afternoon weeks in advance to celebrate our and my sister's ruby wedding anniversaries. We arrived on time to be told our table was not ready but invited to have drinks on the lawn while we... waited, no problem we thought, however there was no where to sit and nobody to take our drinks order. After waiting 15 minutes without seeing anyone my brother in-law went to find some staff, this set the tone for the whole afternoon. We were seated about 30 minutes later, service was hopeless and the food average considering the high prices. We have eaten so much better in many basic Italian restaurants. Supposedly 'the best Italian restaurant in London' , what a joke, I certainly do not think so. Before we left we asked to speak to the duty manager and were fobbed of with a bottle of olive oil and a cook book !! Don't waste your money !! More

Food was okay, by no means the best italian I've ever had, desserts were pleasant would recommend the almond tart. However the COVID measures they had taken were disappointing. There was no distancing between the tables, people in the kitchen/bar area frequently had their masks... pulled down and as for the bread you're served at the start i frequently saw people touching ipads and other things then without washing their hands cutting and serving people bread to eat, which was quite shocking. Given the prices you can afford to have less tables actually distance people out. More

THE RIVER CAFE, London - Menu, Prices, Restaurant Reviews & Reservations - Tripadvisor

The chef at London's Chishuru just won her first Michelin star. She started with a competition to open a pop-up restaurant.

  • Joké Bakare once ran a fish-and-chip cart as a student in Nigeria.
  • After moving to the UK and working in property, she pursued her dream of opening a restaurant.
  • Bakare runs Chishuru and just became the UK's first Black female Michelin-starred chef.

Insider Today

This as-told-to essay is based on an interview with the founder and chef of Chishuru, Joké Bakare, about pursuing her dream of opening a restaurant. The following has been edited for length and clarity.

I had always dreamed of opening my own restaurant one day.

When I was studying biological sciences at Ahmadu Bello University in Zaria, Kaduna, northern Nigeria, I ran a fish-and-chip cart in my spare time.

But when I moved to the UK 25 years ago, life got in the way, and I ended up working in property management.

In 2018, I started running several supper clubs in my spare time. As I started getting back into my passion, I could not shake the desire to have my own premises, but I had no idea how to get into the industry.

A year later, some friends spotted a competition run by Brixton Village in south London — they were offering the winner a three-month pop-up restaurant.

They convinced me to enter, and to my amazement, I won !

Early days in Brixton Village

Chishuru didn't open until September 2020 because COVID-19 got in the way.

But soon after opening, the well-known food and restaurant critic Jay Rayner of The Observer came in and kindly gave us a rave review. Brixton Village then asked me to make the pop-up restaurant permanent.

In some ways, the Brixton restaurant was straightforward — it was a small site with just 18 covers inside and 14 outside.

But running a small independent restaurant means you have to become an expert in everything from grease traps and licensing to supplier management. I did everything myself at first.

The challenges came, ironically, with the reviews and recognition we were lucky enough to get — customers were arriving with sky-high expectations that we struggled to meet in a tiny site with wobbly tables and no toilets.

So I took on a general manager to run front-of-house operations and asked my friend Matt Paice to be my business partner in May 2021. He helped with everything from day-to-day operations to finance to strategy to wine .

The restaurant's success continued and in April 2022, Time Out named Chishuru as London's best restaurant .

But it was clear we had outgrown the site. So, after running a few more pop-up restaurants around London, we settled on our Fitzrovia space in central London last September .

Michelin visits

We figured the Michelin Guide was interested in us in the Brixton days because they'd visited anonymously and tweeted some photos afterward. An anonymous visit happened again last autumn at the new site .

Then, two weeks before the Michelin Guide ceremony, an invite turned up in our inboxes. We thought perhaps it could be a Bib Gourmand — the prize for "good food at a reasonable price."

But they'd already announced that list a week before. So we went into the ceremony not really knowing why we were there.

They announced 17 new stars for restaurants across the UK and made it sound like that was the whole list.

But then the event host said "we have one more star to give … it's a chef and she's cooking…" and I didn't hear any more words after that because I knew it was me. I was stunned into silence.

A few weeks later, it honestly still hasn't sunk in.

Matt, my business partner, pointed out that I would be the first Black female Michelin-starred chef in the UK and only the second in the world. That really resonate d.

I've had literally thousands of messages from all over the world and a personal letter of congratulations from the mayor of London. To get a "well done" card from the legendary three-star French restaurant Mirazur was especially touching.

We've had to turn down dozens of media requests from TV and radio broadcasters. I'd love to do more, but we have a restaurant to operate here!

Cook from your heart

The food I serve at Chishuru is the food of my heritage and that will never not be exciting to me.

It's the food that my grandmother might have cooked but with a London restaurant spin .

One of the joys of Chishuru is introducing West African recipes, ingredients and combinations to customers who may well have never encountered them before.

Ingredients such as uziza, a West African black pepper; uda, a smokey spice; or sauces such as egusi, made from wild watermelon seeds, are bread and butter to me but are rarely seen on London restaurant tables. We have the advantage of offering something no one else does.

I'd love to see more West African chefs come together to share knowledge — perhaps a collective of us. But for now, the advice I give young female chefs with a dream like mine is to cook from your heart and believe in yourself.

Finally doing the job I've always wanted makes me feel fulfilled. It's honestly that simple. If you want to do it, do it — nobody is putting obstacles in your way, only you.

Tourists walk past boarded gates after a man was arrested after crashing his vehicle, at...

LONDON (AP) — A driver who plowed a car into the gates of Buckingham Palace has been arrested on suspicion of criminal damage, London police said Sunday.

The crash early Saturday wasn’t considered terrorism-related and no one was injured, the Metropolitan Police force said.

The driver was arrested by armed officers and held under the Mental Health Act after being taken to a hospital. He has since been released on bail.

Metal fencing was placed in front of the entrance to the palace and the gates were boarded up Sunday as tourists strolled past in the rain.

Police said they were investigating the circumstances of the crash.
