On board with Jan Verkerk, owner of explorer yacht Legend

Builder, owner, captain, engineer, charterer… superyacht owner Jan Verkerk, the Dutchman who created the award-winning explorer Legend , explains his many talents to Dominique Afacan.

Jan Verkerk laughs easily, and little wonder – he’s making a profit from his passion. As a young boy of eight in Holland, sailing around the waters of Loosdrecht on a wooden boat given to him by his father, he could never have dreamed that he’d end up building and owning superyachts of his own, capable of exploring the world’s most remote regions and carrying the world’s wealthiest customers.

Fast forward 40-odd years and that dream is now Verkerk’s happy reality. While many view superyacht ownership as a frivolous extravagance, Verkerk always believed there was money to be made in the charter business. Now he’s proving it, one $500,000 trip at a time. So just how has he pulled it off? “I build my own boats – plus, my technical background makes me very handy,” says Verkerk, from his home just outside Utrecht, referencing his decision at 18 to skip university and train as a mechanic. “I used to buy old boats when I was growing up and teach myself how to fix them up for racing. Then the big work began and I was experienced enough to handle it.”

It’s nothing new to find owners who are heavily involved in the build of their superyachts, but Verkerk’s commitment is different. For his latest creation, the 77.4 metre ice-breaker Legend , he spent seven days a week at the shipyard for two and a half years, sometimes pushing through until the early hours to stay on schedule. He has an encyclopaedic knowledge of every fitting, down to the last light bulb, such is the level of his involvement and technical expertise. “Because I build my own boats in rented facilities,” he adds, “I am able to make them a little more cheaply. It’s a clever way of doing business.” In the case of Legend , which is now listed for sale with Fraser , Verkerk engaged Dutch shipyard Icon for the steelwork, but used his own sub-contractors to do everything else.

His recent successes suggest he is on to something with his DIY strategy. Launched last year, Legend was an industry game-changer, taking expedition sailing to a new level of luxury, and picking up the World Superyacht Award for best rebuilt yacht at the recent ceremony in Florence. Charter guests (and there’s room for 26 of them) can swim in the boat’s heated pool while they sail along the freezing Antarctic Peninsula, or they can climb into the boat’s three man U-Boat Worx submarine to find out what’s going on beneath the surface. Inside there’s a cinema, a gym, a spa and room for a grand piano. This year, she is already booked to go to the Baltic, Antarctica, Norway, the Caribbean, Greenland and the Med. Charter guests seem to be attracted by the opportunity for adventure, both on and off the boat.

Verkerk’s adventures in the charter world, however, haven’t always run so smoothly. The first boat he was serious about chartering, Jaguar , didn’t make any money at all. “She was a 38 metre classic boat and she was highly popular and active but it was difficult to make money with a yacht of this size,” recalls Verkerk. After a chance request to be part of a tandem charter trip with a yacht called Esmerelda , it occurred to him that most charter yachts could only host a limited number of guests. “I eventually realised the only way to make money was to scale up,” he explains.

His next boat, the ice-breaking Sherakhan , leapt up to 70 metres and was capable of sleeping 26 guests. Verkerk’s gamble paid off. Perfect for a growing market of adventurous charter guests, she sailed (and still sails) everywhere from South Georgia to French Polynesia , with Verkerk benefiting from economies of scale along the way. Sensing an increasing thirst from charter guests for exploration, when it came to buying another boat for his business, a powerful expedition yacht was the obvious choice.

Legend , originally a tug boat built in Holland for Russian clients, was an ice-breaker with potential, though she was far from perfect on first inspection. “She had already been rebuilt as a yacht, but not in quite the right way,” admits Verkerk. “At some point there had been a fire on board and the wheelhouse and the master cabin were destroyed.” It was just before 2008 and yachting was at its summit so the insurance company decided to keep it to sell. Then the financial crisis hit. That and the state of the boat meant that buying her didn’t break the bank. Rebuilding her, however, was another story.

“We basically built an entirely new boat,” recalls Verkerk. “Ninety per cent of the technology had to be replaced. From light bulbs to steering systems, polar code radios to the right size bed linen. It was a tremendous operation that took two years. The hardest thing was meeting qualifications – everything had to be beautiful, but it was also important that it didn’t burn. We needed certificates for every material – that side of things took a bit longer than we expected.”

