An Insight into the Spanish Superyacht Hub of Port Denia

Located only 45 miles from Ibiza, on the East coast of Spain, is the superyacht centre of Port Denia . A dedicated superyacht shipyard and technical marina able to facilitate yachts up to 135m, Port Denia has become the ideal location for captains, owners and management companies. With extensive facilities and a driven team of experts, the Spanish port is certainly the ‘smart choice’ for those seeking yacht refit services, a winter yacht berth or charter pick-up from the Balearic Islands. We speak to Port Denia's General Manager, Albert Morell, to find out more about the port and its successes so far, as well as learn of its exciting plans for 2022.

‘We use the marina for all kinds of work including conducting a variety of refits,’ comments General Manager Albert, as we ask about the most notable features of Port Denia ’s technical marina, ‘for example, we can construct scaffolding in the water and do a full paint job. We also have one of the most capable sources of shore power at 1,250 amps.’

Although 135m is its official maximum length for its berths, Port Denia can impressively go further if needed: ‘technically our limit is 135m, but in front of our alongside berth, we have an area that we can temporarily rent from the port authority for superyachts up to 150m’ explains Albert. Completing refit work on the likes of the iconic Blohm & Voss 104.8m Lady Moura, Feadship’s 65m TRIDENT, and Lurssen’s 59m Vive La Vie, Port Denia's popularity is only upward. 

With a 150 GT travel lift, vast dry dock, an impressive amount of specialist workshops, as well as two haul-out slipways, Port Denia boasts a wealth of comprehensive shipyard facilities: ‘currently, we have a slipway of 1,250 tonnes for boats up to 65m - we say that 65m is the maximum yacht that we can haul out, but we could manage a light 70m!’ 

But that's not all. Albert reveals the next steps for the port: ‘we will be starting the construction of a new travel lift very soon: it will be around 20,000 sqm. In this new area, we will have additional space for around seven, maybe eight yachts of around 40m - 45m in the yard. ’  This impressive expansion evidences Port Denia’s ongoing success, as the new addition is set to double its overall size: ‘with the “old” area we already have around 20,000sqm and adding our new area of the same size will make the total area of our shipyard around 40,000sqm: Port Denia will be doubling in size!’ 

It appears that visitors won’t have to wait long either for this exciting new development: ‘it's been a long documentation process, but we’re at the end now, and we hope to start construction very soon. We aim to be completely finished by around May 2023' . 

Alongside this considerable expansion, Albert tells us that the port is investing in more than just its facility size. ‘In the last few years, we have significantly invested in the project management team, who are an integral part of our team. We have naval architects, mechanical engineers, as well as an in-house team of welders, electricians and carpenters, who are extremely knowledgeable and can cover the most important parts of the refits and work that needs to be done onboard.’ According to Albert, ‘it's important to build a strong team of people that, in the end, add value to the work that we’re doing here.’

Not only able to provide a complete service in-house, the shipyard is also, uniquely, open-door. ‘We have an open-door policy here at the shipyard where we welcome other companies to work with us and the yacht,’ comments Albert, ‘if you have a specific subcontractor or company that you usually use and want them to work on the project with us…we don’t have any problems with that!’

With the demand to go green now becoming more prevalent than ever for those in the industry, Albert explains how Port Denia is looking to make moves to become a cleaner establishment: ‘ we have a plan to install solar panels across the entire shipyard in order to have our facilities powered only by solar energy.’ Amazingly, Albert tells us, ‘that’s just an example of an investment we're starting this week!’

Ultimately, for the team at Port Denia, investing in a more eco-friendly approach has become an important continuous investment: ‘we are already very careful with our waste, and we always try to create little pollution; it's really something that all shipyards, as well as us, have to think about. We all have to invest in the most environmentally friendly facilities possible because it's the future of our industry. There is no way to do it differently.’ 

With two international airports, Alicante and Valencia, only one hour’s drive away, growing Port Denia is certainly a handy stop-off for superyacht owners, captains and crew, and offers the perfect opportunity to explore the vibrant Spanish destination, as well as further afield. ‘Ibiza is directly in front of us, and we are the closest port on the mainland to the island,’ explains Albert, ‘we have a daily ferry that connects Denia with Ibiza and Mallorca, which is great for connecting captains and crew with the islands, and in the summer there’s a daily ferry to Formentera too. The entire area around Denia is really nice - our coastline is quite similar to Ibiza’s, so it’s pretty great!’ 

