Sardinia luxury yacht charter

Sardinia’s scalloped bays, shimmering sands and dramatic coastline have long been the playground of screen starlets, royalty, first families and the yachting elite. With some of the most exclusive harbours, hotels and restaurants in the western Mediterranean, a luxury yacht charter around the Italian island of Sardinia seamlessly combines sun-soaked glamour with timeless elegance and natural beauty. A Tyrrhenian Sea yacht charter around this island can happily balance partying in hotspots like Porto Cervo on the Costa Smeralda with an escape to secluded islands and jaw-dropping marine parks in places such as the Maddalena archipelago.

Sardinia yacht season and weather

Sardinia is hot and dry from May to October with the island enjoying an average of 300 days of sunshine a year. Peak charter months are July and August, though June is also an excellent time to charter. August is particularly busy as most Italians take their holidays during this month.

Most rain falls between October and February, giving much of Sardinia a lush and verdant character. Visitors may well experience balmy summer days in March and April, though evenings will be cool during this time of year. The prevailing wind is north westerly, which can be particularly significant on the Strait of Bonifacio at the north of the island.

Sardinia superyacht charter itineraries

Historic Cagliari crowns Sardinia’s southern edge, and a litter of pretty coves and tiny villages then await. With vineyards inland and towns steeped in history, it is a region rich in cultural and gastronomic offerings. Yachts up to 55 metres LOA can drop anchor at Marina di Cagliari.

To the north, the superyacht haven of Porto Cervo is the central hub for the yachting elite that descend on Sardinia’s glittering Costa Smeralda each summer. Home to some of Europe’s most expensive residences and exclusive resorts, including the iconic Cala di Volpe hotel, Porto Cervo pulsates during the summer season and its bars and restaurants promise a great night ashore.

The Yacht Club Costa Smeralda is based in Porto Cervo and organises a packed yacht racing season throughout the summer. Highlights of the Mediterranean cruising calendar in Sardinia include the Giorgio Armani Superyacht Regatta, the Loro Piana Superyacht Regatta, the Maxi Rolex Cup and Rolex Swan Cup – all lively events for sailing enthusiasts in Porto Cervo to get involved with. Yachts up to 120 metres can berth at the IGY marina in Port Cervo.

South of Porto Cervo, the resort village of Porto Rotondo’s turquoise waters, pristine beaches and charming piazzas will prove irresistible, and the port here has 25 berths for megayachts. Cruise 20 nautical miles and dock at Marina di Olbia (for yachts up to 80 metres) to discover the city’s café-lined squares. Further south explore the caves near Cala Luna, where the peaks of Gennargentu National Park provide a dramatic backdrop and the snorkelling is excellent. Nearby Cala Goloritzé is another natural wonder.

From the northern coast of the main island cruise about 10 nautical miles offshore toward the spectacular archipelago of La Maddalena. While away long, languid sunny days around Caprera, Spargi, Santo Stefano, Santa Maria, Budelli and Razzoli, and discover some of Sardinia’s best beaches and the island’s breathtaking lagoons. On Isola Maddalena, Cala Gavetta marina can host yachts up to 60 metres LOA, as can the marina of the Hotel Excelsior. On Capera, Porto Palma can accommodate yachts up to 40 metres.

Some luxury yacht charters will combine the magic of Sardinia with French-held Corsica – the islands lie in a north to south run, with Corsica sitting off Sardinia’s northerly tip.

On Corsica , visit the historic capital of Porto-Vecchio, discover the UNESCO wonders of the Lavezzi islands and marvel at the houses perched atop the windswept bluffs in Bonifacio before cruising south to the majestic La Maddelena archipelago.

Arrival Information Details

Advanced reservations are strongly recommended at Marina di Porto Cervo.  Berthing is not guaranteed without a confirmed reservation.  We ask that you provide advanced notice, when feasible, of your approximate arrival time so we can be fully prepared for your arrival and minimize any inconvenience to you.  Customs must be provided with 72 hours advanced notice to report a firm arrival location and estimated time of arrival.

Please Note: Captains and his/her assignee must check-in/check-out with the marina office for each stay unless otherwise arranged with marina management.

Upon approach to the marina lagoon, please hail the marina on VHF Channel 16.  At that time a slip assignment will be provided as well as directions to the slip.  Dock attendants will guide you in and assist you with docking.  Once comfortably settled, we ask that you visit our marina office to check-in.  The staff will quickly register you and answer any questions.

Upon departure, we request you contact the marina office 1-2 hours prior to departure to ensure all items are in order. Please visit the marina office in order to obtain the balance of the account which must be paid prior to departure.  A receipt can be provided at the marina office or emailed upon request to the email address provided at the time of check-in.  Once all items are in order, please hail the marina office on VHF Channel 16 if you would like assistance with disconnection and lines.

Early Check-In / Late Check-Out

If a slip is occupied after 10:30 am on the day of your scheduled departure, an additional night’s dockage will be charged to your account.

We will do our absolute best to accommodate your requests whenever possible.  In most cases, if your slip is available prior to 4:30 pm on the day of your arrival, or after 10:30 am on the day of your departure, we will allow you to remain in the slip at no additional charge.  Prior arrangements must be made with the marina office for early arrival or delayed departure in order to avoid unnecessary charges.

Temporary Slips

In the event an early check-in and/or late check-out is unable to be accommodated in your current slip, we will try to accommodate by making another slip available until such time your slip is available or you are ready to depart the marina.

In the event a temporary slip is made available to you, and you do not relocate the vessel, the marina reserves the right to charge you two times (2x’s) the original daily rate for each night you occupy the temporary slip.

This is necessary as the Marina di Porto Cervo operates at full occupancy at times and failure to relocate the vessel could negatively affect other guests.

Cancellation Policy

Please note:  Cancellation policies are subject to change. Please refer to your reservation confirmation or contact the marina office direct for confirmation of cancellation policy. Cancellation requests must be submitted directly to the marina. Any cancellation requests received through the IGY Marinas website are not considered proper cancellation.

Marina di Porto Cervo Marina Rules

To make your stay with us more enjoyable, the following set of guidelines should be followed. These are merely suggested rules of etiquette and regulations to make the Marina and its facilities more enjoyable for all customers.

  • Do not leave garbage on the docks or common areas to be picked up.  Garbage should be bagged and tied and then properly placed in designated receptacles, or be placed in the garbage truck, not loosely scattered or abandoned.
  • Oils and fuels should be disposed of properly and not in Marina trash cans.  Please ask for assistance when disposing of oils, fuels, or chemicals. Your concern for the environment helps.
  • Try not to introduce any effluents into the Marina lagoon.  Use holding tanks if possible.
  • Do not attempt to turn on your own water and electricity. Please have a dock attendant provide the service.  Using pliers or screwdrivers will damage the equipment and you will be charged.  It is suggested that you read meters (if applicable) along with our dock attendant to ensure accuracy.
  • Anyone caught taking water from another yacht’s tap shall be responsible for the entire water cost of the metered yacht. Please use your own water.
  • Keep power cords and water hoses in a neat and orderly fashion so that no one will trip in the dark or while carrying objects.
  • Please wash sails on lawn areas where water outlets and drying spaces are available, or do it aboard your yacht.
  • When marking anchor chains with paint, use paper or cardboard beneath your chain to keep wet paint off the docks and other customers’ shoes.
  • When cleaning dinghies, make sure you rinse debris and growth off of the docks when finished.
  • Lock the vessel when leaving it unattended.
  • Lock your dinghies and outboard at night.
  • Try to keep excessive noise down after 10:00 pm.
  • Do not utilize power sanders or grinders while completing minor vessel repairs.
  • Barbecue and cooking on the docks is prohibited.  Barbecue and cooking should be done on board in suitable equipment and self contained.  Any other way is dangerous and frowned upon.  Kindly clean up after yourself when finished. Charcoal ash and debris are not to be disposed of into the lagoon.
  • If bright deck lights or spot lights are to be used at night, avoid pointing them at nearby boats, especially down or into their cabins.
  • Pets need to be kept on a leash or in an acceptable carrying case. Please be sure to clean up after your pets. Owners will be responsible for any damages caused by unattended pets.