Verkerk took charge of the interior design, too, adamant that Legend should stand out in the crowded charter market. “The idea was to make the boat as far from boring as possible. In many yachts, there’s one style – the design stays the same from the saloon to the master cabin. On Legend , we wanted it to be more of an adventure. The hallways might be pretty standard but every time you open a door, you enter a different world. People love it.” Verkerk was careful to consider exactly how the boat’s space would be used, crucial considering her most popular destinations. “When you go to Antarctica there are a lot of dull moments when you’re sailing and there is nothing to do. Most yachts are built with a focus on the exterior spaces but I felt the exact opposite was important with Legend .”

Regardless, the outside of the ship was far from neglected. “We built a swimming pool outside, which we heat to 35 degrees. It requires a tremendous amount of power and hot water to heat it to this temperature but people do love to swim out there in Antarctica,” says Verkerk. There’s also a heated barbecue area – but for every exterior design decision, the cold weather had to be taken into account. “It is designed so that when you sit, you’re out of the icy wind. You have to stand up to see the scenery.” Legend enjoys plenty of that and expeditions on the yacht have opened the owner’s eyes to some of the most astonishing parts of the world.

“Antarctica is absolutely number one when it comes to scenery and experience. This year we were one of the first boats through the Lemaire Channel and after that we went down to the Ukrainian base,” he says. “We were really breaking the ice – the ship was moving fantastically. And then the wildlife, well, what can you say? Nothing is afraid of you. When you experience it for the first time, you don’t know where to look, how to react.”

For those who have already ticked off Antarctica, he recommends South Georgia. “You think you’ve seen wildlife in Antarctica? You have no idea. You have to go to the shore and get the sea lions to make space for the tender. The whales are everywhere and there are millions of penguins – it is truly unbelievable.”

Although Verkerk sees great value in being able to sail to the world’s most remote destinations in the lap of luxury and with all the latest toys, he actually sees good service as the ultimate secret to building a successful charter boat. “It’s like booking a hotel,” he explains. “You initially get drawn in by looking at pictures of the swimming pool or the rooms online – but by the time you leave the thing you remember most is the staff: how nice they were to you, whether it was clean and whether the food was good. It all comes down to human interaction really.”

On board, he splits the duties a little differently from other yachts, hiring extra staff to take care of general management and leaving the captain free to run the boat. “I organise it like a hotel rather than a ship,” he explains. “On normal yachts the captain is very important. That’s also true in our case but on Legend he is not running the ‘hotel’, he is simply running the boat. For the service aspect, I tend to hire people with hotel backgrounds. For me it’s the only way you can do it.”

Verkerk got both his captain’s licence and his engineer’s licence in his mid-30s and often put both to good use on Sherakhan . Those days are over now, but he can’t resist spending at least some of his time on board in the engine room. “I love to see what is going on in there,” he says. “Perhaps that’s unusual!” Verkerk’s son has inherited the bug too and is already a captain at 28. The two worked together for a while, although his son is now on another yacht. Verkerk’s daughter, meanwhile, is studying to be a vet, but will nevertheless often accompany her father on expeditions to Antarctica. “She likes animals,” explains Verkerk, “so where else could be more beautiful?”

Surprisingly, given his obvious passion for superyachting, there are currently no plans for more projects. “I am 55 now and I’ve spent about 10 years non-stop on sea,” says Verkerk. “I am starting to want a bit more spare time. I like being at home so now I usually just do one trip a year on each boat.”

So how does home compare to life on board an ice-breaking superyacht? “I live in a farmhouse in a village outside of Utrecht. There’s water at the front and water at the back. It’s not extremely big or luxurious but I love it. Compared to the yachts, my life on land is very normal. Of course, it’s all relative!” Verkerk’s laugh rings out again. Time will tell whether he’ll be able to resist another adventure.

The Van de Stadt Legend 34 is a sturdy and seaworthy yacht, built for serious coastal and offshore cruising in all weathers. Duncan Kent sails one off Portland

Product Overview

Manufacturer:, price as reviewed:.

The owner Quetzal was launched in 1972 and bought by Guy Dickinson in 2006. Prior to then Guy owned a Hunter Sonata and a variety of small plywood cruisers and dinghies. Guy has upgraded Quetzal considerably, including replacing her old Sabb with a new 25hp Beta with a feathering three-bladed prop. He’s also added a new electric windlass, solar panels, upholstery, wiring and instruments. Guy keeps her on a mooring at Castle Cove SC (www.ccsc.org.uk) in Portland Harbour, where she is protected by the long harbour wall. CCSC has a recently built clubhouse overlooking the harbour and a membership of 350 cruisers and racers of all ages. The club also provides a range of training facilities.

