WELCOME TO ALBA SAILING

Bareboat and skippered yacht charter company on the west coast of scotland, telephone: +44 (0)1631 56 56 30.

ALBA SAILING is Scotland’s premier independent bareboat and skippered yacht charter company – we have provided quality service for over 35 years. From our purpose built shore side premises at Dunstaffnage Marina, Oban, Argyll in West Scotland we offer a wide choice of quality yachts from 31 – 46 feet for bareboat or skippered yacht charter. Unlike many charter companies, we own the majority of the yachts in our fleet so you can be sure of not only a warm personal welcome but also of our commitment to providing you with a well maintained and well equipped yacht that you will be proud to sail.

Our base is at the heart of Scotland’s West Coast cruising grounds so the Inner Hebrides, including the Isle of Mull and the Isle of Skye, can usually be circumnavigated within one week depending on whether you use bareboat or skippered charter. Our Cruising in West Scotland page gives you a brief outline of some of the many attractions our cruising area has to offer.

We have our own Chandlery and hire shop on-site and offer a range of services including waterproof clothing hire, freshly laundered bedding and towels etc.

There is a Tourist Information Centre in Oban and they can suggest hotels and Bed and Breakfasts in and around Oban in case you would like to extend your holiday. Their website is here  or you can phone them on +44 (0)1631 563122. We have also discovered a truly excellent transport provider and their details are on the download page of our website.

Enjoy our website and please feel free to contact us directly for any further information, advice or guidance on skippered or bareboat charter in West Scotland. We are here to help. Alba Sailing is run by sailors – for sailors! We are also on hand to discuss your Chandlery and Rigging requirements.

Charters Scotland

The rugged beauty of Scotland is of World renown. A yacht charter in Scotland is one of the best ways of exploring the country. The West Coast is sparsely inhabited and many places are only accessible by sea. For this reason, a bareboat yacht charter is an increasingly popular way of visiting the area. The scenery is spectacular and the wildlife unusual and diverse. There are lots of harbours and anchorages. We would challenge anyone who charters Scotland not to be impressed.

Charter West Scotland

One of the great things about Scottish charters is the unrivalled opportunity for peace and solitude. As anyone who has experienced the delights of a Yacht charter West Coast Scotland will testify, there are none of the crowds that are the norm in other popular areas of yacht charter UK. A cruise with Scottish Yacht Charter allows you the freedom to enjoy deserted anchorages should you wish to. The numerous islands to be found in this area mean that there is usually somewhere offering shelter whatever the direction of the wind. However one of the great things about Scottish charters is that, if you wish, there are plenty of charming coastal towns and villages offering opportunities for reprovisioning, visiting local attractions or just a welcoming pub.

Bavaria Yacht Charter

We are ideally placed to offer the perfect location for your yacht charter west coast. Our small fleet of yachts is perfect for Scottish charters, being relatively new and fully equipped. Colour plotters, electric anchor windlasses and single line reefing will all enhance the experience of your Scottish Yacht Charter. As anyone familiar with this area will testify, the diesel heating found on all our boats can be very useful on occasions. For your visit ashore, our yachts are equipped with inflatable tenders and outboard motors at no extra charge. All of these features will help to make your sailing charter Scotland a memorable one.

A widely held misconception is that it always rains in Scotland. Aficionados of cruising the West Coast of Scotland will testify to the long periods of settled weather it is often possible to encounter. Of all the yacht charter UK areas Scottish charters are the ones blessed with the longest daylight hours. In midsummer a lucky sailor who charters Scotland will find that even at midnight it is often not entirely dark. Certainly the weather will usually allow barefoot yacht charters, if that is your fancy. As a result of the effects of the Gulf Stream, temperatures are a good deal higher than is generally appreciated.