The charming town of Denia offers visitors an appealing array of attractions all year round: ‘ one of the best things about Denia is that it's not just during summer that you have all of the restaurants and activities open, the town is alive all year!’ 

When we ask Albert about some of the best attractions of Denia, his first thought is, ‘ it's the perfect place for cycling!’ With vast mountains and glorious mild, sunny weather, Albert believes Denia to be, ‘one of the best places in Spain for cycling.’  Brimming with opportunities for fitness, Denia also harbours some of the best international five-star hotels and award-winning restaurants. Renowned for its sublime culinary culture, the town is a recognised UNESCO Creative City for Gastronomy and is home to a three-star Michelin restaurant, which, coincidently, is only two kilometres from Port Denia.

The 105m/344ft motor yacht was recently listed for sale and in preparation for her new Owner she is receiving an extensive refit of all her teak decks in addition to an overhaul of her main engines and generators, with engine room welding work currently underway.

Port Denia is capable of hauling out up to 1250 GT – equivalent to a superyacht of 65m/213ft in length. For maintenance work, the marina can provide a stern-to service that can be carried out in the water for convenience.

Mega yacht LADY MOURA is currently the world’s 46th largest motor yacht, having dropped down the rankings from 38th place in 2018 after a spate of mega yachts were launched last year. The 1990-built vessel comes from German shipyard Blohm + Voss, known for building some of the most iconic mega yachts including  A , DUBAI and ECLIPSE .

M/Y MOURA is known to have a swimming pool with a sliding roof, and both her name and her escutcheon are carved in 24-carat gold. She boasts accommodation for up to 30 guests and a crew of 61, making her ideal for an Owner to host large gatherings with family and friends, or as a luxury charter yacht for special occasions.

Anfahrt & Lage

• Die Marina de Denia ist ein neuer, sehr gepflegter und komfortabler Yachthafen in der Stadt Dénia in Alicante an der Ostküste Spaniens. Der Hafen ist die natürliche Seeverbindung zu den Balearen, da die Entfernung zu Ibiza nur 60 Seemeilen beträgt.
• Nach ca. 15 Minuten Fußmarsch erreicht man vom Hafen aus die schönen Altstadt, das altes Fischerviertel, die Markthalle, sehr guten Einkaufsmöglichkeiten und rund 600 Cafes und Restaurants in der Umgebung.
• Denia hat 3 Häfen: Nach der Einfahrt im östlichen Teil liegt die Marina El Portet Denia, Im Westen teilen sich die Marina de Denia und der Real Club Nautico de Denia das Areal. Wobei der Real Club Nautico näher an der Stadt liegt. Der günstigste der drei Häfen ist die Marina de Denia.
• Die Ansteuerung ist auch nachts problemlos. Riffe oder Untiefen gibt es nicht. Nachts ist die Hafeneinfahrt beidseits mehrfach befeuert.
• Ankern: Rechts und links vor der Hafeneinfahrt gibt es Ankermöglichkeiten.

Anlegen in der Marina de Denia

• Der Funk wird sofort beantwortet und ist 24 Stunden erreichbar.
• Ein Mitarbeiter zeigt den Liegeplatz und hilft beim Anlegen.
• Es wird an einer Mooring festgemacht.
• Nach dem Anlegen zeitnah im Hafenbüro einklarieren mit Pass o. Personalausweis, Versicherungspolice & Schiffspapieren.
• Die Mitarbeiterinnen im Office sprechen Englisch und teilweise Deutsch und sind sehr freundlich und hilfsbereit.
• Der Aufenthalt endet um 12:00 Uhr. Bei Verlängerung rechtzeitig Bescheid geben.