It’s always interesting to sail boats from the 1970s, seeing how yacht design has evolved in 40 odd years, how hull shape and interior volume has come on, what remains and what has been lost. Few design houses have stood the test of time, are so well known or are as prolific as Van de Stadt.

They were famous for such well- known designs as the Trintella, Pionier, Excaliber, Invicta, Wing, Seal, Etap and many more cruising and racing yachts. Producing over 400 designs since 1933, and some 25,000 Van de Stadt-designed yachts were launched.

We joined retired GP Guy Dickinson for a sail aboard his 1972 Legend 34, Quetzal. The Legend 34 was produced from 1969, with the majority built by the Tyler Boat Company in Tunbridge.

Legend 34

Performance A seaworthy masthead sloop, 34 was designed and built for ocean sailing. Despite being heavy by today’s standards, she is predictable and drama-free in her handling and exhibits a thoroughly easy, sea-kindly motion through the steepest of seas, allowing her to make up in overall passage times what she might lose against a modern yacht in lighter airs and flatter seas. At first we tacked back and forth inside the harbour walls of Portland where the water was flatter, (with a reef in the genoa and full mainsail), making a healthy 6.0-6.5 knots in 16 knots true wind. This increased to 7.1 knots on her best point of sail, a close reach, but dropped a little to 5.6 knots with the wind on her quarter. Running downwind, we unfurled the rest of the genoa and went goose-winged. My guess is that she would most often give average passage speeds of between 5-6 knots with ease, provided the wind didn’t drop below 10 knots.

At the helm Designed around the IOR racing rules, the Legend has pronounced narrowing forward and aft, which reduces accommodation and narrows the cockpit. She’s easy to helm using her long tiller and bracing your feet against the seat opposite. Most controls fall to hand, which means she can be sailed singlehanded. The mainsheet runs along the bridgedeck and the primaries are beside the helm on the coamings. Guy has yet to install single- line reefing and lead it back to the cockpit, but he’s thinking about it when it’s time to replace her slab-converted roller boom.

Her lines are sweet and her overhangs add to the classic look, as well as increasing her waterline length and consequently her speed when heeled. Her original full-depth skeg-hung rudder means she can suffer a little from weather helm when overpressed, but nothing that reefing the sails can’t sort out. Some have had their skeg shortened by 200mm or so and the rudder extended forward a little to offer some balance to and ease the weight off the helm.

Legend 34

Sailplan She has a fairly conservative masthead sailplan with the option of a baby stay or removable inner forestay for a storm jib. Her short boom means her mainsail is relatively high-aspect and was originally designed to be furled around the roller boom. She has a 125 percent genoa sheeted to short tracks atop her teak toerails.

Her deck-stepped mast is supported by stout shrouds, including caps and fore-and- aft lowers with a single pair of straight spreaders. Quetzal has a removable inner forestay, which makes tacking the overlapping genoa a bit more difficult.

Deck layout She has a lazarette locker, which houses two big gas bottles and another seat large enough for all the fenders and lines. To port, a full-depth cockpit locker gobbles up the large stuff like inflatables, warps, fenders etc. and still provides room for a decent battery bank. Her coachroof is at a constant height, making the long handrails easy to grab, and her side decks are reasonably uncluttered, allowing unhindered access to the foredeck, which is rather narrow, but workable. High teak toerails help considerably going forward when heeled – they also look pretty too. The cleats are stout, as is the bow roller and other static deck gear.

Living aboard The companionway steps are very steep and the lower one is small, so care needs to be taken when descending. You arrive at a half bulkhead on the edge of the galley to port, where there’s a pole to grab to steady yourself. Headroom is 1.83m (6ft) all the way forward to the heads and handholds each side under the portlights – which are on the small side and don’t open, making it a little dark inside with all the teak joinery. The saloon has a couple of vents in addition to the main hatch.

She has up to six berths if you include the large forepeak V-berth (1.90m long, 2.10m wide at the head and 0.65m at the foot), the saloon double (converted by dropping the table), the single settee to starboard in the saloon and the quarterberth – the latter two making the best sea berths. The heads is where she compares least favourably to a modern cruiser. There’s no shower and only enough room for a smallcorner basin. A vent above keeps it fresh and there’s a small port for natural light. The heads door closes off the forecabin when fully opened and there’s a second door between it and the saloon for privacy. A hanging locker opposite is useful for stowing oilskins. There is plenty of deep stowage beneath the forepeak bunks, but access isn’t easy and there are no shelves or lockers above the berth.