Bareboat Charter Scotland

One of the considerations when selecting Scottish charters is the ease of access to our home ports. Craobh Haven and Largs marinas are easily accessible by road, train or even air. Our summer base at Craobh Haven is about 2 hours drive from Glasgow or Edinburgh and is approximately 20 miles from Oban, which is the nearest rail link. Largs Marina, our winter base is about 20 miles from Glasgow which in addition to road and rail links has its own airport. Your yachting charters Scotland will start and end with the minimum inconvenience as a result of the locations we have chosen. Anyone who is a client of ours and who charters Scotland regularly will appreciate the ease of access our sites offer for your sailing charter Scotland.

Inshore cruising

The West Coast of Scotland provides endless cruising possibilities. From small, idyllic anchorages to larger fishing villages and ports with all amenities there is something for everyone. The tidal waters make navigation essential to passage between islands, each one unique and set in the magical backdrop of an extinct volcanic landscape.

Kadore is based in Crinan, a picturesque village in southern Argyll, on the west coast of Scotland at the northern end of the Crinan Canal. The yacht is generally available for charter from early May until the end of September when the weather in these parts can offer some superb sailing. Kadore is a Nauticat 33, a 33ft ketch rig motorsailer built in 1989 in Finland, with plenty of room for 4 persons to be comfortable over any charter period. Her motorsailer characteristics make her an ideal choice of yacht for exploring the Western Isles of Scotland, from Skye in the north to Islay in the south. Whether under sail or powered by her 90HP Ford Lehman engine she can almost go anywhere in any weather. The covered wheelhouse provides all the protection you will need from the wind, the wet and the midges! Heating is ducted throughout the vessel adding an extra level of comfort. The carpentry is teak and other hardwoods throughout and, in keeping with her well appointed interior, smart new upholstery provides comfort in the saloon and sleeping cabins. Two ‘heads’, forward and aft, with shower and wash basins provide the essential facilities. A large galley running the length of the saloon provides the cooking and storage space to prepare all meals. Kadore comes with a 4 person inflatable tender and 2.3HP Honda 4-stroke outboard motor.

Kadore is available for weekly charter, and potentially for shorter periods depending on demand.

How to Book

The ‘bareboat charter’ price per week throughout the season (April to September 2024) is £2,100, with a £2,500 security deposit. ‘Skippered charter’ incurs an additional charge starting from £190 per day. A 5% discount is available for charters which are booked for 2 weeks or more. Charter weeks usually run from Sunday 12 noon to the subsequent Saturday 12 noon; a 24 hour turnaround is required following any charter period. The payment must be made in UK currency (GBP).

Please note that Yachtsman’s Travel Insurance through Topsail Insurance can also cover the £2,500 security deposit. For more details click on this link >> Topsail Insurance .

Diesel consumed over the charter period will be charged at cost.

Please complete the form on this page, and click on ‘Get in Touch’. We will then contact you to confirm availability and discuss your preferences and the finer details of your booking.  We will hold your provisional booking for a period of 14 days during which we expect to complete all paperwork and lodge a Booking Deposit.

We will send you the Charter Agreement to complete and return along with a Booking Deposit of £1,000. The deposit may be paid by bank transfer or Paypal.

We will return a copy of the Charter Agreement to you, fully signed.

Final payment, less the deposit paid, is due 6 weeks before the commencement of the Charter Period.

Short Term Charters

Charter over a shorter period is offered at £385 per day for a minimum of 3 days and subject to availability. Additional days (part-week) will also be charged at this rate.

Qualifications required

To comply with the insurance conditions, it is essential that any charterer and crew taking on a ‘bareboat’ charter have adequate experience and/or a minimum level of a qualification. This means that the Skipper must have at least an RYA Coastal Skipper qualification or be able to demonstrate competence and experience in coastal waters as Skipper in vessels of a similar size to Kadore. In addition, at least one other member of the crew must have an RYA Day Skipper qualification or be able to demonstrate sound experience to pilot the vessel to a safe haven should the Skipper be taken ill or injured. See RYA website for details : www.rya.org.uk

logo

For those who perhaps have less sailing experience we also offer the option of skippered charter for all or part of your charter.