Your cooperation is greatly appreciated.

From the Nuragic settlers that lived in Sardinia in the Bronze Age and archeological site of Tharros which showcases the presence of the Phoenicia, Punic and Roman civilisations, to the glorious amphitheaters and museums in Cagliari, Sardinia abounds in historical artifacts, creating a unique element to your luxury yacht charter , alongside the jet-set havens the island is famous for.

As one of the most popular destinations for yacht charters in the West Mediterranean, there should be plenty to choose from when it comes to crewed yachts for charter in Sardinia. If you’re unsure about whether you want to book a motor yacht or a sailing yacht for your luxury getaway, there are a few things you should consider first.

Sailing Yacht Charters in Sardinia

Sailing yachts moored in a marina in Sardinia, Italy

The sailing conditions in Sardinia promise some of the finest in the world, with renowned sailing superyacht regattas taking place each year, including the celebrated Loro Piana Regatta which runs annually at the end of May.

The winds found along the narrow passage of the Bonifacio strait, one of the largest Natural marine reserves in the Mediterranean , promise exhilarating racing conditions where you can unleash the power of the sails and leave the engine gears in neutral. Experience sailing at its finest, where the wind is the master and the only sounds are the billowing sails and the rush of water against the hull. Experience the thrill as your sailing yacht carves through the waves against a backdrop of towering chalk cliffs and diamond-speckled seas.

There are plenty of easy anchorage spots ideal for sailing yachts, as well as numerous marinas offering plentiful overnight slips.

With so many options available, there’s something to suit every type of budget. For convenience we have listed the average prices for motor yacht and sailing yacht charters in Sardinia below;

Charter guest snorkeling in clear waters

The optimal times for yacht charters in Sardina’s turquoise-clear waters are the shoulder months of May/June and September/October. During this time, you can still enjoy beautiful warm weather, with the later months offering the warmest swimming temperatures. Sardinia’s peak season is July and August, so expect both higher charter fees and packed marinas in these months.

Colorful houses in Porto Cervo in Sardinia, Italy

Most Sardinia yacht charters begin in the popular superyacht marina of Porto Cervo in the north west of the island or nearby Porto Rotondo, a slightly quieter marina compared to its illustrious neighbor. After a short stay here, popular charter itineraries tend to make a beeline north to the beautiful Maddalena Islands where the yacht can spend a day or two in a pretty sheltered anchorage while you and your guests take to the Carribean-blue waters for a spot of diving and snorkeling.

From here, the world’s your oyster. Sardinia has numerous must-see destinations and you will be hard-pushed to fit them all in. From the lush archipelagos of the north to the wild, untamed beaches found in the south west of the island, and from the glamorous superyacht havens on the north east coast where you can indulge your every whim to the rich historical treasures found in the south, you’ll be spoiled for choice.

Another popular option is to set off from the Amalfi Coast on Italy’s mainland or Corsica in the north and then cruise down through the Bonifacio Strait. It’s simple enough to begin your superyacht vacation in a neighboring country before heading to Sardinia. For more advice please speak to your yacht charter broker .

Sample itineraries

Most yacht charters tend to finish in Porto Cervo or Porto Rotondo. As well as the vibrant superyacht lifestyle, these places also offer their own bevy of beautiful beaches and scenic beauty, making these the perfect spots to end your memorable Sardina luxury yacht charter. Alternatively, for longer charters you can finish up in one of the neighboring destinations mentioned above. Speak with your yacht charter broker who can advise you further.

Porto Cervo marina in Sardinia, Italy

  • Marina di Porto Cervo - A well-protected marina with its renowned eponymous village offering a prime superyacht hub replete with numerous amenities and attractions. This marina is home to an impressive 700 slips and can accommodate yachts up to 100 meters in length
  • Marina di Olbia - Affording beautiful views of the Golf of Olbia, this charming sheltered marina located on Sardinia’s north-west coast offers plentiful cafes and restaurants all within a short walk from the port. With 270 slips, the marina can accommodate yachts up to 80 meters LOA.
  • Marina di Porto Rotondo - Also located in Olbia, this round-shaped marina enjoys an impeccable reputation amongst its international Jet Set clientele, with bespoke VIP services and luxury hotels adding to the allure. Porto Rotondo can host yachts up to 80 meters in length and has 652 yacht slips available.
  • Portus Karalis Cagliari - Only a champagne cork’s pop away from the Sardinian capital’s town center, this marina is ideal for those looking to explore the region’s historic treasures, glorious beaches and hidden gems. Close to all major transport links, it offers 140 slips for yachts up to 100 meters in length.
  • Porto di Alghero - located in the beautiful province of Sassari, this destination is renowned for its beautiful emerald waters and secluded beaches making it a prime stop-off for those looking for an idyllic retreat away from the main hubs. This marina can accommodate 380 yachts with slips available for vessels up to 50 meters LOA.
  • Cala Luna - A beautiful curve of sand with magical caves and astonishing clear blue waters abound in this paradisiacal setting. It does get busy in the peak summer months, but after 7pm all the crowds depart, leaving a stunning anchorage to park the yacht and watch the setting sun, cocktail in hand.
  • Passagio della Pelosa - Often likened to a lagoon, this beautiful sheltered cove is considered by some as one of the best anchorages in the Mediterranean, where charterers will be dazzled by the Caribbean-blue waters reflecting the sandy seabed below. This anchorage is an ideal jumping off point to the protected marine reserve of Stintino, with convenient restaurants and shops located nearby in the village and marina.
  • Porto Liscia - A pretty peninsula of golden sand beach with cobalt-blue waters and scenic views. The anchorage is well protected and is a popular hangout for superyachts, which means it can get busy.
  • Spiaggia di Campulongu - Situated on Sardinia’s south coast, a short hop from Cagliari, this anchorage offers a beautiful calm bay with lots of space and clear waters, perfect for swimming and snorkeling from the back of the yacht. There is a convenient marina close by with all the usual amenities, as well as a short walk into town.

With its A-lister appeal, rich cultural history and bevy of world-class beaches, Sardinia is one of the most popular destinations in the Mediterranean. Therefore, we advise you to book your yacht charter well in advance of your trip to secure your perfect yacht on your preferred dates. If you leave it too late, the selection of yachts at your disposal will be reduced and you may not be able to explore the destinations you have your heart set on. Plus, finding dates when everyone in your charter party is available can be tricky; the longer you leave it, the more challenging it will be.

High cliffs of Mediterranean coast,

Your yacht charter broker will also need plenty of time to tailor an itinerary to suit you, and enough time to book ahead for the nights you wish to spend in marinas. We recommend booking up to 3 months in advance to give your broker the optimum time to organize everything down to the last detail.

Sardinia Yacht Charter Q&A

Some important things to consider before booking your yacht;

  • Marinas tend to get quite busy during peak summer months, so you need to consider that when deciding on what night's you wish to spend in a slip. Ideally, find a yacht that is comfortable with ample leisure and entertainment facilities onboard.
  • Mistrals are quite common during the shoulder months of May and October, so check with your charter broker about the best anchorages and itineraries if you intend on traveling during these months.
  • You should also be aware that certain zones in Sardinia's waters are restricted to protect the sea grass, which may impact on where you anchor the yacht. This is something you can discuss with your yacht broker, or yacht captain when deciding on your itinerary.