Legend 34

Chart table

To starboard by the companionway, the chart table is small (0.75m x 0.54m ) and on Quetzal the corner drops away to allow access to the quarterberth. Instrument space is good, though, and there’s useful stowage in the dedicated nav seat.

The galley is tightly L-shaped with room for a cooker and oven, although having two full-size sinks means there’s no worktop space. Guy has overcome this brilliantly by building a fold-over tabletop on the bulkhead. While there are lockers behind for crockery and a few other things, most food will have to be stored in the saloon lockers. Guy is also converting the aft return of the saloon settee into a top- loading fridge compartment.

Maintenance The engine is not the easiest to access, although there are side panels in the cockpit locker and under the quarterberth. The top step lifts up for checking and the whole front can be removed for servicing.

Legend 34

OUR VERDICT ON THE BOAT

What’s she like to sail? The Legend 34 is typical of a lot of IOR-styled boats of the 1970s, but I love the way these classics sail. She’s heavy, yes, but her lines are sleek and her keel not too long. She feels positive, steady and safe under sail, with a reassuring motion in big seas. Her deep-vee bow parts the waves without a hint of slapping and her generous keel keeps her tracking on rails.

Fast for her day, the Legend still has the ability to surprise – her displacement giving good momentum to punch through waves. Although she’s reasonably stiff, her high-aspect main means you need to use her mainsheet track to spill the gusts. She could also do with a decent kicker or flattening reef in strong winds.

Her powerful genoa needs reefing first – we put a roll in when the wind started to blow 20 knots or so over the deck, which isn’t unreasonable. This balanced her out and took some of the weather helm away. In reality she prefers to be reefed at 16 knots true for comfort, although under full sail she coped admirably when we set off out of Portland Harbour in a strong easterly.

What’s she like in port and at anchor? If you like cosy, snug interiors together with a sparse but practical layout, this boat should appeal although, dare I say it, she won’t be to everyone’s taste. The toilet and washing facilities are just one level above utilitarian (functional might be the word), so you might be tempted to stop over in a marina if/when you have company unless they share your simple requirements. Saying that, the forward cabin is the pick of berths, the others are a half- decent size, the saloon double measures 1.90m x 1.10m (6ft 3in x 3ft 7in), and the quarterberth 2.0m x 0.75m (6ft 6in x 2ft 6in).

The cooker would cope with a meal for six hungry sailors, but you’d need to have an extended worktop, or make sink and cooker covers for food preparation. I’d also be tempted to lose one sink and have that as a fridge, rather than disturb seated guests every time they want another cold beer.

Unlike on many modern yachts there is plenty of stowage space – it’s just not all that user-friendly. The saloon lockers are excellent and quite deep, but there’s nowhere for clothes other than under the bunks.

Would she suit you and your crew? If you like a sturdily-built and classically shaped yacht that looks downright pretty from most angles, then the Legend might be for you. While the design is quite dated, I believe there’s still a place for these delightful boats and I’d certainly be more than happy to chance a well-maintained example over a long ocean passage.

In performance terms she’s not going to win races around the cans any more, but she’ll log some impressive passage times when it blows and your crew will at least be able to sleep, eat and ablute off watch without fear of being bruised from head to toe.

The trick with a boat of this age is to find one that you have to persuade the owner to part with. If he or she is reluctant to sell, or wants to know your life history, then there’s a fair chance she’s been looked after and kept in tip-top condition. Be prepared to keep spending money, though – boats of this era need regular attention and updating to keep them seaworthy.

Giga Yacht LEGEND Charter Brief: MY LEGEND (77.4m/253.9'), previously Giant I, is an absolutely amazing luxury motor yacht undergoing one of a kind conversion into a full-displacement ice-breaking ship. During 2015 and early 2016, Verkerk Yachting Projects rebuilt this unique ice breaking yacht extensively in joint collaboration with Icon Yachts from Holland and Diana Yacht Design as refit naval and exterior design architects and with Legend Beheer B.V. Interior arrangement and design. As a result this go anywhere expedition super yacht will be the one and only A1 ice class Lloyds Polar annotation passenger ship with full SOLAS certifications and MCA coding. Built of out High Grade A Steel and with superstructure out of Marine Grade Aluminium Alloy and carrying up to two helicopters and a three man submarine, she is indeed a special super yacht. Her super yacht crew will be offering private yacht charters in remote areas of the planet Earth, most of the time around Greenland, Northern Europe, South Atlantic and Antarctica

Tip: MY LEGEND is simply a very unique go anywhere expedition giga yacht. There are no words to define her other than one and only A1 class ice-breaking super yacht with helicopters, submarine, snow mobiles and on request an expert team of explorers on board.