You may for example have recently qualified with an ICC or as an RYA Day Skipper or have enjoyed a flotilla holiday - but still would appreciate some help or advice on handling a bareboat charter yacht whether for the first time or in a new area.

We will always take the time to carefully brief our clients on the yacht at the start of their holiday and will always be accessible by phone throughout the charter, ready to offer help and advice. However - if you'd please ask us to arrange this when you book – we'll also be happy to arrange for an experienced skipper to sail with you on the yacht. This could be just for the first day or two of your holiday - providing they can catch a ferry back to the mainland from Bute, Arran or wherever else you sail to!

The additional cost for a skipper – who in addition to being familiar with the yacht will know the area really well and will enjoy sharing that local knowledge with our clients - is typically around £150 per day. The skippers with whom we choose to work are each experienced, accomplished and pleasant individuals.

The yachts are coded for a fixed number of crew including the skipper - so if you'd like to hire a skipper for the charter of one of our yachts that's coded for say eight people, then the number aboard shouldn't total more than eight including the skipper. If you plan that a skipper should be with your charter party on the yacht for more than one day, then you should please also plan on allocating them a separate sleeping cabin too!

For bareboat charters in the Clyde area - unless you can show reasonable previous experience/mileage - we ask that the charter party should between them hold at least one RYA day skipper ticket and a VHF operators licence. To venture beyond the Clyde - unless you can demonstrate considerable previous experience – we ask that the charter party should between them hold at least one RYA coastal skipper or yachtmaster ticket, and a VHF operators licence.

If you would like us to arrange for you to get information about day or coastal skipper, VHF operator or other RYA courses, please click here to contact us.

In addition to our main Largs base, we can occasionally offer yachts for charter out of Crinan or Craobh marina or for one-way charters between Largs & Craobh/Crinan – please contact us regarding availability.

YOUR SAILING AREA

Outer hebrides and st kilda, scotland.

The main focus of this adventure sailing holiday is to reach the Outer Hebridean islands and as long as the weather is favourable, reach the far flung archipelago of  St Kilda . The wind and weather will determine your route and destination so it is never 100% guarantee that St Kilda will be reached. Once you have boarded, your skipper will have the latest weather forecast and will have a better idea of what you can expect from your holiday. Stravaigin’s owner and skipper John has lived and sailed in the Hebrides for a number of years so he certainly knows all the best spots off the beaten track.

Islands shrouded in Mystery

Lying out in the Atlantic, 45 miles west of the Outer Hebrides, St Kilda was once home to Britain’s most isolated community . It is the UK’s only site to have been awarded its UNESCO status for both its cultural and natural heritage. The history of the people, its inaccessibility and amazing wildlife make the islands an exceptionally desirable destination for anyone interested in natural history and bucket list adventures. Now uninhabited since the last humans were evacuated in the 1930’s, humans have been recorded living on St Kilda for over 2000 years with archeological research dating human traces as far back as the Neolithic period.

Explore the main island of Hirta with epic views of the other islands and stacks in the group – Dun, Soay, Stac Lee, Boreray and Stac an Armin .  The rest of the voyage will navigate guests to some of the most stunning scenery in the world, which is only accessible by sea. Think white sandy beaches with crystal clear waters framed by stark rocky hills patched in purple heather. If the weather doesn’t allow us to get out to St Kilda, rest assured, the Outer Hebrides is home to a wide choice of equally interesting islands to discover under sail.

Some popular and remote anchorages in the Outer Hebrides include Eriskay, Barra Head, Mingulay, Vatersay, Taransay, Scarp  and the  Monach Islands. Anchor up and explore these wonders by foot whilst soaking up the rugged coastlines and keeping your eyes peeled at all times for exotic flora, fauna, wildlife and interesting archaeological remains.