Due to its popularity during the Mediterranean Season, there should be a wide selection of yachts to choose from, so there is sure to be something that suits both you and your budget.

Why not visit our yacht charter fleet page for a comprehensive look at all yachts available for charter around Sardinia .

Alternatively, you can reach out to your preferred yacht broker , who will be sure to help you find your perfect yacht and itinerary around the dates that suit both you and your guests.

The optimum time for yacht charters in Sardinia is between June and September, with average temperatures in the mid to high 20s, clear blue seas and endless days of glorious sunshine.

You should note that Sardinia's peak season is in July and August, so expect both higher charter fees and crowded marinas during these months.

Most Sardinia yacht charters begin in the glamorous superyacht marina of Porto Cervo in the north west of the island, with popular charter itineraries including the breathtaking Maddalena archipelago, the pretty sheltered anchorages and charming villages found along Sardinia's east coast  and the island's capital Cagliari, awash with historical treasures and rich cultural heritage.

The island is also renowned for its protected marine reserves and beautiful clear waters where snorkeling and diving are the favorite activities for yacht charters. where the yacht can spend a day or two in a pretty sheltered anchorage while you and your guests take to the Carribean-blue waters for a spot of diving and snorkeling.

Another option is to begin your yacht charter on Italy's west coast only a short hop across the Tyrrhenian Sea. Alternatively, charters can begin on the spellbindingly rugged island of Croatia in the north, separated only by a narrow strait famed for its sailing.

Once you have decided on your perfect yacht, your yacht broker will then draw up the necessary contract; a legally binding agreement between you and the owner of the yacht. At this point, based on the type of contract, you will be required to pay 50% of the cost of the yacht up front, with an additional 25-30% of this base rate to cover additional expenses you and your guests are expected to incur whilst on charter.

For more information about the costs of chartering a yacht, please read our helpful guide: Yacht Charter Costs Explained , which describes the fee structure in more detail.

Yachting in Sardinia is aimed at tourists who want to live a sustainable travel experience, aware of preserving the terrestrial and marine environment. It is, in fact, the alternative to the overbuilding that increasingly covers our coasts, also allowing us to reach those hidden corners of the coast, not reachable by land, but of great charm, while at the same time preserving their value. In 2018, after twenty years of activity in the charter sector, having had the vision of what could have been the growth prospects of the Eco-sustainable Nautical Tourism sector, the company decided to change gear and starting from the choice of a certifying body expert in the tourist accommodation sector (and not nautical) such as CSQA, revolutionizing its processes in an integral way and completely redesigning the operational model of the activity. It is also the first Nautical Hotel accommodation facility in the world to also have ISO 9001 certification.

The company today offers its customers the opportunity to find the right offer for their holiday by directly visiting the Yachting in Sardinia website where 8 different offers are available every day, valid only for 24 hours, for a fleet of boats that are completely similar. and throughout to floating and completely eco-sustainable housing units, equipped with all comforts and divided into categories (exclusive, comfort and standard). The customer on board receives 24-hour assistance, also thanks to the SeaTutor monitoring system, and can count on a dedicated Service Operator, ready to respond to any needs of the guest crew, giving the customer the opportunity to experience the sea in total safety.

Group Y has been investing for years in the technical set-up of its boats: from the massive use of photovoltaics, to the elimination of endothermic generators, from the use of double alternators combined with automotive-derived battery packs, to the use of watermakers, from use of purifiers, up to the revolutionary "zero" impact underwater protective coating: the SeaProtector, which replaces traditional antifouling, not only improving the performance of the hull by reducing fuel consumption, but, being totally free of biocides toxic, avoid releasing any type of harmful substance into the water.

Motor yacht charter vs sailing yacht charters in Sardinia

Choosing between a crewed motor yacht and a sailing yacht for your Sardinia adventure depends on your preferences, budget, and the experience you’re seeking.

Motor yachts offer several advantages that appeal to many travellers. They provide greater speed and agility, allowing you to cover more distance along Sardinia’s coastline in less time. With their luxurious amenities, spacious interiors, and onboard chefs, motor yachts offer unparalleled comfort and indulgence. Their stability in choppy waters and ease of handling make them suitable for guests who prioritize a smooth sailing experience or have limited sailing experience.

On the other hand, sailing yachts offer a more authentic and serene sailing experience. With their reliance on wind power rather than engines, sailing yachts provide a quieter and more intimate atmosphere, perfect for relaxation and enjoying the natural beauty of Sardinia’s coastline. They evoke a sense of nostalgia and romance with their classic designs and billowing sails, appealing to travelers seeking an authentic maritime adventure. Additionally, eco-conscious travellers often prefer sailing vessels due to their lower environmental impact and reliance on renewable energy.

Ultimately, choosing a motor yacht or a sailing yacht for your Sardinia adventure depends on your preferences and desired level of comfort. Both options offer their own unique advantages and can provide an unforgettable journey along the breathtaking coastline of Sardinia.

Sardinia is an island in the Tyrrhenian Sea, a part of the Mediterranean Sea, southwest of the Italian Peninsula and just south of the French island of Corsica. It is an autonomous region of Italy and boasts over 1,850 kilometers (1,150 miles) of coastline, featuring stunning beaches, crystal-clear waters, and dramatic cliffs. Sardinia is surrounded by smaller islands and archipelagos, such as the Maddalena Archipelago to the northeast, offering additional exploration and discovery opportunities on your own private yacht charter. These islands often have secluded beaches, hidden caves, and charming villages to explore.

Sardinia’s coastline boasts miles of superlative beaches and secret grottos only accessible by boat. Porto Cervo is at the region’s main center, home to Costa Smeralda. This area has become increasingly desirable for luxury yacht charters because of its remote location and exclusive atmosphere. South of Porto Cervo, you will find forested mountains, medieval villages, and stunning seas. Another recommended site is La Maddalena National Park, a marine reserve that offers opportunities for secluded anchorages and overnight stays. Spotted with seven main islands and many islets, La Maddalena offers crystal-clear waters for an afternoon snorkel and access to the beautiful pink sand beach named Pink of Budelli. Sardinia’s coastal cuisine differs from inland; the seafood base and pasta dishes pay homage to the sea and further contribute to the laidback yet luxurious atmosphere of the island.

When is the best time to go on a Sardinia yacht charter?

The best time to hop on a yacht and explore Sardinia is usually in the summer, from June to September. During this time, the weather is warm and sunny, perfect for soaking up the sun and diving into the crystal-clear waters. Remember that summer is popular with yacht charter guests and tourists, so planning ahead and booking early is advisable. Spring (April to May) and autumn (October to November) are great options for Charter guests who prefer fewer crowds. You’ll still get lovely weather and plenty of chances to enjoy the island’s beauty without the hustle and bustle of peak season. So, whether you’re aiming for exciting summer adventures or a more relaxed experience, there’s a perfect time for a Sardinia yacht adventure to fit your preferences.

Can I visit other destinations on a Sardinia yacht charter?

Yes, absolutely! One of the great advantages of chartering a yacht in Sardinia is the opportunity to explore other destinations in the Mediterranean. Sardinia’s strategic location in the heart of the Mediterranean Sea makes it an excellent starting point for cruising to nearby islands, coastal towns, and other popular destinations.

The Amalfi Coast

Sail along the west coast of Italy to visit the breathtaking Amalfi Coast , known for its dramatic cliffs, colorful villages, and Mediterranean charm. Explore the picturesque towns of Positano, Amalfi, and Ravello, and enjoy the stunning views of the coastline from the deck of your yacht.

