Royal Huisman’s New Blue, 192-Foot Superyacht ‘Phi’ Hits the Water

Royal Huisman has an established track record of building complex, interesting and distinctive sailing superyachts, including the 184-foot Aquarius and the 190-foot Ngoni . Its just-released Phi is a 192-foot motoryacht that is just as stunning and unique as its sister sailing vessels.

The Dutch yard is being coy about releasing too many details before the yacht is handed over to the owner later this year. Phi ‘s interior by London design firm Lawson Robb is definitely a no-go area, but readers can get a sense of the naval architecture and exterior design through images the yard just issued.

Dutch designer Cor D. Rover, with years of successful designs in both the custom and semi-custom sectors, designed Phi ’s exterior, naming it after a mathematical concept for the Irrational number Phi that has been around since the ancient Greeks. Also known as the golden ratio, Phi goes on forever after the decimal point without repeating itself, with the result that it has gained a reputation for reflecting never-ending beauty and natural harmony. Rover ran with the concept, saying he was inspired by “the galaxy, the ocean’s surface and the underwater world” in forming the design.

How those three big ideas translate physically into the actual design will require a longer explanation from Rover, now sworn to secrecy, but it’s clear that Phi’ s naval architecture by Van Oossanen Naval Architects gives the yacht its long, sleek form. The Fast Displacement XL hull keeps it under the 500-gross ton designation and, according to Royal Huisman, makes it the longest superyacht under 500 gross tons. The design also gives Phi  a respectable top speed, along with increased fuel efficiency.

The design was a challenge to pull off technically, said the shipyard, but Royal Huisman is used to facing complex technical problems. It also faced outsized challenges on its other big motoryacht project, 406, which will be the world’s largest sportfishing yacht once launched. The 171-footer not only looks like an authentic angler’s convertible on steroids, complete with a massive fishing cockpit and billfish fighting chair, but it will also boast impressive top speeds on its way to offshore fishing grounds.

Royal Huisman CEO Jan Timmerman says the shipyard tries to accommodate the big, seemingly fantastical ideas of owners and designers, “rather than trying to persuade them to scale back their ambitions.”

PHI will also come with a matching 118-foot shadow boat, courtesy of the same design team but built at Alia Yachts. Both mothership and shadow boat will be revealed in more detail by the end of the year.

Her low draft of 2.15m/7'1" makes her primed for accessing shallow areas and cruising close to the shorelines. Phi features at-anchor stabilizers providing exceptional comfort levels. She was built to ABS (American Bureau of Shipping) ✠A1, Commercial Yachting Service, Ⓔ, (✠)AMS classification society rules, and is MCA Compliant.

Sunrise Yachts, a luxury yacht building company which is based in Turkey, has been made a main sponsor of next year’s 2011 Moscow International Boat Show (MIBS). The four-day Russian yacht show event is currently scheduled to run from April 14-17 at the Moscow’s Crocus exhibition centre.

MIBS is organised by the ITE Group and it is one of Russia’s leading boat shows and is an internationally recognised superyacht event. The show covering everything from small parts and accessories to large superyacht with over 9,000 people and 178 exhibitors attended the last year show.

The Paolo Scanu-designed Sunrise 45 yacht is an ocean-going cruising yacht that was released in 2009 to much acclaim at this was the group’s first-ever model.

Sunrise Yachts was founded in 2007 by the German entrepreneur Herbert P Baum along with the French-British yacht builder Guillaume Roché. The luxury yacht group is based in Antalya, Turkey and utilises a 10,000sq m shipyard facility. Sunrise has two sheds measuring 100m (328ft) x 16m (53ft), as well as a 70m (230ft) x 16m (53ft) fully acclimatized paint shed that can accommodate new-build and refit projects up to 65m (213ft) in length and 1,200 tonnes displacement.

Along each side of the yacht-building facility, space is available for long-term sub-contractors with the latest equipment and logistics capabilities, along with air-conditioned storage, ventilation and extraction plants. The shipyard is organized as an “assembler,” based loosely on the car industry’s model, with a small, yet powerful project management team charged with running all the in-house long-term sub-contractors.

For the shipyard-team the same moment is however bittersweet, having to say farewell to a yacht which creation has been part of their daily lives, but at the same time knowing that the yacht is leaving to conquer the oceans.

The Royal Huisman team is never complacent about such success – they never forget that it only lasts until the next boat. Acknowledgements by independent expert juries help to provide an objective measure of achievement.

REGATTA SUCCESS

Some yachts are conceived with the strong desire for fast passages and podium places. Royal Huisman is no stranger to delivering the lightest, most luxurious and reliable yachts, with fast and efficient sail handling systems to suit the individual owner’s brief.

Regatta results and sea-kindly ocean cruises – proving time and time again that you can, “have your cake and eat it”.

When the late Wolter Huisman was asked if the shipyard could build a certain type of yacht, his answer was immediate and very clear: „If you can dream it, we can build it“. Sometimes however, even dreams need a little inspiration.

YACHTS FOR SALE & CHARTER

Most superyachts from the Royal Huisman fleet are for private use only and are enjoyed ‘to the max’ by their Owners, families and friends – who sail them throughout the years on stunning locations all over the world. Only very few of these pedigree yachts are occasionally available for charter and an equally small number come up looking for a new Owner.

Yet, chartering is popular among those who may wish to experience sailing aboard a Royal Huisman yacht, simply to enjoy the charter or perhaps as a first step towards owning a superyacht. Others are actively seeking a Royal Huisman pedigree yacht to acquire, and have an interest in a particular yacht.