Sightings of seabirds such as Black Guillemots can be seen in their hundreds and white-tailed eagles soar along the rugged coastline. Sailing with Stravaigin is often rewarded with widespread sightings of birds of prey like Buzzards, Kestrels, Sparrowhawks and Peregrines. The sound of the seabird colonies is magnificently overwhelming, with the call of seabird colonies, Puffins, Guillemots & Razorbills, echoing off the cliffs.

Common, Bottlenose and Whitebeak Dolphins are frequent swimmers in the wake of the boats bow and if you’re lucky, you might even spot a Minke or Humpback Whale too.

All voyages for Stravaigin

Guest berths: 6 Rig: Bermudan Sloop

Owned and skippered by a Scottish family, Stravaigin offers guests sailing holidays on Scotland’s west coast in some of the best cruising grounds the Hebrides has to offer.

Stravaigin is an old Scots word meaning “t o wander with no particular intent ”.  Stravaigin’s owners say that this encapsulates their ethos of immersive adventures, exploring and discovering new landscapes, experiences, foods, cultures while creating meaningful experiences and memories that will last forever.

Below decks, Stravaigin has been well considered and laid out for guests optimum comfort. The bright and airy saloon with a large table and TV screen sits next to the generous L-shaped galley where guests can enjoy local cuisine and home-cooked meals. She has three private double berth cabins with one ensuite. Two of the double berth cabins can be separated with a lee-cloth for friends or comfortable solo travellers and both bathrooms have a shower.

Stravaigin has a modern Bermudan sloop rig with winches and full navigation systems. If you have never sailed before and are looking to learn the ropes, Stravaigin’s crew love to teach guests and get them involved with all aspects of sailing. Alternatively, she can be sailed single-handedly so if you’re after a relaxing sailing holiday soaking in the sights and delights of Scotland and the Hebrides , then that’s fine too!

Sailing holidays on Stravaigin vary from day sails in the inner Hebrides to week-long sailing adventures exploring the West coast of Scotland. Perfect for solo travellers, couples or families looking for private charters.

SG Deck Plan

Wherever you end up with Stravaigin, it will certainly be an adventure to remember and with her owner and skipper born and bred in Scotland, you’re in the best hands to discover all the secret spots. John knows the best trails and as you board Stravaigin, he will be able to give you a rough idea of the itinerary and what can be achieved over the week.

Getting involved

Stravaigin requires no previous sailing experience so you can sit back and enjoy the views although the crew are more than happy to show you the ropes and even give you the helm if you’d like! She’s a great boat to learn how to sail, with a modern winch system and simple gaff rig.

Sleeping, eating and relaxation

Stravaigin is fitted with private double cabins, a spacious saloon area and outdoor eating cockpit perfect for those summer evenings. Each day guests enjoy delicious locally sourced food as John whips up a feast in the galley of fresh seafood, organic meats and veggies from local islands, not to mention cakes and bread from the Solace Bakery. You’ll be well-fed and all your hot drinks and meals are included in the ticket price.

Stravaigin stern swimming

Into the water

Skipper John is also a trained snorkel instructor so if guests want to experience some truly refreshing wild swimming in Scotland, then do let him know as you board. There are also two paddle-boards available for guests to use and discover the nooks and crannies of this fascinating coastline. Wetsuits are not available on-board so please bring your own if you would like. There are waterproofs available to hire, please let us know at the time of booking.

Sustainable Travel

A sailing holiday is a sustainable way to travel that is in harmony with the environment. By using wind power, our vessels reduce reliance on fossil fuels, helping to minimize carbon emissions and pollution.

Sailing at a slower pace allows travellers to appreciate the journey and destinations without feeling rushed fully. This type of travel promotes a deeper connection with nature as the rhythmic movement of the boat and the sound of the wind create a sense of serenity.

Guests can explore secluded coves and untouched coastlines while preserving the pristine environments. With careful navigation and respect for marine life, a sailing holiday embodies responsible tourism, leaving only footprints and unforgettable memories behind.