Sardinia Yachting Guide 2021 / 2022

Sardinia captivates with endearing eccentricities shores and its hinterland. Here drive thrill puzzles and four thousand sheep rule the roads. Sardinia has some of the most beautiful beaches not only in Italy but in the whole West Mediterranean. Yes, the sand is really white, and the sea of the bluest blue. Imagine sailing into the cluster of granite islands of La Maddalena ; or dropping anchor in Costa Smeralda bays, where supermodels and celebrities frolic in waters; playing on the coves of the Golfo di Orosei, where cliffs ensure seclusion. Whether you are walking barefoot across the dunes on the Costa Verde or lounging on the silky smooth bays of the Costa del Sud, unroll your beach towel and you will never need to leave.

Whether you go slow or fast, select country or coast, Sardinia is one of Europe’s last great island adventures. Hike through the lush interior to Tiscali’s nuraghic ruins’ twilight. Walk the coastal route that is vertiginous to the bay of Cala Luna, where climbers spider the cliffs up. Or ramble through holm oak forests to the mighty boulder-strewn canyon of Gola Su Gorropu. The sea’s allure is irresistible to windsurfers on the north shore, while sailors wax lyrical about shipwrecks off Cagliari’s coast, the Nereo Cave and Nora’s submerged Roman ruins.

Sardinia, your next sailing destination

You’re searching for a brilliant Italian break without stress and the noise of the mainland. Sardinia has some of the most seductive beaches of the Mediterranean , yet inside tootling distance of the evening ritual of the passeggiata, pubs that are agreeable, and some great restaurants.

Mention Sardinia and most people think of the Emerald Coast ‘s glitz but there’s plenty more. The Costa Smeralda is a very small strip of coast studded with resorts beaches and Beverly Hills-type stores, but if swish ain’t your thing you discover acres of swimming places to die for on each coast without the superstar pretensions.

When you have had your fill of these, there is plenty more to distract you: the magnificent rugged landscape of the granite inside, the fabulous seafood, and, for history buffs, the strange and evocative remnants of Sardinia’s ancient Nuraghic culture, not to mention a scattering of Carthaginian and Roman ruins, Pisan churches and Spanish Baroque.

When is the best period for sailing Sardinia?

There’s one golden rule: August, avoid. I know, i know, everyone has summer holidays in August but if you want to truly enjoy Sardinia, remember that August is the most crowded month of the year. That is when the whole of Italy with family sinks in tow booking all available lodging up, flooding the shores and storms the island. Prices go up too, and it can be excruciatingly hot. Nearly any other time is fine, with May/June seeing the island at its best, with the clearest skies, while a post-blitz serenity descends on the island in September, once the crowds have departed and the sea is at its warmest. The depths of winter can observe resorts looking a bit drab and forlorn, however, and some places are closed until Easter.

The top destinations for Sardinia cruise

  • Emerald Coast , North Sardinia
  • Porto Cervo and Porto Rotondo
  • La Maddalena
  • Bonifacio Strait
  • Cagliari and Villasimius
  • Santa Teresa di Gallura
  • Carloforte and Sant’Antioco

If you’re a first-time sailor to Sardinia, then have a look at the northern part first, and later you can explore the south as well. Here is our proposal for a route in the north, but choose your starting point depending on where you come from.

Start off your Sardinia sailing tour from the north-west and continue to the eastern coast. Alghero is a historical city with many Catalan influences, as it was under Catalan rule for quite a while in the past. The main sights include other sacral buildings and the Alghero Cathedral , the town walls, towers, and bastions.

If you have extra time onshore, visit the nearby Palmavera together with the remains of the nuraghe — megalithic building constructions from the ancient Nuraghe age (1500 BC).

Sailing north from Alghero you come to Capo Caccia, probably best known for several caves, both under and over water, the most famous being Neptune’s Grotto. Aside from stalagmites and impressive stalactites, the cave has a saltwater lake inside.

Further north lies the small town of Stintino, with its two impressive beaches: La Pelosa and La Pelosetta. Remember that swimming is allowed on three beaches on the island and docking is illegal for private boats.

The next stop on your yacht charter vacation could be Santa Teresa di Gallura, the northernmost port of Sardinia, famous for beautiful beaches with white sand and crystal clear water. One of them is the Rena Bianca beach, just north of the town.

Not far away is the town of Palau , bordering on the Emerald Coast of Sardinia. Its main feature is little bays and secluded beaches with rocky islands scattered in the water. The archipelago was proclaimed a national park in 1994 and is among the regions in Sardinia. It has beaches with clear blue waters and an almost feel.

You cannot leave Sardinia without seeing the Costa Smeralda and seeing what all the fuss is about. Sail to Porto Cervo , its center, developed by Aga Khan in the 60s. Although it visited by other people and celebrities and is quite exclusive, it is worth a trip, at least to see large luxury yachts.

End your route in Olbia, the island’s economic center. Visit the National Archeological Museum, the Fausto Noce Park, or the Riu Mulinu nuraghe, or explore the beaches a bit.

High season, costs and deals to charter a yacht in Sardinia

The cost of your charter, as the price of docking depends on the dimension of the boat you are renting and on the period of the year. The high season period for charter and holidays in Sardinia is from May to the end of October. The weather is mild and really warm from June to August. August, as written above, is the most crowded period of the year and everything is really expensive. We usually recommend enjoying a sailing charter in Sardinia in May, June, July, September, or October, which are the mid-season months, with excellent climate and weather conditions and the area is definitively not too crowded.

The best period to confirm your booking, i mean the most convenient part of year to book your charter, sign the contract and pay the first tranche is around 8 to 10 months before. It could look like a lot of time but actually, you will take advantage of the early booking discounts that usually are from 10% to 20% off the market price, together with excellent deals about extras. Moreover, the previous you confirm your yacht charter in Sardinia , the best yachts you will still find available. As you do not have to forget that boats in Sardegna , especially catamarans are fully booked within the beginning of the new year (usually maximum in February all the catamarans for July and August are gone).

Our recommendations are: – Enjoy your sailing holiday in Sardinia from May to October, if you can avoid August; – Book your charter in advance, to get special offers as early booking and long-period terms discounts;

A Guide to Sailing Around Sardinia

Known for its beautiful beaches and delightful cuisine, Sardinia is a modern-day sailors dream

Sardinia is all about the beach – all 200 of them. With a chartered yacht, you can swim in to tread Robinson Crusoe footprints at dawn. Or play Love Island at dusk with a sand-in-the-toes picnic of Sardinian cheese and sparkling rosé. The best news? Sardinia’s coastline is secluded. The island receives just 3.4 million tourists per year – for perspective, Mallorca , which is an eighth of the size, welcomes more than 10 million each year – which leaves those tiny islets, snorkel spots and secret anchorages just for you.

Discover the top spots around Italy’s coast by Culture Trip’s Sailing Trips.

What to see and do in Sardinia

The beaches of the Costa Smeralda – where these swooshes of sand range from Spiaggia del Principe to Spiaggia Banana – are among the finest beaches in the world. The best with a boat? Anchor off Cala Goloritzé. It’s an only-by-boat beach so breathtaking that it was declared an Italian National Monument.

For sailors, the Maddalena Archipelago is unrivalled. This icing sugar of seven major islands and a sprinkling of tiny islands is so breathtaking they’re protected by Unesco. Striped dolphins zip between islands and picnicking paddleboarders wave from shore. The only issue? Spending a day at anchor off every Maddalena island would take the entire summer.

Best mooring locations in Sardinia

Of the dozens of yacht harbours that ring Sardinia, friendly and flexible Marina di Portisco has it all. The enviable location offers direct access to the island’s best beaches, plus 600 berths and dozens of yachts to charter – not to mention pizzerias, bars and a bargain hotel with concessionary rates for sailors with early embarkation. Check their mooring offers online and call VHF 69 on entry.