Ausstattung

• Duschen & Toiletten:  In einem der vorderen Gebäude sind 22  gepflegte und großzügige Einzelbäder untergebracht. Jedes ist mit eigener Toilette, Dusche ,heißem Wasser, großem Waschbecken, Spiegel, Sitzbank, Kleiderhaken, Klimaanlage und Musik ausgestattet. Die elektronische Ausstattung  und die Türverriegelung aktiviert man mit einer Plastikkarte (z.B. EC-Karte o.ä.), welche in ein elektronisches Kartenschloss gesteckt wird (wie in Hotels). Diese Karte wird nicht von der Marina gestellt.

• Wasseranschluß kostet extra
• Bootstankstelle & Gasstation befindet sich am Anfang der Ein- bzw. Ausfahrt der Marina de Denia und ist gut zu erkennen. Sie ist 24 Stunden geöffnet. Dort befinden sich auch die Sondermüll Deponie (Altöl, Batterien, etc.)
• Internetzugang: Guter Empfang auch an Bord. Die Zugangsdaten erhält man beim der Anmeldung im Marine-Office.

• Alle Stegtüren und die Sanitäranlagen sind mit einem Codeschloss gesichert.
• Wäscherei: 2 Waschmaschinen & 2 Trockner zur Selbstbedienung in den Räumlichkeiten der Sanitäranlagen. Ein Waschgang 4 Euro / ein Trockengang 3 Euro.
• Telefon, Fax & Mailversand: Die Benutzung steht im Marine-Office jederzeit zur Verfügung.
• Recycling: Die Mülltonnen befinden sich hinter den Gebäuden.

Besonderheiten

• Auf dem Dach des Hafenbüros ist das „ Zensa „. Eine tolle Lounge mit schöner Poollandschaft zum Entspannen. Leider nur während der Hauptsaison im Sommer geöffnet.

Was es nicht gibt

• Supermarkt: Der nächstgelegene kleine, nicht ganz günstige   Supermarkt  „Troya „  befindet sich in ca. 500 m Richtung Altstadt auf der linken Straßenseite. Einen  LIdl  erreicht man in ca. 1 km sowie einen großen Mercadona und Spar mitten in der Stadt.
• Bankautomaten: Der nächste Bankautomat befindet sich in ca. 500m vor dem Hotel „Port Denia“ an einem Kreisverkehr.
• Werft / Hebekran: Die Nachbar-Marinas „Real Club Nautico“ & „Marina El Portet“ verfügen darüber. Preise sind aber vergleichsweise hoch.

het was een heel leuk speels huis van alle gemakken voorzien. Prachtig zwembad; jammer genoeg nog iets te koud om steeds te zwemmen, maar wel een paar keer een paar baantjes gezwommen. Erg leuk vlakbij de jachthaven en leuke restaurantjes in de buurt.

De locatie was super. Vlak bij supermarkt, cafe's of restaurants. Vlakbij de haven en de zee en vlak bij het oude stadje

Om weer voor terug te komen. De foto’s beschrijven precies zoals het is rustig mooi sfeervol en dank aan Claus om hier mijn vakantie te mogen vieren. Ciao👌

The property was so well placed for the centre of Denia and the marinas and nearby restaurants. For Spain it was very quiet at night as it was set back from the road.

Lovely place to stay, is tranquil place to stay for couple's over 50. Would recommend to all that like quite surroundings. location is superb just over the road from port/Harbour were there are hundreds of boats. Walks and area has loads too see and do.

The accomodation was wonderful, the pool was lovely and it was much better than we expected. Claus was very welcoming!

Location was idealin all aspects. 10 minutes walking to town centre, marina, port, restaurants and castle. Has good private parking, garden and pool. Host very welcoming and obliging and knowledgeable about Denia - a pleasure to talk with Extremely quiet property. Good airconditioning for hot weather. Constant hot water.

Our hosts - Klaus and Gaby - were very kind, friendly and always helpful. Location was excellent, easy walking distance to all amenities and restaurants in Denia and the villa was very clean. The laundry facilities were welcome as we stayed for a month. The swimming pool was great - very clean and with chairs around it. The beds were comfortable and the laundry/ towels were changed frequently. Wifi and air conditioning worked well at all times.

Ideal location, quiet, but a walk away from the centre of Denia, marina & beach. Lovely pool area with summer kitchen. Claus was a lovely host, couldn’t fault his hospitality