Stravaigin has limited space for possessions so please be considerate and travel as light as possible. There is no storage for rigid cases – please bring your items in a soft bag.

We recommend a travelling light principal with lots of lightweight, easy drying layers. Below is a list of recommended items, these are not mandatory and those that have sailed before may have their own preferences!

  • Walking boots/shoes for onshore & light shoes/trainers ( with good grip)
  • Wash towel – micro fibre are lightweight and quick drying!
  • Swimsuit and swim towel

Welcome to New Horizon Sailing in Scotland

A skippered, hands-on, sailing holiday or RYA Training Course on the West Coast of Scotland. Sailing amongst the islands of the Inner and Outer Hebrides, Orkney and Shetland  in comfort aboard a quality Oyster yacht. Charter a berth or the whole boat.

Or you can take a RYA Practical Training Course at this accredited sailing school. You can combine a sailing holiday with RYA approved training from Start Yachting, to Competent Crew, Day Skipper, Coastal Skipper and Yachtmaster preparation.

  2024 Programme

In 2024 we will  sail in the Firth of Clyde, the Inner and Outer Hebrides, Orkney and Shetland. The programme gives the opportunity for both long sailing passages as well as relaxed exploration of the myriad beautiful anchorages in this superb cruising area. On most days, there is the opportunity for walks ashore, which can range from energetic scrambles to relaxed strolls on the beach.

The programme is fully booked but there has been a cancellation on cruise number 03 on April 21 and two places are available for this week on the beautiful Firth of Clyde from Troon.

The Scottish West Coast, the islands of the Hebrides, Orkney & Shetland are as spectacular as the wildlife that inhabits them. There is no better way to visit than from the sea.

Join us for exhilarating Scottish sailing as we explore aboard our pedigree Oyster yacht which combines comfort with proven sailing ability.

Discover deep sea lochs, dramatic mountains, puffins, dolphins, whales or eagles and, at the end of the day, good food and like-minded company in one of the many secluded anchorages.

The short video on the right, by friend and frequent guest Thomas, shows us sailing in the area of Skye, Canna, Rum, Muck and Eigg and to our evening anchorage near the ancient Castle Tioram in Loch Moidart.

Richard is your skipper and host, He is equally happy to handle the boat or leave you to sail while he keeps the mugs of tea and coffee topped up, prepares the meals or uncorks the wine.

He is a qualified RYA Yachtmaster Instructor with many years experience sailing the waters of the Scottish West Coast, the Northern Isles, the Faroe Islands, Arctic Norway as well as the Caribbean, Mediterranean and coasts of France and Spain. Those who want to learn more will find him a calm and patient coach.

Experienced sailors will enjoy improving their navigation and boat handling skills in an area with interesting tides and snug anchorages. Beginners will soon find themselves spending time at the wheel, trimming the sails or launching the dinghy.

We welcome all ages (from five to eighty-five so far), beginners as well as veteran sailors, people travelling on their own as well as couples and whole boat groups. Half of guests are female and repeat guests make up well over 90% of bookings.

Wind, Tide, Weather and the mood of the group dictate that no two cruises will be the same.

St Kilda

Favourite memories include; reefed-down sailing in magnificent winds, barrelling along with the tide in narrow channels, dry-mouthed moments creeping into tight anchorages or landing on rocky shores in the tender.

And; a stroll on an empty beach, local hospitality, laughing at the antics of puffins around their burrows, the excitement of sighting the first dolphins or the craic over an excellent dinner as we share favourite experiences.

Whatever your age or experience, whether looking for a relaxing sailing holiday in Scotland cruising between islands, an approved RYA sailing course , a concentrated week of mile building in the Outer Hebrides, a short break, or more adventurous sailing to St. Kilda , Orkney , Fair Isle, or Shetland you will find something to suit you.