Marina di Porto Cervo makes for a stellar yachting experience – even if you can only afford gelato. Throughout the summer, the harbour welcomes billions worth of superyachts every day. It’s okay to pretend one of them is yours – we won’t tell a soul. At the other end of the spectrum, oh-so-cute Marina di Portoscuso offers up to 25m (82ft) moorings and access to the southern lonely islands of Sardinia.

Where to eat and drink in Sardinia

Sardinia is an island bathed in sunshine – which means that crustaceans, figs and grapes become knockout seafood, fruity desserts and luscious wines. Food tours and vineyard eBike rides are popular – as are cheeses like casizolu , a grassy cow’s milk curd protected by the Slow Food movement. Or, try the lot at Nuraxi. The restaurant uses historic Sardinian ingredients like bottarga roe and island truffles to elevate line-caught tuna or culurgiones ravioli. Koki Beach offers parasols, cocktails and sand-in-the-toes servings of mozzarella burrata and tuna and walnut salad if you’re keen to dine alfresco on the beach.

Where to get groceries in Sardinia

Over 20 branches of the Sardinian convenience store, Dettorimarket, dot the Costa Smeralda coastline. Stock up on hand-made ravioli, wafer-thin carta musica bread and other island specialties. Find grand hypermarkets overflowing with hanging salami and local Ichnusa beer near Olbia Costa Smeralda airport.

Key annual sailing events in Sardinia

The ritzy Marina di Porto Cervo has a near monopoly on regattas. All are welcome to watch the starts of the landmark Maxi Yacht Rolex Cup – yes, it’s actually sponsored by Rolex. During the early September competition, a fleet of 30m (98ft)-plus sailing yachts vie for victory during a week-long regatta. In early June, the marina also hosts the Loro Piana Superyacht Regatta – with even more expensive racing yachts.

The Yacht Club Costa Smeralda’s superyacht season opens with the Loro Piana Superyacht Regatta

Climate and weather in Sardinia

Don’t fret about sunshine in Sardinia. From May through September, daytime temperatures seldom dip below 20°C (68°F) – with hotter days touching 30°C (86°F). From June through August, expect just a couple of rainy days per month. Around lunchtime, stiff coastal breezes make sailing off Sardinia a marvel. Although in the Strait of Bonifacio – where the huge islands of Sardinia and Corsica are separated by a mere 11km (6.8mi) of the ocean – the westerly wind vectors through like a ceiling fan on steroids. Seeking seclusion? Steer slightly away from the Costa Smeralda during the Italian school holidays from mid-July to late August. There are over 1,800km (1,118mi) of the Sardinian coastline to explore instead.

How to get to Sardinia

Olbia Costa Smeralda airport is the continental hub for Sardinia’s principal cruising area – its diminutive size promises a speedy exit to the taxi rank. From here, it’s a 20-minute drive – or slower bus ride – to the area’s principal marinas.

Sardinia: An Enchanting Mediterranean Gem

Located west of the Italian Peninsula and south of Corsica , Sardinia’s unique geography features rugged mountains, pristine beaches, and lush forests. The island’s fascinating history dates back to ancient times, with Phoenician, Carthaginian, and Roman influences evident in its archaeological sites and ancient monuments. Today, Sardinia offers a blend of Italian, Spanish, and North African cultures, resulting in a captivating mix of traditions, cuisine, and architecture.

Sailing Areas in Sardinia

A Sardinia yacht charter presents endless opportunities to explore the island’s various sailing areas. From the sophisticated marinas of the Costa Smeralda to the wild beauty of the Gulf of Orosei, there is something for every sailor and traveller.

Sailing the Costa Smeralda

The Costa Smeralda, or Emerald Coast, is Sardinia’s most famous sailing area. Known for its upscale resorts, turquoise waters, and hidden coves, the Costa Smeralda is a popular destination for luxury yacht charters. Set sail from the stylish marina of Porto Cervo and explore the enchanting islands of the La Maddalena Archipelago.

Sailing the Gulf of Orosei

The Gulf of Orosei, on Sardinia’s eastern coast, is renowned for its dramatic cliffs, secluded beaches, and crystal-clear waters. This unspoiled region offers a more adventurous sailing experience, with hidden coves and caves to explore. Visit the picturesque village of Cala Gonone and discover the stunning beaches of Cala Luna and Cala Goloritzé.

Sailing the South and West Coasts

The southern and western coasts of Sardinia offer a variety of sailing experiences, from the bustling marina of Cagliari to the tranquil waters of the Sinis Peninsula. Explore the ancient ruins of Nora or relax in the serene anchorages of the Gulf of Oristano.

Sardinia’s Best Marinas and Anchorages

A Sardinia yacht charter allows you to uncover an array of marinas and anchorages, each with its unique charm. Some of the island’s top marinas include Porto Cervo, Porto Rotondo, and Cagliari, which offer excellent facilities, vibrant waterfronts, and a wide selection of dining and entertainment options. For those seeking more secluded anchorages, the Gulf of Orosei, the La Maddalena Archipelago, and the Sinis Peninsula are perfect destinations.

Why Sardinia is a Fantastic Sailing Destination

Sardinia’s breathtaking scenery, crystal-clear waters, and rich cultural heritage make it an unbeatable sailing destination. Whether you’re exploring the chic resorts of the Costa Smeralda, delving into the unspoiled beauty of the Gulf of Orosei, or uncovering the ancient history of the island’s southern coast, a Sardinia yacht charter guarantees a memorable adventure.

Sailing Conditions and Best Time to Visit

Sardinia enjoys a Mediterranean climate, with hot, dry summers and mild, wet winters. The ideal time to sail in Sardinia is between May and October when temperatures range from 22°C to 30°C. During these months, the prevailing winds are the Mistral from the northwest and the Sirocco from the southeast, providing excellent sailing conditions. June to August are the busiest months for yacht charters, so if you prefer a more peaceful experience, consider visiting in May, September, or October.

Must-Do, Must-See, and Must-Experience Highlights

A Sardinia yacht charter offers a wealth of unforgettable experiences. To make the most of your sailing adventure, be sure to explore these must-see sights and activities:

SARDINIA YACHT CHARTER SUMMARY

We’ve been there.

NauticEd has been to Sardinia and loved every minute of our yacht charter.  Chartering the Costa Smeralda and Maddalena Archipelago offered some of the bluest water we’ve ever seen.  Rocky formations, delicious cuisine, fantastic summer winds, charming villages, local nightlife, and proximity to Corsica made our charter (and that of the other 7 boats on our flotilla) an amazing experience.

Sailing Skill Level

Knowledge – Skills – Experience:

✔ Intermediate Plus

We list sailing in the Sardinia area as Intermediate Plus because of the potential for high winds from the Mistral (North Westerly) and the Scirocco (South Easterly). Both winds can become quite high and 30 knots can be common. You should be confident and competent enough to be able to handle such winds for not only sailing but docking in a tight marina. Additionally, at all marinas, you will be doing Mediterranean mooring maneuvers – you should thus be competent at this form of docking.

Sailing Skill Levels ›

When to go?

Like all Mediterranean sailing yacht charter destinations, the ideal time to charter in Sardinia is between May and October.  The shoulder months of June and September are less crowded and less hot than the prime months of July and August. During the summer months (June to September), the prevailing winds are the Mistral and the Scirocco.  Winds and sailing conditions can be strong in the Strait of Bonifacio and care must be exercised for the crossing.

Sardinia experiences a Mediterranean climate from June to September, with warm to hot temperatures and minimal rainfall. July and August are the hottest months, perfect for beach activities, while September offers milder temperatures with warm seas and fewer crowds.

Winds shift weekly between the strong North West Mistral from the French mountains to the South Easterly Scirocco from Northern Africa. The 20 miles straight between Sardinia and Corsica tend to funnel the winds making them potentially strong.