The vast table sits 26 people and will be also used for excursion briefings before heading to nearby islands or whale watching. Modern furniture blends in nicely with the craftsmanship of the wooden inlays of the table. A big Jacuzzi lets you gaze into the starts while relaxing calm after an adventurous day.

Interior Saloon The saloon area of this icebreaking yacht provides cosiness and comfort when travelling to the most far flung corners of the world. Soft fabrics and warm colours contract with the tough weather outside when cruising the arctic. Cream coloured carpets and ceilings contract well with the soft water tones. This provides for an airy and relaxing atmosphere.   The staterooms’ convenient close proximity to the wheelhouse allows the owner to be quickly involved 9in any major navigational decisions on the bridge should he wish to do so. The layout of the master cabin is spacious but its subdivisions in different zones such as office and lounge creates also a seaworthy and safe environment when the going gets rough. You are always closer to grab a handhold.

U-boat Worx C-Explorer 3 Sumbarine Legend is one of only but a few yachts worldwide equipped with a three-seater submarine capable to dive up to 300m (985ft) deep below the surface. Imagine how you venture to places never seen by mankind before! Stringent regular classification surveys by DNV GL and a commercially trained and certified submarine operator ensures the safe operation of this high tech equipment.

Helicopter Legend is not only an icebreaking superyacht and as such equipped to bring luxury and enjoyment for its guests to the remote areas of this world. The Eurocopter EC135 takes you well up into the clouds and lets you explore further the remote coats we take you to. On some occasions, we will even have a secondary light helicopter on board. 8 Yacht Clubs and Marinas in the Philippines to Moor Your Boat In

Yacht Clubs and Marinas

FoodfindsAsia.com | 8 Yacht Clubs and Marinas in the Philippines to Moor Your Boat In | Filipinos’ history as a maritime people date back to prehistoric times. In fact, the Philippines’ basic sociopolitical unit today, the barangay, traces its etymological origins to the balangay , the ancient outrigger boats that were used by precolonial Filipino communities to explore and conquer islands this side of the Pacific. As a people belonging to a seafaring culture, it’s no wonder that modern Filipinos are taking a retrospective look at their glorious past as Austronesian mariners and are developing a renewed love for the ocean and marinas as present-day yachtsmen.

Today, Philippine marinas look to accommodate more and more yachts and other pleasure watercrafts as the years go by. In 2017, an ASEAN Briefing op-ed piece named the Philippines as a country with high potential in yacht industry growth. The natural beauty of the Philippine islands and its fantastic bays, combined with a growing interest in leisurely sea travel, can explain the spike in yachting activities throughout the country.

Are you part of the demographic that’s become enamored of the yachting lifestyle? Do you want to know where in the country you can berth your watercraft? Leading sailboat and motorboat authority Europa Yachts is happy to enter the conversation, and recommends the following locations for discovering the Philippines through yachting. Here is a short list of clubs and marinas in the country, organized by island region.

Manila Yacht Club and Marina, Manila, Metro Manila

Established in 1927, the Manila Yacht Club and Marina is one of the oldest yacht clubs in all of Asia, and is nestled in the scenic Manila Bay. It is also near other well-known landmarks in the city, such as the Cultural Center of the Philippines (CCP), the headquarters of the Philippine Navy, and the US Embassy. Facilities in the marina include a launching ramp and a fueling center, and the club itself is host to a restaurant and gorgeous function rooms. The Manila Yacht Club only welcomes visitors who arrive by boat, and it charges an initial security deposit of USD 750 upon arrival. Club membership is mandatory for medium and long-term mooring of boats.

Subic Bay Yacht Club, Zambales

The Subic Bay Yacht Club, which was founded in 1998, upholds itself as the country’s premier yacht club. It operates in the deepest bay in the country, and can host vessels well beyond 50 meters in length. Already benefitting from the innate beauty of the Zambales mountains surrounding it, the club hosts a number of other attractions, including its luxury accommodations, swimming pools, and its own movie theater, bowling alley, and nightclub. Those who venture outside of the club’s premises can also shop for well-priced imported goods at the Subic Freeport Zone, engage in water sports , or sign up for diving excursions.