In keeping with the New Horizon Sailing concept of choice – of top yacht, great location, guaranteed warm welcome and quality of experience, we offer:

Sailing Holidays, Short Breaks, Milebuilding and RYA Training in Scotland including the Firth of Clyde, the West Coast, Mull, Skye, the Outer Hebrides, St Kilda, Orkney, Fair Isle & Shetland.

We look forward to welcoming you aboard.

TESTIMONIALS

“Thank you for an incredible sailing adventure. It was perfect” Jan and Heris (Whole Boat Charter) (New York)

“I’m really satisfied again and would like to come back” Olaf (Experienced Sailor & whisky connoisseur)(Hanover)

Many thanks for a great week, and your exemplary, supportive skippering. I enjoyed it all, the company, getting back to sailing, the remote island experiences, and top sightseeing on Fair Isle and Shetland. Karen (Coming back to Sailing) (Edinburgh)

“The coasts and waters of Scotland are never more beautiful than when seen from Stormdancer” Marijke (frequent guest – Utrecht)

“Adventure in a safe pair of hands on a well-equipped, lovely boat.” Sarah (Exeter)

"Just to say a big thank you for a lovely week on the water and making things “Covid safe” for everyone. It was really good to be back cruising again and sailing new areas of the Scottish coastline. The week onboard felt quite normal. Thank you."

Participate in an enjoyable trip afloat exploring Scotland’s West Highland and Island Shores while learning a range of sailing skills by taking advantage of our Hebrides yacht charter cruise. Visit islands, secluded anchorages and view wild life in its natural environment while making passage in a luxurious ocean going sailing yacht. The Skippers are professional seafarers and fully qualified RYA Offshore Yachtmasters. Cruise Ecosse Ltd have been providing sailing holidays in Scotland since 1993 and really know how to get everyone involved while maintaining a relaxed social atmosphere. The Skippers also prepare the meals but needs help with the washing up.

From our secure and sheltered base in Tobermory it allows us a variety of destinations that can be explored in a week.

Hebrides Yacht Charter

South we should try and visit the islands of Coll, Lunga, Staffa (where the basalt columns and Fingals cave inspired Mendelssohn to compose the Hebrides Overture), Iona (where St Columba first landed in Scotland) and do some rock hopping into Tinker’s Hole or Rubh Ardlanish on the Ross of Mull. This may be followed by a sail across to Colonsay and on to remote anchorages on Jura. If weather and tide dictate we can anchor in a bay on the south side of the notorious Gulf of Corryvreckan. A tidal whirlpool called “The Great Race” one of only five similar places in the world.

During the first evening you meet the Skipper and get to know your sailing colleagues. Then it’s time for a safety briefing followed by a demonstration of the yacht’s equipment and, if possible, a short practice sail in sheltered waters of Loch Sunart where the Skipper will show you how to steer the yacht and handle the sails. A home cooked evening meal can be taken before, after (or instead of!) the evening sail.

All too soon it will be Friday morning and passage will be made back to Tobermory where you disembark.

The price includes tuition to Coastal skipper level and the use of all safety equipment, meals and snacks. If you have a favourite nibble or tipple you are welcome to bring it along. You will have to bring waterproofs (some help can be given with those), warm clothes, a hat, sleeping bag, soft soled non-slip shoes and wellington boots.

Cars may be parked free of charge at Tobermory, Ledaig Car Park next to the Marina. Ferries run frequently between Oban and Mull (50mins). If travelling as a foot passenger then we can pick up by minibus at the Craignure ferry terminal at a pre-arranged time. Scotrail run 3 trains a day between Glasgow Queen Street station and Oban. Citylink run 3 express coaches a day between Glasgow and Oban and once a day between Edinburgh and Oban.

If you fancy a bit of luxury before or after your Hebrides Yacht Charter then I would recommend Linndhu House on the outskirts of Tobermory where a discount is available for Cruise Ecosse customers. Visit their web site here: www.linndhuhouse.com