Good to Know

Sardinia offers a wide variety of sailing regions:

Costa Smeralda: Located in the northeast of Sardinia, the emerald coast is one of the most glamorous sailing destinations featuring luxury resorts, upscale marinas, and charming towns.

The Maddalena Archipelago is just north of the Costa Smeralda and is a group of islands known for their natural beauty and clear waters with plenty of anchorages waiting to be explored.

The Gulf of Orosei, on the eastern coast of Sardinia  is known for its dramatic limestone cliffs, hidden coves, and stunning sea caves.

Southern Sardinia/Cagliari.  The southern coast of Sardinia offers a mix of sandy beaches and vibrant coastal towns with cultural attractions.

Western/Northwestern/Alghero.  The western coast of Sardinia features historic towns such as Alghero with its Catalan influence as well as the vibrant city of Oristano.

Must See & Do

Regardless of the region of Sardinia you are chartering from, there are tons of activities to do, sites to see, towns to explore, and beaches for relaxation.

  • Visit the glamorous resort town of Porto Cervo known for its luxury yachts, upscale boutiques, and vibrant nightlife.
  • Sail to the stunning Spiaggia del Principe (Prince’s Beach), a beautiful sandy bay surrounded by granite cliffs.
  • Visit Caprera Island, known for its rugged landscapes and connection to Italian hero Giuseppe Garibaldi.
  • Cross the Strait of Bonifacio to visit the picturesque town of Bonifacio or the glamorous Porto Vecchio in Corsica, France.
  • Wander through the medieval cobbled streets of Alghero’s Old Town, characterized by Catalan architecture and ancient walls.
  • Take a scenic boat trip or hike to Neptune’s Grotto, an impressive sea cave with stunning stalactites and stalagmites.
  • Sail to Capo Caccia, a majestic limestone promontory, and admire its dramatic cliffs and panoramic views over the sea.
  • Stroll through the narrow streets of Cagliari’s historic Old Town Be sure to visit Bastione di Saint Remy, a terrace overlooking Cagliari, and enjoy breathtaking panoramic views of the city’s skyline and harbor.
  • Embark on a guided tour of Grotte Is Zuddas, a stunning cave system adorned with stalactites and stalagmites near Cagliari.

How to get there?

With main charter bases in Cagliari, Alghero, Olbia, Portisco, and Cannigione , choose an international airport close to base:  Cagliari Elmas Airport (CAG), Olbia Costa Smeralda Airport (OLB) or Alghero-Fertilia Airport (AHO).  Alternatively you can take a ferry to Sardinia from several ports in Italy and other Mediterranean countries. Major Sardinian ferry ports include:

Porto Torres, Olbia, and Cagliari all of which have several connections with several other Italian ports and even some with Spain.

NauticEd Sardinia Customer Experiences

Brody B. Toronto, Canada: What an incredible 7 days sailing in Sardinia with NauticEd! It was my first-ever sailing trip and from the moment I stepped onto the boat I knew I was in great hands! From feeling safe and secure with our knowledgeable captain and crew, to dining on incredible food and exploring new ports and towns every day, it was a spectacular way to see Sardinia. The astounding sites paired with the awesome group of people onboard made it a once-in-a-lifetime trip. Take me back!

Jeff K. Austin, Texas: We had a fantastic time sailing through the Costa Smeralda. Our chartered catamaran was new and comfortable with great amenities. There was a huge selection of beautiful places to stop whether beaches for swimming or marinas where we would overnight and enjoy the local culture and food. The landscape and water cannot be described but must be experienced.

Porto Cervo should not be missed just for the experience of what a typical yacht stop looks like for the billionaires (Which did not include us 😕) but there were some great shopping and dining there too.

The sailing was great. Lots (and lots) of good wind, helping us regularly achieve about eight knots.

All in all, wonderful trip that I would highly recommend.

A sardinia yacht charter sounds amazing i’d like to….

NauticEd are expert Sardinia yacht charter agents (we’ve been there). We don’t charge you a fee and can more than likely save you money on all your sailing vacations. We search the world’s databases for over 8,000 yachts in 55 destinations. We give expert advice on where and when to go – likely, we’ve been there. Make an inquiry and book your sailing vacations through NauticEd Sailing Vacations.

Additional Notes

Sailing skill levels.

Local Knowledge + Education: as Sailing Vacation Experts, NauticEd’s team has chartered and sailed in almost all these locations – providing you with the “local knowledge” you need when planning a sailing vacation. And, as the leader in sailing education, NauticEd assigns different skill levels based on the knowledge-theory and practical/experience needed for chartering in different sailing locations.

Recommended Knowledge-Theory Courses for chartering: Bareboat Charter Master Bundle (six bareboat and near coastal courses), Catamaran Sailing Confidence (if chartering a Cat), Yacht Charter Crew Course (for your crew).

Skill Levels notably emphasize the overall practical experience and competency that is required to sail in certain areas. Of course, the “devil’s in the details” on specifics, and we recommend you contact us when planning a sailing vacation. We’ll save you money on your vacation – which is great – but being prepared to have safe fun experiences that will last a lifetime is priceless!

• Intermediate = Near Coastal navigation hazards (always be aware), and generally mild weather conditions. Good seapersonship (i.e., “seamanship”) skills, knowledge, and experience apply.

• Intermediate +Plus = Near Coastal clear atmospheric conditions, moderate navigation hazards , and/or challenging weather . Good seapersonship skills, knowledge, and experience apply.

• Advanced = Near Coastal clear atmospheric conditions, many navigation hazards , and/or potentially difficult weather . Expert seapersonship skills, knowledge, and experience apply.

*Atmospheric conditions: from the deck of a sailboat, your “visible horizon” is about 12nm on a clear day (considering typical freeboard + your height). Visibility is decreased by haze, fog, rain, smoke, and similar atmospheric considerations. Navigating by line of sight is obviously greater if your destination has features such as mountains, lighthouses, tall buildings, etc…

*Navigational hazards may include features such as rocks, shoals, rough inlets or anchorages, challenging tides and currents, lee shores, commercial traffic, etc…

*Weather: examples of challenging or difficult weather include thunder/lightning storms, areas prone to high winds, or even seasonal risks such as excessive heat.

Sardinia yacht charter, with sapphire lagoons and sunlit seas, glamorous marinas and achingly beautiful archipelagos, sardinia is pure yachting paradise, drenched in colour and light..

Why Visit Sardinia on a Luxury Yacht Charter?

A Sardinia yacht charter is all bright sunshine and sparkling water, swimming off the yacht in the hot and heady days of a Mediterranean summer, and warm, decadent nights strolling along glamorous waterfronts with a gelato, the lights of the yachts reflecting across the water.

Each year, superyacht charters flock to the Costa Smeralda to enjoy the stunning beaches, dropping anchor in water so crystal clear that the seabed is visible far below. In the evenings, guests come ashore to some of the most exclusive ports on the planet, where Champagne flows like summer rain and the beautiful people dine and dance under starry skies.

Enchanting Space

Yet there’s so much more to a Sardinia yacht charter than breathtaking beaches and high glamour.

Sardinia is the Mediterranean’s second largest island, with a diverse landscape that includes towering sand dunes, deep green forests and rugged granite mountains. Offshore, WWII wrecks and Roman roads lie under the surface, and in Sardinia’s ancient heart, prehistoric ruins litter the landscape and villagers go about their business as they have for millennia, surrounded by rolling vineyards, grazing sheep, and sunny citrus groves.

DH Lawrence said of Sardinia ‘This earth doesn’t resemble to some other place. Sardinia is another thing: enchanting space around and distance to be traveled, nothing of ended, nothing definitive. It is as the same liberty.’

There is no better way to enjoy that freedom and explore Sardinia than aboard a Sardinia luxury yacht charter.