Punta Fuego Yacht Club, Batangas

Peaceful Punta Fuego is a mecca for those who love the sport of sailing. As per its official website, the Punta Fuego Yacht Club aims to serve “a dynamic and vibrant community of boat enthusiasts and yacht owners.” This it does by playing host to a diverse population of watercrafts, from large catamarans and mono-hull yachts to small boats. Non-members of the club may use the berths for up to 3 weeks, and can refuel at the marina’s fueling station. The yacht club offers other amenities such as locker rooms, shower rooms, Internet facilities, a chart room, and a restaurant called Barracuda Bar, which serves delicious fares. Outside of the yachting crowd, Punta Fuego Yacht Club also caters to those wishing to celebrate weddings, conferences, and corporate events in their opulent quarters.

Puerto Galera Yacht Club, Oriental Mindoro

Further south, yachtsmen may moor at the Puerto Galera Yacht Club in Oriental Mindoro, an island location that’s home to tourist attractions like the Sabang Wreck dive site, lively beachfront resorts, and the Malasimbo Music Festival. Puerto Galera Yacht Club has been in operation for almost thirty years and lends services such as refueling provisions and yacht repairs from its marina. Boat owners also enjoy optimal convenience if mooring here, as they can also shop for spare parts in the nearby Batangas port.

Busuanga Yacht Club, Puerta del Sol Bay Marina, Palawan

Beautiful Palawan is a bucket-list destination for many, especially those who dream of cruising its crystalline waters. Accommodating the yachting community in this island province is the Busuanga Yacht Club, which promises secure mooring amidst breathtaking white-sand beaches. Here, each vessel will benefit from a typhoon-safe harbor, easy refueling, and direct access to transportation hubs like the New Busuanga Airport. Adjoining this marina is the Puerta del Sol Bay Resort, which offers luxurious accommodations to visitors. When not atop the deck of a boat, travelers can also explore the lagoons and freshwater lakes of Coron, go shipwreck diving, or relax in the hot springs of Maquinit.

Iloilo Sailing Club, Arevelo, Iloilo City, Iloilo

Iloilo Province is home to some of the country’s most beautiful old-world architecture, a flourishing ecotourism industry, and delectably fresh seafood cuisine. What will round off an unforgettable visit to Iloilo, however, is an excursion to the Iloilo Sailing Club on a leisure watercraft. The club accepts visitors and encourages membership in the case of medium and long-stay mooring. It also hosts a number of amenities and activities, including a dinghy storage, a beach bar and restaurant, and classes for those who want to learn about sailing. In recent months, the Iloilo Sailing Club has also been a convenient meet-up point for big maritime events, such as the Iloilo-Guimaras Paraw Regatta and the Seafarers’ Job Fair.

Cebu Yacht Club, Mactan Island, Cebu

The historic Mactan Island in Cebu was the site of Portuguese explorer Ferdinand Magellan’s arrival in the Philippines. Now known as a commercial hub that hosts a prolific furniture and musical instruments industries, Mactan is also the location of the Cebu Yacht Club, an institution that is beloved by the locals. Aside from being an ideal spot to restock on much-needed fuel and supplies, the Cebu Yacht Club is also a trusted club to commission for boat repairs. There’s a good vibe in this club for everybody, as it sports both luxury accommodations and a waterfront strip of restaurants that laid-back diners can frequent. MINDANAO

Holiday Oceanview Marina, Samal Island, Davao del Norte

The Holiday Oceanview Marina is a major attraction of Samal Island in Davao del Norte Province, one that welcomes Filipino and foreign yachtsmen alike to moor within its premises. The space is quite roomy, in fact, with 56 berths that can fit vessels up to 15 meters in length. The club also has a boat ramp that can accommodate boats up to 18 meters in length. The well-guarded and weather-safe marina is a gateway to some of Mindanao’s finest attractions, such as the Pearl Farm, Hagimit Falls, and Giant Clam Sanctuary.

There’s no better way to discover the Philippines from end to end than getting onboard a seaworthy vessel and going on a long cruise, with stops in some of the most beautiful places in the country. Find a safe harbor in any of these major clubs and marinas, and participate in the renaissance of sailing in the Philippines.