The port of Porto Cervo in Sardinia

Float through moonscape archipelagos & turquoise lagoons

The medieval haunt of smugglers and pirates, the arid islands off Sardinia rise out of startlingly blue water, giant boulders encircling lagoons and coves of exquisite beauty.

The  Maddalena Islands  are a dreamy archipelago of pink granite rock and turquoise water, with stunning beaches backed by emerald pines and walking paths. Highlights of the Maddalena islands are the superb lagoon of Porto della Madonna, the huge boulder formations of Rizzoli islands, and the famous pink sands of Spiaggia Rosa, the location for Antonioni’s film Il Deserto Rosso.

Despite their fierce, remote beauty, the Maddalena islands offer some fine restaurants and your Captain will be happy to advise you on where to go!

Beyond the Maddalenas are the uninhabited  Lavezzi Islands,  technically part of Corsica but easily included on a Sardinia yacht charter. The giant grey granite rocks of the Lavezzis frame beaches of blinding blue water, while yellow-horned poppy flowers clamber over this barren, bewitching landscape. The snorkelling and diving off the Lavezzi is exceptional, with colonies of giant grouper, schools of barracuda, and red gorgonian fans aplenty.

Sardinia has other beautiful, fascinating islands in the north, such as the mountainous island kingdom of  Tavolara  which has its own king (who doubles as a restaurant owner), and the tiny island of  Asinara , an abandoned high-security prison island that is now populated by a 250-strong herd of miniature albino donkeys. If you’re cruising the south, the pretty island of  Isola di San Pietro  enchants with its quiet cobbled streets, clifftop lighthouse, and Ligurian dialect.

Picnic and play on beaches straight out of a dream

The beaches of Sardinia are some of the best in the world, with glimmering blue-green waters and sugar white sands. Sardinia’s coastline is more than a thousand miles long, and the beaches are as diverse as the island, from the breathtaking cliff-lined coves of the  Costa Smeralda  in the north to the incredible desert landscapes of the  Torre dei Corsari  on the western coast, where shifting sand dunes up to 70m high tower above the sea. For gently rolling sand dunes covered in pretty wildflowers and sea grasses, cruise to  Capo Camino  or  Santa Lucia  on the east coast or  Chia  or  Teulada  in the south, while those looking for a laid-back beach club scene should head to  San Teodoro  just south of the Costa Smeralda, with its long sandy beaches and pink flamingo lagoons.

The majority of Sardinia yacht charters will spend most of their time on the dazzling  Costa Smeralda , where the undulating, honey-coloured cliffs break the coast up into secluded coves of magnificent beauty, with powder soft beaches sloping gently away into crystal clear seas. The Emerald Coast provides the perfect location for anchoring off and playing on watertoys, or going ashore for luxury beach picnics in the cool shade of the cliffs.  Liscia Ruja  and  Spiaggia del Principe  are favourite beaches of the superyacht set, while  Spiaggia Pevero  ( Spiaggia del Piccolo Pevero  and a larger sandy beach called  Spiaggia del Grande Pevero ),  Carpiccioli , and  Romazzino  are also standouts.

Live the high life in glamorous superyacht marinas

The towns of  Porto Cervo  and  Porto Rotondo  on the Costa Smeralda have an incredible energy in the summer months, with superyachts clustered in the marinas and an intoxicating atmosphere of celebrity parties and jet-set decadence.

Purpose-built by the Aga Khan in the 1960s, the ultra-exclusive village of  Porto Cervo  is all pastel stucco and archways overlooking the sea, with high-end hotels and fine restaurants lining the cobbled streets. Guests on a Sardinia yacht charter might shop at Hermes or Bottega Veneta, Louis Vuitton or Versace, or spend the morning playing a round of golf at the incredible  Pevero Golf Course , carved into the Costa Smeralda cliffs. Lunch might be at Sardinia’s most fashionable beach club,  Phi Beach,  where lush Bedouin tents and elegant dining tables sit in the garden above the lapping water, or perhaps back in town at the endlessly sophisticated  Costa Smeralda Yacht Club . The afternoon stretches out before you: ample time for watersports in Cala di Volpe bay, or swimming at one of the nearby beaches.

Two yachts alongside each other in Port Cervo

As sunset approaches, have drinks on the sundeck of your charter yacht or cocktails at  Orange Beach  as the DJ’s get the party started, before adjourning to dinner at one of the great restaurants of Porto Cervo:  Gianni Pedrinelli’s, Il Pescatore,  or  Restaurant Cala di Volpe  at the eponymous hotel. For a stunning view over the coast, you can dine one mile inland at the excellent  I Frati Rossi , where the menu includes amberjack tartare and fresh made pasta with saffron-scented lobster. Of course, you could just spend a leisurely day at the iconic  Billionaire Club , moving from the pool terrace, to  Crazy Fish  restaurant, and onto the VIP lounges and dance floors of the two prestigious clubs. For an elegant nightcap, the American cocktail bar  Il Portico  is a splendid choice, or for an atmospheric drink overlooking the marina, the  Aqua Lounge  (at the yacht club)   pool terrace is hard to beat, and only livens up as the evening rolls on.

Porto Rotondo  is another upscale town at the southern end of the Costa Smeralda, with a luxury marina, fine dining restaurants, designer boutiques, and a gorgeous piazza and church. Dine on a pool terrace under stone archways at  Stella di Gallura , or take a veranda table overlooking the water at  Lu Stazzu  to enjoy an authentic Sardinian feast of suckling pork, pasta, and fresh-caught seafood. Set on a circular bay and surrounded by stunning beaches and spa resorts, Porto Rotondo is a sparkling gem on the emerald coast.

Venture into the delicious, sweet-smelling heart of Sardinia

Moving away from the designed luxury towns of the Costa Smeralda, you find the beating heart of Sardinia. Behind the beaches, groves of eucalyptus and emerald pines give way to the thorny macchia scrub that releases its fragrance under the Mediterranean sun- wild pistachios and strawberries, myrtle, cypress and juniper, rosemary and lavender.

Forests of cork trees, oak and chestnut carpet the rolling hills, interspersed with olive and lemon groves and rocky fields where sheep and goats graze in an ancient landscape. Time has seemingly stood still in the medieval hamlets of rural Sardinia, with scenes straight out of a National Geographic photo shoot: elderly matriarchs dressed in black gossiping on doorsteps, Sunday streets filled with worshippers, and gnarled, weatherbeaten farmers in old garb leading short-legged donkeys along country lanes.

Wild Beauty

As you venture further away from the coast you come to the rugged granite mountains of Sardinia- low lying but fierce in their wild, pure beauty. Where Sardinia’s islands were the haven of smugglers and pirates, the mountain caves and canyons were the domain of the famous banditos. Up here, wild horses roam free, and eagles, vultures and falcons wheel above the eyries, giving the high country a haunting, almost eerie beauty. You might visit the staggering granite formations of the  Gallura  region, walk through the oleander-scented valleys of the jagged, lonely  Monte Sette Fratelli  in the southeast, or explore the stupendous gorges and peaks of the  Supramonte , with sheer cliffs that fall away into the deep, cool sea.

On a Sardinia yacht charter, take a day trip from the yacht to hike, quad-bike, or horse-ride through Sardinia’s stunning interior, uncovering the ancient Sard culture and cuisine as you go.

Savour the Sard cuisine

In Sardinia, local markets in sunny squares overflow with produce: local honey with hints of carob, deep green olive oil, fragrant myrtle liqueur, and the giant wheels of Pecorino cheese that Sardinian cuisine is famous for. On a Sardinia yacht charter, be sure to try the local specialties: podeccu, suckling pig; a handful of hot fried picarel fish; or bottarga, cured mullet roe grated over pasta and wild asparagus. Fregola are delicious balls of semolina dough, while for desert, seada fritters delight with their sweet cheese and lemon zest filling and finished off with a drizzle of honey. For wine enthusiasts, the vineyards of Sardinia produce spumante, red and white wines, including the popular Vermontino di Galllura and the delicious Cannonau red variety.

Explore fairy tombs and Roman amphitheatres

Sardinia is littered with remnants of the past, the most common the thousands of stone towers of the Nuraghic people, an ancient Sardinian culture who lived here thousands of years before the age of Christ. The early Sardinians lived in caves, and when they emerged to live in the fields and forests they continued to bury their dead and leave idols in sacred caves, carved out of the rock into fantastical fairy tombs, giants tombs, and witch houses. These fairy tombs can be seen near the coast at  Alghero  and in cliff faces in the mountains, while the best example of nuraghic ruins is the UNESCO-world heritage site at  Barumini,  north of Cagliari.

Waves of conquerors ruled Sardinia after the Nuraghic people, with Phoenicians, Carthaginians, and Romans leaving their mark on the island, with the ancient Punic and later Roman town of  Nora  an excellent example of amphitheatre, temple, and baths.

Stroll Ancient Cities and Pretty Fishing Villages

If you can drag yourself away from Sardinia’s beaches, the cities and towns have an enormous amount to offer visitors.

Beautifully restored  Alghero  on the north west coast is a highlight of any Sardinian yacht charter, with its Catalan architecture and historic centre, while the spectacular  Neptune’s Grotto  is found on a cliff-face nearby, accessible only by yacht or by a dizzyingly steep stairway cut into the rock. Slightly further south is the splendid river town of  Bosa , palm trees and pastel buildings lining the water, while a short cruise away is the charming town of  Stintinto  with its pretty harbours full of fishing boats and stunning  La Pelosa   beach . Also in the north west, the brightly painted medieval village of  Castelsardo  sits above the gulf of Asinara, its castle ruins a place of epic beauty high up on the crag above the town.

Cagliari , the capital in the south, is undergoing a cosmopolitan revolution, with wine bars and boutique hotels popping up across this ancient Italian city of palazzos and shady piazzas, with the walled Castello quarter providing astonishing views across the water.

La Maddalena  islands are considered some of the best dive spots for a Sardinia yacht charter, with giant boulders covered in corals and the marine reserve creating a haven for large groupers, barracuda, octopus, eels, and spiny lobster.  Costa Paradiso  in the northwest is also very good indeed, and  Capo Caccia  near Alghero has a superb tunnel and cave network stretching over 350m. On the east coast,  Cala Gonone  provides WWII wrecks and interesting underwater terrain, while  Santa Maria de Navarrese  is the home of a bomber plane and some great boulders, caves, and red coral. If you’re venturing into the south, the  Gulf of Cagliari  offers some fantastic WWII wreck dives, including the  Romagna , which was sunk by a mine in 1943 and the large warship, the  Isonzo . For ancient history buffs, the  Gulf of Teulada  hides remnants of Roman shipwrecks, while just off the shore at  Nora  is where scuba divers can find the marble floor of the ancient flooded port, as well as a sunken Roman highway leading out to sea.

Cruise across to stunning Corsica

As if there wasn’t enough wonder in Sardinia alone, Corsica is just a very short cruise away across the Bonifacio Strait, and is very often included on a Sardinia yacht charter. Please check out Bespoke Yacht Charter’s Corsica yacht charter guide .

A Sardinia yacht charter is the ultimate way to discover Sardinia’s glamorous ports, dreamy archipelagos and stunning beaches in the dazzling light of a Mediterranean summer. But don’t forget to take a day trip inland, to the wild, pure heart of ancient Sardinia.

When is the best time to visit Sardinia on a luxury crewed motor yacht?

The best time to visit Sardinia is during the summer months when you can enjoy wonderfully warm temperatures and sun-drenched days. The shoulder seasons – fall and spring – are also superb times to visit. While the temperatures will likely be a little cooler than in the summer, a key benefit is that Sardinia will be less crowded, providing a more intimate experience.

Average temperatures in Sardinia

  • Summer (June to August): During the summer months, Sardinia can experience high temperatures, with averages ranging from around 25 to 30 degrees Celsius (77 to 86 degrees Fahrenheit). In July and August, temperatures can sometimes exceed 30 degrees Celsius (86 degrees Fahrenheit) or more.
  • Spring (March to May) and Fall (September to November): During the shoulder seasons, temperatures are milder. Spring temperatures range from around 15 to 25 degrees Celsius (59 to 77 degrees Fahrenheit), while autumn temperatures can be similar. These seasons are often considered pleasant for outdoor activities.
  • Winter (December to February): Winters in Sardinia are relatively mild compared to many other European destinations. Average temperatures during the winter months typically range from 8 to 15 degrees Celsius (46 to 59 degrees Fahrenheit).

Average water temperatures in Sardinia

  • Summer (June to August) : During the summer, the sea around Sardinia is at its warmest, with water temperatures ranging from approximately 22 to 26 degrees Celsius (72 to 79 degrees Fahrenheit). This is the ideal time to maximize all your yacht’s tenders and water toys.
  • Spring (March to May) and Autumn (September to November): In the shoulder seasons, water temperatures are cooler than in summer but still comfortable. Spring temperatures may range from around 15 to 19 degrees Celsius (59 to 66 degrees Fahrenheit), and autumn temperatures can be similar.
  • Winter (December to February) : Winter brings cooler water temperatures, with averages ranging from around 13 to 15 degrees Celsius (55 to 59 degrees Fahrenheit). While it may be too chilly for swimming in winter, the coastal areas remain picturesque, and it’s still possible to use water toys such as kayaks and jet skis to explore Sardinia’s coastline.

No matter what time of year you want to rent a luxury motor boat in Sardinia, Moran Yacht & Ship can help.

How far in advance do I need to book a Sardinia yacht rental?

Sardinia is a popular Italy yacht charter destination, so for the best selection of vessels, you should book as far in advance as possible. However, it’s still possible to book last-minute getaways, as long as you are flexible around the charter vessel and dates. If you want to book a luxury yacht charter in Sardinia, contact the charter experts at Moran Yacht & Ship.

How many crew will there be on my Sardinia yacht charter?

The number of crew members on a luxury yacht charter will differ, and you will typically find more crew the larger the vessel. Generally, the crew on a luxury yacht includes:

  • Captain : Responsible for navigation, safety, and overall management of the yacht.
  • Chef or Cook : Prepares meals and ensures the culinary aspect of your charter is exceptional.
  • Steward(ess) : Attend to guests, handle housekeeping duties, and provide excellent service.
  • Deckhands : Assist with various tasks, including handling ropes, water toys, and general maintenance.

For smaller yachts, expect a crew of around 4 to 5, while the largest superyachts will often boast a crew above 20. The larger the yacht, the more likely you will have specialized crew members, including an engineer, masseuse, personal trainer, sommelier, or dive instructor. Your yacht’s crew is there to enhance your overall experience, providing a high level of service, catering to your needs, and ensuring the safety and smooth operation of the yacht.

Specific crew arrangements can be discussed with your charter broker, and it’s often possible to customize the crew to meet your preferences and requirements.

How many guests can I take with me to Sardinia?

Most yacht charters are limited to a maximum number of 12 guests, even if their cabin figuration means they can technically sleep a higher number of guests. Charter vessels are normally limited to 12 guests due to the additional compliance and regulations they must meet to be able to carry more guests. However, there are charter vessels that can sleep more than 12 guests. Moran Yacht & Ship can help connect you with your ideal vessel, whether you are looking for a refined motor yacht for your immediate family or a mega yacht that can carry a large group of friends. Contact our team today and let us make your Sardinia vacation a reality.
